I thought I'd share a few of my thoughts on planned developments for 2017, and what I expect to hear for 2018. As ever for me, my focus is on Long Haul.

The first point to make is that the economic outlook is significantly more uncertain for 2017-2020 that it was this time last year. Elections generate uncertainty (as opposed to catastrophe) and I do not expect Brexit or trump to have a GFC type effect as seen in 2008-10. It may hold back some of the more exotic launches.

The second point to make is that the south east runway capacity issue is not going away for at least the next 15 years, most likely 25+ years. MAN is well placed to take advantage of this and the fundamentals of MANs business are strong.

With this in mind, I turn my attention to some of the selected routes from MAN.

New York - there is a lot of competition on this route, with multiple operators operating a daily flight. I think the ones to keen an eye on are VS, TCX, AA and UA, here's why (I admit this is most of them!).
  • VS are picking up from DL on the A333 is a major development, if it continues year round it could snatch a significant amount of business from UA and AA on the B752 in the winter.
  • UA might need to think about increasing capacity at EWR to compensate for the loss of IAD and shore up their core route. If they do nothing, it is only a matter of time before EWR is suspended.
  • AA are in a similar position to UA, but we think we know that BA are starting to take more of an interest in MAN and it is here that we might need to take note.
  • TCX have been threatening to go more than daily, and this may be something that will be announced in 2017

San Francisco - to go from having no one on the route to having two competing airlines is a major development. Whether either of VS or TCX can take the route year round will be an interesting one to keep an eye on.

Los Angeles - TCX have increased this slightly in 2017. Might we see a so called "full service" carrier on the route? VS have been strongly tipped for this, and if SFO goes well, I think we might hear something in the early part of 2017. BA have also been tipped on here, but this seems to be quite some distance away.

Chicago - this is one to keep an eye on as part of the rumoured AA/BA switchover. The passenger volumes to ORD have collapsed and presumably now go via DUB. If AA cannot get this to work year round it might be vulnerable to UA. I would hope to see a solid performance from AA in 2017, but the route has got a reputation that I fear it might be difficult to recover from this.

Toronto - we have seen increases from AC Rouge and Transat for 2017. I wonder whether a longer season might be forthcoming in 2018. AC are expanding their fleet, so I expect to see mainline in the next couple of years. Against the backdrop of all this, what are Westjet thinking?

Vancouver - Transat have increased this in 2017, rouge's plans remain uncertain. Watch this space.

Singapore - we expect to see the A350 in 2017. When, we don't know. Since going non-stop we think the route has performed well, but the Houston sector remains a challenge if it is to go daily. I think we will see some form of adjustment as SQ like to see a daily service to their European destinations.

Hong Kong - we think CX are going daily on the A350 from June. Lets see how that beds in, and whether CX might make further increases and adjustments moving forwards.

Beijing - we think Hainan are going daily to MAN with a 4x weekly DUB tag. Might they consider the B789?

Shanghai (proposed new route) - now one of MAN's most long standing rumours. I think we will see this start in 2017, with an announcement in the early new year.

Bangkok (proposed new route) - we think one of the world's largest unserved markets will be served directly in 2017 by TG. I would like to see a daily service, but perhaps 4/5 weekly is a reasonable expectation.

Delhi (proposed new route) - supposed AI charters in 2017. I think 2017 is the year we will hear about a more permanent presence.

Mumbai (proposed new route) - a strongly rumoured SIN-BOM-MAN flight on Scoot. Other one to look for is Vistara (another SQ affiliate).

Tokyo (proposed new route) - MAN has recently gone public about this, and I expect it to be one of their key targets for 2018. I think we might hear something more solid on this in 2017 (e.g. who is more serious, JAL or ANA) but don't expect to see any hardware until 2018 at the earliest.

Dubai - goes to three daily A380 next month. The next stop is clearly 4x daily (that is incredible) but do they go 3xA380 and 1x B77W or 2 of each? Its a tough life. Might EK be in the market for 5th freedoms from MAN?

Abu Dhabi - Etihad have a strong presence at MAN, but have been at 2x daily for some time. Do they look to increase frequency in 2017? I'm not so sure, but we could see a consistent B77W product before a frequency increase in 2018.

Doha - I do not expect a change from Qatar for some time!

Muscat - looking forward to seeing how they bed in.

Kuwait (proposed new route) - bit of a left field one, but they seem to be saying in the local press that they want to fly to Manchester. Lets see what happens.

Cape Town/Johannesburg (proposed new routes) - we think CPT is with TCX. JNB presumably will be a Norwegian route. I expect CPT to launch in 2017 with news on JNB shortly thereafter.

Addis Abba (proposed new route) - another one to appear in the MEN in 2016. ET rarely do European flying without a tag, so might this continue to Scandinavia? Additionally, with USPC at MAN, might ET see a better return in flying to the US from MAN over DUB?

Throwing around one or two others, changes to the Chinese market happen very quickly so almost anything could happen. I wonder whether Jordanian might have an interest, and if AA/BA do a job swap, might Dallas come back on the radar? Detroit also might be on DL's radar for 2018, and San Diego on TCX for the same period.

In summary, a huge amount to keep an eye on, much of which seemed scarcely believable a couple of years ago.

Manchester-Lisbon
23 weekly flights
from July in 2017 with 14 weekly TAP flights, 5 weekly Ryanair flights and 4 weekly Monarch flights.

Manchester-New York
28 weekly flights
in summer 2017, with 7 weekly UA, VS, AA, TCX. If UA were to add a second daily EWR and Norwegian add 4 weekly to SWF as expected, this could make 39 weekly New York flights - however 32 just with the addition of Norwegian looks more likely.

Disappointing, however, to see that all of the New York departures are over by 11am! Hopefully this will change with Norwegian?
VS 1040-1330 333
TCX 1035-1235 332
UA 0925-1220 752
AA 1015-1255 763

UA need to up their game - they are the only airline (currently) having a 757 going TATL from MAN in the summer.

Current schedule (July):
31 departures to New York (3 PIA which do not return)
6 departures to Boston
6 departures to San Francisco
5 departures to Houston (possible increase to 7)
7 departures to Atlanta
7 departures to Philadelphia
7 departures to Chicago
2 departures to Miami
3 departures to Los Angeles
21 departures to Orlando International
3 departures to Orlando Sanford
7 departures to Las Vegas

Confirmed weekly departures to the US from MAN in S17: 105 weekly MAN-US departures
Weekly departures to the US from MAN in S16: 87 (IIRC)

Possible:
-Increase of 2fpw on 359 to Houston
-4fpw with Norwegian MAN-SWF
-3fpw with Norwegian MAN-PVD

If these increases happen, it will mean: 114 weekly MAN-US departures

If United decide to add a second daily EWR flight, it could mean: 121 weekly MAN-US departures

Pretty impressive numbers.

I don't believe UA will add a second EWR flight. I think they are much more likely to use B767 equipment (if they make any change at all).

All in all, 31 confirmed new routes, 4 to be announced properly (semi announced but not on sale) and that's without any new based carrier (yet). Given a lot of predictions are coming through plus some bits I know in the background, we should have about 40-ish or more new routes announced by February.

Thanks User. A splendid list. There is a notable omission from "To be Announced". Are you just being cautious because there has been nothing semi-official to say Shanghai will be announced, or have the indications changed?

There are some things to be announced that I'm not allowed to talk about at this time. It will be revealed in time.

The rumour/TBA list is as long as my arm, so, have patience and all will be revealed.

Well, seems this thread is needed as seen as Thomas Cook are quick off the blocks with a new long haul route!

I'm wondering if MAN-SNU can take the crown for the first official new route for 2018 from the UK? I know Qantas have 'announced' PER-LHR, but, unlike the TCX route, it doesn't have flight numbers or times just yet.

Must be some sort of record!

Anyway, probably be a while until more news comes forward, but, at least it's here ready to go.

Despite the lack of solid news, there are plenty of routes in the pipeline. Here are a few general and specific things to keep an eye on for 2018:
  • Will VS continue their expansion at MAN? (S17 plans announced in March 16 so news may break soon).
  • How will TCX continue their impressive development at MAN?
  • Will AI launch a scheduled flight to MAN?
  • Will we see a direct flight to BKK (possibly W17?)
  • Will DL launch DTW after the on-off saga of S17?
  • How will the MEB 3 continue to develop at MAN, particularly now that we are starting to see more direct flights beyond the ME to the Far East and more direct options to the ME?
  • Will the chinese promise deliver?

Apparently the Star Alliance 359 carrier (largely suspected to be TG) for W17 was due to be announced early 2017 and a tourism campaign from December? Not sure if this time line still exists?

I thought I would emulate a thread from the BHX area. You can post what is on your wish list for 2017 and, similarly to BHX, announcements that take place during 2017 for a 2018 start. Try and make these realistic as I have seen some threads like this which don't seem realistic for the time frame mentioned and, also, even though it is your wishlist, if you travel to let's say Sapporo every year, please don't include that for the sake of it! 😉 I have put mine in likelihood of 1-5 (most likely-least unlikely to happen in the time frame)

My wish list:
  • Air China to Shanghai (2/3 perhaps someone can give an updated position on this)
  • Singapore to go daily (2)
  • Hainan Airlines to go daily, possibly with DUB tag (1)
  • Cathay to go daily (2)
  • Kuwait Airlines to begin from September (2/3)
  • San Francisco to go year-round (2/3)
  • Los Angeles, Miami on VS (2)
  • United to increase Newark to 767 (3)
  • Chicago to go year-round (3)
  • Toronto to go mainline (4)
  • Vancouver to launch on AC or AC Rouge (2)
  • Thai to Bangkok (2/3)
  • Anyone to Delhi/Mumbai (4)
  • Cape Town to launch on TCX (1)
  • Paris Orly to be served, possibly Transavia or Vueling (2)
  • Biarritz/Bordeaux/Perpignan/Seville/Bucharest/Warsaw (Chopin)/Moscow (2 to 4 as it moves along the line)

Any more suggestions or updated positions on any of the above?

My 2017 wish list (I'm not going to include known rumours for the sake of making the list different from a rumours list)

The Vueling base to be announced. Routes I would like to see are Palmero, Seville, Santiago, Asturias, Vigo, Santander, Nantes, Orly, Catania, Nice and Bordeaux.

EL AL to Tel Aviv.

Norwegian to Oakland, Tromso, Trondheim and Gothenburg.

Atlantic Airways to Vagar

Thomas Cook to Rio, Costa Rica, Windhoek and Phnom Phen.

Air Algirie to Algiers.

Royal Air Maroc to Casablanca.

Air Arabia Maric to Tangiers.

Ryanair to Tallinn, Vitoria, Bucharest and other Eastern Europe.

There are more but this is it for now.

El Al is a good shout, that I would like. Do you really think those are achievable this year? That would be great if even some of them were.

The big aspiration for me is to see the continued development and success we have seen from TCX and VS. Both have had a significant boost from the national connectivity provided by BE, and I would hate to see either NAX derail those plans, or BE's focus shift to LHR.

Both offer great services MAN.

I would like to see an increased focus on short haul bases that can offer connections to long haul services in addition to BE. Whether that is by Vueling, Ryanair, EasyJet - I'm not too fussed. But for MAN to grow it needs a little more "hub".

In terms of the long haul stuff from overseas carriers:
  • CX and SQ going daily would be great.
  • Continued growth from the Chinese carriers, HU and CA.
  • Rebound from the US carriers, UA and AA, with newer equipment (a B772 might be unrealistic).
  • AC mainline from either YVR or YYZ (or both!)
  • TG to BKK
  • ANA or JAL to TYO.
  • ET to ADD.

Would Salzburg work as a schedule?

I would have thought the regular Sound Of Music tours would be a real money spinner.

Some niche Air Europa routes would be a good fit as well.

Is there likely to be any commencement of work North Side on Airport City.
