Manchester: Infrastructure, Developments and Construction

Use this prefix for new threads for Manchester Airport
I think as it stands, the airport management aren't willing to fund much if any of the HS2 station as they feel it won't really benefit them.

However, I think once you propose a combined HS2/HS3 station on that site they'll suddenly become very interested and will be happy to part fund it.

What actually is included in the cost of the station? The station involves the structure, the 2 extra tracks, signalling, surface access and no doubt a host of other things, but are all the ancillaries included as part of the cost that has to be funded?

Or to put it another way, is it the difference between the cost of the project with the station and the cost without it?

Well yes absolutely " BIG IF " but if it then becomes a specific Manchester Airport station linked also to East West as well as South - Manchester that is very much a different story BUT do we have any rail experts who know how this would be achieved ?

If it's simply a chane at Picadilly that surely is no different to what is proposed now.

I'm struggling to see how the connectivity re hs3 can become seamless ?

And it is ONLY on that basis that MAG would then feel it's viable . ....as infact the article does state !

The elements of the station that may seem attractive to MAN is the possibility of constructing and operating a huge new car park facility next to the HS2/3 station.

With the station and car parks linked to the expanded T2 by some form of people mover, and the airport entitled to charge for parking irrespective of whether the car is parked for rail or airport use, it suddenly becomes more
Attractive.

In summary, all parties know it is an opportunity the airport and Manchester cannot pass up. It is simply a case of agreeing the commercials. But it is so far into the future that there is no urgency on those negotiations so I expect it will be some time before there is movement in this.

Quick techincal question (I think).

With the fog/weather limiting MAN to single runway operations only, is there anythin sensible that can be done do resolve this or are the runways too close together?

Strikes me that as the airport grows close to the limit of single runway operations, the greater justification there is to do more in order to make MAN resilient to these problems.

Yes, you could in theory operate dual runway if I remember correctly. the problem however is that you still need to cross the other runway and I suspect that, allowing for ILS safeguarding, there would be little if anything gained.

I stand to be corrected by our other technical contributors.

just found this nugget in the Manchester evening news which refers to T2 metrolink "link" extention.

Don't get excited !

We are going to have a feasibility study and if there is any money left after spending on Elizabethan Line Crossrail2 Thameslink BankUndergnd Waterloo etc we "might" just get the extra 300 yards of line and platform up here.

No sense in being hasty.

Improving the road network from MAN to Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and around Manchester will make a huge difference.

However, these are enormous projects (particularlt the TP road tunnel to sheffield) and will take studies, planning and a huge amount of time to construct.

The benefits of the TP tunnel to MAN speak for themselves. It would make road travel to Sheffield to under an hour and the East Midlands not much over an hour.

Some work will need to be done to sort out the A627(M) before the M60/M66 junction is improved, but overall much needed.

I'm pretty sure Osborne annouced a feasibility study into a Sheffield tunnel 12months ago £200m via the Highways Agency. Report completion date was last month.

This sounds like the journo's are sitting on their hands instead of investigating the delay !

This is the same money !!!!

HAS the study actually started ?

Is there a difference between a "viability" study and a "feasibility" study ?

I've just read the documents on the various road projects - Trans Pennine Tunnel and Manchester north west quadrant.

The north west quadrant programme could deliver around half of a brand new orbital motorway route (from the M62 east of the M60 to the M56 around the new junction with the A556). The idea being to move long distance (i.e. non-Manchester) traffic onto the new road with local traffic on the present M60.

The TP Tunnel would probably connect to the M67, probably requiring some consequential road improvements around that quadrant of the M60 to disperse traffic (I think the A6 MARR is in this area).

The surrounding infrastructure to support MAN is certainly in train.

New images?

I'm hoping to hear an update on the project soon!!

The above is a new image. There is a n old one like this, but the above image expands on the open space between the check in hall and security.

Ah! Okay, so the check in area would be visible if the camera panned to the right in the above image?

On wrong side of the aircraft? I've only seen airbridges against the left-hand doors of an aircraft.

Connection on wrong side of aircraft starboard rather than port

It looks like the USPC pier is going to be one of the middle piers, as a document I have seen shows the customs point in the same area as the security hall so therefore needs direct, uninterrupted access to the gates.

Would that mean there being "x" amount of USPC gates that are just used for US flights?

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
Heatwave Mk2 next week?
Some explosive weather build-ups currently in the North of England. What is it like where you are?

I don't believe I am quite covering enough roles at work. Its now 4 on a bad day, 5 on a good day and there is scope for a 6th and 7th role. Still on minimum pay but had the biggest payrise in the company,
