CAA Provisional Statistics Update

November 2016

CAA stats for the month show a much improved percentage gain than has been the case throughout the summer.

52,365 passengers up 12.8% on November 2015. Atms were up 10.3%. Rolling 12-month total was 841,015, up 2.2% on a year ago.

December 2016

52,414 passengers up 13.2% on December 2015. Atms were up 15.8%. Rolling 12-month total was 847,132, up 3.2% on a year ago.

So a strong end to a middling sort of year.

Certainly better this winter although the summer was just ok, especially in comparison with the performance of other UK regional airports in summer 2016.

The main reason for the double digit increases so far this winter is the fact that Flybe is operating flights to Malaga and Alicante which they didn't do in the previous winter. This accounts for around 3,000 passengers per month which is a significant figure percentage-wise, having regard to the total number of passengers at EXT each month in winter.

January 2017

CAA stats now published showing 45,531 passengers handled in the month, up 7.3% on January 2016. Atms were up 9.4%. Rolling 12-month total was 850,228, up 3.8% on a year ago. The gains continue through the winter.

February 2017

CAA stats now published showing 50,594 passengers handled in the month, up 10.7% on February 2016.

The CAA has shown no 12-month rolling totals for February 2017 but, based on January's figures, the 12-month figure at the end of February 2017 was 855,130, up 4.44% on a year ago.

April 2017

CAA stats published this evening showing 75,665 passengers handled in the month, up 22.5% on April 2016. Atms were up 6.8%, Rolling 12-month total was 876.095, up 6.9% on a year ago.

As with most airports whose stats were published this evening the Easter factor played a part but the figures are still excellent for all that.

May 2017

CAA stats for May now published and EXT continues its steady climb.

86,731 passengers passed through the terminal in the month, an increase of 7.3% on May 2016. Atms were up 3.8%.
Rolling 12-month total was 882,007, up 7.6% on a year ago.

June 2017

CAA stats for June now published by the CAA. Still positive although a lower percentage rise this month.

92,180 passengers passed through the terminal in the month, an increase of 1.2% on June 2016. Atms showed a tiny fall of 0.5%. Rolling 12-month total was 883,125, up 7.8% on a year ago.

EXT has been doing well for quite a while now and is slowly heading back up to the 1 mppa mark which it managed to reach and sustain for a while in 2007/2008. The recession then hit it hard and took annual numbers back to the 700,000 level over the ensuing four or five years.

July 2017

EXT is one of the few airports whose July stats have been released today by the CAA.

97,438 passengers, up 0.3% on July 2016. Atms up 1.1%. Rolling 12-month total 883,393, up 7.3% on a year ago.

August 2017

CAA stats show 101,487 passengers in the month, up just 0.2% on August 2016. Atms were down slightly by 0.9%.
Rolling 12-month total was 883,590, up 6.6% on a year ago.

EXT has been flat this summer - it was handling 882,000 in the 12 months to the end of May.

CAA stats show 101,487 passengers in the month, up just 0.2% on August 2016. Atms were down slightly by 0.9%.
Rolling 12-month total was 883,590, up 6.6% on a year ago.

EXT has been flat this summer - it was handling 882,000 in the 12 months to the end of May.

But at least EXT is still showing an upward trend - albeit only slightly compared to August 2016.
Don't forget also that Air Malta have pulled out from various UK airports this year, including EXT, which will have had an effect on figures for EXT.

A quick look at the CAA August figures published this evening shows that several other UK airports have also had a flat summer.

2015 and 2016 were very good for EXT as they recovered some of the lost ground that the recession brought about. Those years saw consistent growth every month. This year saw strong growth through the winter but the summer eased off, albeit there was some growth.

I'd expect to see EXT continuing its climb to get back above the 1 mppa that it once attracted. The Exeter city region probably enjoys the most vibrant economy in Devon and Cornwall, albeit Plymouth is a larger city. Exeter has better road and rail connectivity and it has an airport.

I'm sure that Rome would find a good market at EXT in terms of filling seats but, as we've discussing in other threads today, very high load factors don't always mean a successful route for the carrier.

I've had a look back at EXT's annual passenger figures since the beginning of this century (courtesy CAA). See below:

It's noticeable that there was a big jump in 2004 which led on to a trebling of passenger numbers in five years by 2007. This was due mainly to Flybe putting in more aircraft and routes.

The five years after 2007 saw falling passenger numbers each year as the recession made its mark. EXT saw its annual passenger throughput fall by over 30% in those five years but it was not alone; some airports fared even worse.

The recovery began in 2013 and each year since then has seen increases in passenger numbers.

Although this summer has seen the rate of increase slow down the winter months in 16/17 helped the airport surge forward.

So if the progress made since 2013 continues that 1 mppa level won't be too far away.
