I think package one is about half way through 2019 due to the complexities of keeping the airport fully operation.

The first things you should see are the car park right next to T2 just to the north will be emptied and groundwork/piling beginning.

Then very shortly after, the staff west car park will be gone.

Not sure if this news fits into this section, but it is infrastructure.

Transpennine Express will be launching a new direct rail service between Newcastle and Manchester Airport that calls only at York, Leeds and Picadilly, 4 times every weekday and 5 times a day at weekends. They already operate services between the two stations but will increase them by 180%. This means the timetable will look like this with 74 train services a week:
Six direct trains will run each weekday:

· Leave Newcastle at 10:51, arrive at Manchester Airport at 13:39

· Leave Newcastle at 12:51, arrive at Manchester Airport at 15:39

· Leave Manchester Airport at 08:06, arrive at Newcastle at 10:42

· Leave Manchester Airport at 10:06, arrive at Newcastle at 12:42

· Leave Manchester Airport at 12:06, arrive at Newcastle at 14:43

· Leave Manchester Airport at 17:03, arrive at Newcastle at 19:57*

*Starts from Manchester Piccadilly on Fridays

Ten direct trains will run every Saturday:

· Leave Newcastle at 07:48, arrive at Manchester Airport at 10:39

· Leave Newcastle at 10:48, arrive at Manchester Airport at 13:39

· Leave Newcastle at 12:48, arrive at Manchester Airport at 15:39

· Leave Newcastle at 14:52, arrive at Manchester Airport at 17:39

· Leave Newcastle at 16:51, arrive at Manchester Airport at 19:40

· Leave Manchester Airport at 08:06, arrive at Newcastle at 10:44

· Leave Manchester Airport at 10:06, arrive at Newcastle at 12:42

· Leave Manchester Airport at 12:06, arrive at Newcastle at 14:43

· Leave Manchester Airport at 14:06, arrive at Newcastle at 16:42

· Leave Manchester Airport at 17:06, arrive at Newcastle at 19:58

Eight direct trains will run every Sunday:

· Leave Newcastle at 11:20, arrive at Manchester Airport at 14:05

· Leave Newcastle at 13:10, arrive at Manchester Airport at 16:05

· Leave Newcastle at 15:17, arrive at Manchester Airport at 18:05

· Leave Newcastle at 17:19, arrive at Manchester Airport at 20:06

· Leave Manchester Airport at 10:33, arrive at Newcastle at 13:17

· Leave Manchester Airport at 12:33, arrive at Newcastle at 15:15

· Leave Manchester Airport at 14:33 arrive at Newcastle at 17:17

Transpennine Express plan to run this service hourly throughout the day once the Ordsall Chord has been bedded in - about a year away. But they identified resources which have allowed them to launch this limited introductory service in the meantime. Thus, whilst it is easy to criticise the glaring holes in this schedule, it was either this or nothing until the Chord has come into service. Personally, I think its great that they're offering this route to the best extent possible in the interim. It is a route I have reason to use regularly. Not needing to change at York or Carlisle will be great. Note that in the next couple of years brand new rolling stock will be introduced on this service as well. Carriage interior fit will have a real "inter-city" feel about it as opposed to the glorified commuter-train layout offered at present.

I and at least the 8am 10 am and 12 departures allow arriving pax to depart in a not unreasonable time.

Straight off an early arrival into Manch and in Newcastle inside 2 hours 40 min.

Off topic I know but it was recently reported somewhere that the build cost for the TP had been reduced by about £125M. This seems to equate more or less with the amount of money that MAG have just announced they are going to invest in a new arrivals terminal at STN and convert the existing terminal to departures only.

Planning still to be obtained and subject thereto work to be finished by 2020

Hello All,

1st time poster, long time reader!
In response to the query about the amount of e-gates scheduled for the new T2, I can confirm that there will be 25. These will be placed in 2 banks of 15 and 10 with the regular immigration desks either side. A number of layout options for the immigration arrivals area have been looked at with various configurations taking into account passenger flows, crossover of pax from left and right etc.

The information I have is that the building work on the TP will start Q2 2017 and the new terminal will open Q4 2019 but I'm sure that information has already been posted on here. As a completely useless piece of trivia though the new arrivals hall will be the same width as the A380's wingspan!!

The extra capacity will probably be needed by then!

Any news on the future phasing (i.e. T1/T3 site) and the number of piers they want to build out of T2? Looking forward to seeing some new (proper) outside renders...

If they extend the terminal what will that move the capacity figure to by 2019 ?

I thought it was 35m currently so I assume that this will clearly ramp it up.

If ...and it's a big if? present growth continues at say 2.5m per year we could be at 30m by start of 2019 but presumably that is coincides with the choke point as we lose ramp space re pier construction?

Can we not use the piers space for parking aircraft and simply bus passengers?

I think the plan is to construct the extra stands and taxiways for the fourth pier (closest to the motorway) first.

This frees up capacity to start constructing the middle piers (I assume one at a time) one of which has USPC followed by the fist pier (closest to T1). I assume the first pier will then be built out.

First piling for T2 extension should start on 25th January and shrub removal around Staff West can be expected around that date.

Great to hear the project will start to move forwards. Points towards the expected phasing of the first pier/apron/stands being over staff west.

Hopefully some more renders will be made public soon.
