The airport has 4 priority routes it wants to resume/retain.
Paris, Palma, Cork and Doha. They're talking with Air France about launching Paris CDG and continue to talk with Qatar Airways. Only my assumption but i'd expect that they're talking to Ryanair about the other 2 routes.

Why Cork?
It's one of the ex Flybe routes and connections to Ireland are important for Wales and it means Ireland would be covered, North, Midlands and South. Shannon would be nice as well but i don't think we'd see that!

Still amazes me CWL has no low cost connection to PMI - long overdue and am almost certain the demand is there! Definitely one for Ryanair to consider

I can’t see ORK making an appearance given how many other larger cities would also like a link there. And the fact BRS has only just recouped the route since the pandemic. Much better routes than ORK for the airport to focus on…

It is interesting as you'd have a route like Barcelona would be more of a priority but they must have a reason why they're focusing on Cork.

Perhaps it’s one route the airport management are convinced they’ll win - hence why it was mentioned.
I still think Aer lingus could support a daily Dublin route (or even just week days) alongside Ryanair. The smaller aircraft they tend to use would have a better load factor too.

Looks like the airport is doing some advertising on Cardiff Bus for KLM and Amsterdam connecting Wales to the world, an Aer Lingus Northern Ireland themed bus, and it looks like 2 for Loganair. 1 for Edinburgh and one with what looks like the Highlands. There's more photos on Facebook.

Also it looks like the Business Development Manager and CEO will be attending the 20th Connect Aviation forum in Turin

That's nice to see, because the airport advertising policy has been taking quite a bashing on dried plum. Let's hope the visit to Turin will bring some good results.

I suspect the problem may well be the budget is limited.

Given Jet2s announcement of a 2 aircraft base at Bournemouth surely Cardiff could be in with a shout for summer 26? A two aircraft base with the kind of destinations and frequencies that are planned at Bournemouth would be perfect for Cardiff. It wouldn’t affect its bigger bases at Bristol and Birmingham and would give the airport that shot in the arm it needs

It would be great and south Wales would fit perfectly into Jet2’s target market. It will be interesting to see what effect it has on Tui at Bournemouth.

Definitely one to watch as TUI have yet to complete their S25 offering from BOH and there is a lot of duplication of routes as it stands. Not sure FR will be too happy either, but less bothered due to the different markets and services they offer generally - but lets not forget the TUI/FR budding partnership...

Always be careful what you wish for.

Sadly I'd be surprised if they did. I expect Jet2 to be like Easyjet and any expansion to happen at Bristol as they know that people from Wales will travel to them there.

I am afraid that you are right.
I know there are limited services from CWL, but Welsh people need to support the flights and not "toddle off" to BRS.

Unfortunately if the airlines refuse to provide the product people have no other option to look to England

I think this article pretty much rules out any base at Cardiff
“We have no plans for any more bases,” he confirmed. Asked if he would nevertheless consider operating from Gatwick, he replied: “No.”

Also looking further ahead I think a drive for inbound tourism will be vital as well. At the moment we tend to assume the airport needs to ships brits off to the sun. There’s no reason foreign visitors can’t make Cardiff and the beacons their holiday destination.

I think that's one of the big challenges for Cardiff as the tourism focus generally seems to focus on the north west and if routes like Paris and Edinburgh are to work Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan need to be seen and promoted as a tourist destination for foreigners.

I also wonder if not being in ERASMUS is having an effect in that it's made Welsh universities less attractive to European students so lessening the amount of potential passengers using routes like Amsterdam and Paris.

Commenting as an "insider" in Wales, from what I can see the inbound tourism promotion of Wales across the world is abysmal. I remember seeing some campaign happening in the Middle East when QR started, but whether that has continued since they pulled the route is open for review.
The issue with BRS is that they will soon fill up and it's still not guaranteed that they will manage the growth they want to with the space and local restrictions they're up against. Jet2 aren't the only ones that want to expand at BRS.
I absolutely agree that CWL needs more than just airlines taking the Welsh out of Wales, and I genuinely believe Ryanair are CWL's last chance of anything significant. At least with FR there's opportunity of bringing inbound passenger tourism even from the sun routes.

I know it's not likely but I wonder if the Welsh government would be better off looking at some of deal with Ryanair similar to one they had with Qatar Airways to market Wales as a destination and maybe target certain inbound markets.

Agree. Throw some money at some really good marketing and see what falls. Should ask KLM too.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
