Just a quick heads up! i have been told that a C17 transporter will be flying in to Leeds tomorrow morning at around 11am, it came from a lad who works at the airport! lets hope he is correct! fingers crossed that the weather is okay too, wouldn't mind seeing this come in and take some pictures/video.. :good:

HI, I've only just joined this forum as I was looking to find out what the massive military jet I have just seen leave LBA from my window is! I'm at Guiseley. Pity the cloud was so low but got a good enough look.

I drove right underneath it as it took off. Just goes to show - stopping off at McDonalds for afternoon tea (or in my case, chicken nuggets) reaps rewards.

If anyone did see it take off he Did not back track runway 32 he took it from the interchange

Was that a medevac flight? BHX used to have several of them per year although now they are rarer since the UK removed troops from Afghanistan.

Great video of the C17, it obviously landed and took off from our short runway without any problems and that made me wonder how it compares in weight, landing & take off capabilities etc to some of the commercial passenger models that appear to be not suited all that well to LBA?

The C17 is specifically designed for "short field" operations and most airliners are not. I will try and get MTOW statistics for you!
The C17 has a MTOW of 585,000 lbs.
All the 787 models are lighter (the heaviest, the 787-10, weighs 557,000 lbs).
All the 777 models are heavier except the standard -200 series.
All the A330 models have a MTOW of less than 540,000 lbs.

As it was a training flight, it would have been very light, with little fuel load and no cargo, hence it being able to take off from the interchange and still be airborne before the road tunnel. That said, like most military transports, it is designed for short take off and landing as stated by jfy1999

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
