Some unhappy bunnies at both LBA and LPL I would think

To be fair, everyone knows (or should know by now) the way Ryanair operate, playing one airport off against their neighbouring airports.

As far as I am concerned Ryanair has fallen foul of it's own tricks because they've proved to everyone that they need to be at Manchester. If anything, Manchester will have more 'buying' power with the airline from now on.

I made a mis-calculation in my last post, with the ALC increases, its actually 6 routes and 79 weekly frequencies.

MAN is deffinatly the driving force in the latest RYR expansion. Put it this way:

-RYR have good as said they mis-played expanding other airports to get MAN to bow to pressure, and it hasnt worked.
-The fact that MAN have moved RYR to T2, got them to use the quieter slots, and longer taxi times
-The present deal, at the moment, is £6 per pax, and when they left last time, RYR were moaning at £3 per head. The deal gets better with more capacity however.

RYR need MAN more than MAN need RYR, and RYR are only going to get bigger at MAN, and if what is being touted is true, then LPL/LBA are going to be very un-nerved at the MAN expansion (Im not for one second suggesting LBA/LPL will be pulled, but, one or 2 routes may be moved back to MAN, such as Bremen as it performed best at MAN).

Wonder if LBIA are worried that just a few weeks after announcing they are back, RYR are up to 93 weekly departures as opposed to LBA having 163 weekly deps, and that's with LBA being a base and MAN not being a base (yet). They are certainly catching up fast. I am saying this as, after RYR pulled the 9 routes from MAN, they said LBA would get the majority of the displaced capacity.

I see it looks like ryanair are going to announce a new base at Manchester Airport on Monday morning.

It has been mentioned that they will base 4 Boeing 737-800 aircraft and Lunch 28 routes.

I wonder who there are after, Jet2.com, Easyjet.com or the charter Airlines?

Ryanair to base at Manchester?

Not confirmed until we hear it from the horses mouth but it is looking like Manchester will become Ryanair's newest base.

I don't know what is being circulated on other forums but I have been told this evening that Manchester will become their new base, starting with 2 aircraft, then 4 then 6 but they were not sure of the time scale.

No surprise if it is MAN. Back in January when Ryanair announced it was to operate routes from MAN this year MOL said his next step would be to open a base there - vide a MEN press report from January I found a couple of days ago.

I wonder if MOL had an eleventh hour falling out with them over their fees? Or, was their ever going to be an announcement at all as it was the day they announced their past years passenger figures and load factors. People just put 2 + 2 to gether. Press statement + Manchester = new base..... wrong = Previous years figures statement!

I guess we'll learn more today.

It was a Ryanair employee who told me about the rumour, he quoted the number of aircraft so it seemed a credible rumour. I don't think it will be long before Ryanair are "back in bed" with Manchester airport. They need Manchester as much as the airport needs them. The move would in tern give Ryanair additional buying power when negotiating with airports at Liverpool and Leeds.

Ryan Air just announced a one aircraft, 12 route summer base for Bournemouth in 2012! This is a MAG company so that could have been the news for yesterday.
However, I do agree with you Aviador and feel a MAN base isn't too far away now for the bargaining reasons you stated.

Have heard that the deal that MOL had for ryanair basing 4x aircraft at Manchester has fallen through, So it sounds like it wont be happening anytime soon .

Who knows what may happen though! As with MOL, he is well known for changing his mind at the last moment and doing things unexpected.

Yes it's official Ryanair have announced their new base at Manchester airport with aircraft arriving for the winter season with further expansion next summer.

Ryanair is set to announce a massive expansion at Manchester Airport, which will see hundreds of jobs created.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary is in Manchester today to reveal the plans at a press conference.


The M.E.N. understands that the deal includes basing Ryanair aircraft at the airport and the introduction of new European routes, including to destinations in Spain and Italy.

Sources said one or two aircraft are likely to be permanently based at Manchester from the winter, with more planes arriving by next summer.

The number of destinations served is expected to soar from the current six to the mid-teens this winter, growing to more than 20 by summer 2012.

Many of the routes the airline axed when it pulled out of Manchester 18 months ago are set to be resurrected, which could include flights to Barcelona, Bremen, Brussels, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

Activity of a similar scale at other Ryanair bases delivers up to 2m passengers per year, which in turn brings hundreds of new jobs and increased tourism.

The latest announcement comes after we revealed the carrier had struck a multi-million pound deal with the airport to introduce thousands of budget flights.

The agreement, understood to be worth at least £3m a year, has already brought 600 jobs and 600,000 passengers to the region.

It marked an extraordinary U-turn for Ryanair, as it came less than 18 months after the airline pulled out, sparking a war of words with airport bosses.

Andrew Cornish, who was the airport’s managing director at the time, famously hit out at Ryanair, saying Manchester had refused to ‘prostitute’ itself to keep the carrier.

It is understood that the Dublin-based airline had been demanding to land for free – it had previously paid £3 per passenger – but in return it would bring in 28 new routes the following summer.

Last night, bosses said they were unable to comment on the latest expansion plans but confirmed Mr O'Leary would be making a 'significant' announcement at the airport today.

Speaking exclusively to the M.E.N. in January, Mr O'Leary hinted his company was in talks with the airport about basing aircraft at the site.

He added: "We are growing like gang-busters. The challenge for us is that we still don’t have a base here. There’s the possibility of opening up a base but it’s important for us not to run before we can walk.

"We’ve been here before and fallen out but hopefully at the end of the summer we will be announcing more growth at Manchester."

Some of these will no doubt be Ryanair versions of the destination.

Ryanair announce Manchester Airport base / expansion

Ryanair has announced it will launch a base and add a number of new routes from Manchester Airport, nearly two years after it axed nine routes blaming airport charges. It will fly to 13 destinations by October, rising to 26 next summer. The airport said it had made some sacrifices to win back the airline.

The airline will initially base two aircraft at the airport from October operating 17 routes. Next summer Ryanair plans to grow to four aircraft and will fly from Manchester to: Alicante; Barcelona (Girona); Bezier; Biarritz; Bremen; Brussels, Dublin; Faro; Frankfurt; Ibiza; Katowice; Madrid; Malaga; Memmingen; Milan; Murcia; Oslo; Palma; Paris; Reus; Rome; Rzeszow; Tallinn; Tours; Tenerife and Valencia.

Ryanair fell out with the airport in August 2009 when a deal to run an additional 28 weekly flights if the airport charges were reduced could not be reached. At the time the airport said its charges were reasonable.

Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, said a compromise had been agreed. He said: ‘The market has changed and the tour operators have declined, which formed a large part of the airport's business. I think they have been keen to get us back and we have learned from our mistakes last time.’ He said the new base will deliver up to two million passengers a year.

Penny Coates, chief operating officer of Manchester Airport, said: ‘We have seen a decline in passenger numbers over the last two or three years particularly since the recession kicked in.’ She said the airport had lost Ryanair passengers to Liverpool and to Leeds, adding: ‘We want those passengers back to fly here from Manchester.’
