[textarea]Oxford Airport Upgrades to Cat 5 Fire & Rescue Cover

Oxford Airport has been approved to provide rescue and fire (RFFS) services for Cat 5 aircraft for the first time.

Cat 5 status allows for the charter and provision of niche aircraft shuttles in the 50 to 70-seat category including such types as the ATR-72, BAe/Avro RJ70, Saab 2000, Fokker 50 and Dash-8-300 series. For business aviation movements, Cat 5 approval also means the airport can now handle jets such as the Embraer Legacy (EMB-135). The first Legacy aircraft to be based at Oxford will arrive next month and will be available for commercial charter.

From July, Oxford Airport welcomes weekend charter flights to and from Jersey, operated by an Air Southwest Dash-8-300, which will also require Cat 5 RFFS.

The Cat 5 capability also offers opportunities to cater for charters in the 50-70 seat range for sporting or special events, conferences and exhibitions around Oxford, both in-bound to the Thames Valley region and outbound throughout the UK and overseas.

Passengers utilising private charters for such events will be able to benefit from fast transit times and the exclusive ‘VIP’ environment at the airport’s oxfordjet business aviation terminal, free from the constraints of the mainstream ‘London’ airport alternatives.

As a conference, event and meeting destination, Oxford Airport, just an hour’s drive from west London, offers some of the most impressive venues in the UK. These include Blenheim Palace, just over a mile away and the numerous Oxford University colleges such as Christchurch – used extensively as the location of Harry Potter films.

Commenting on the new opportunities, Oxford Airport’s Head of Marketing and Development, James Dillon-Godfray, said, “Having recently invested in three high-capacity fire tenders and doubled the fire crew manning over the last year, oxfordjet is now ready and fully prepared to accept aircraft types we have previously had to decline.”

Oxford Airport’s standard opening hours are between 06:30hrs to 22:30hrs seven days a week with Cat 4 RFFS at all times. The airport boasts better opening hours and now RFFS cover than most other general and business aviation airports in the south east UK and the London region specifically. Oxford Airport can also open on prior request from 06:00 to midnight.

[textarea]Chocs away! Continental flights take off from Oxford

Skiers and holidaymakers will be able to jet off to Geneva from Oxford this winter when the airport’s first ever international scheduled flights take off in December.

From December 19, London Oxford Airport in Kidlington will operate a weekly Saturday departure to Switzerland’s second biggest city during the skiing season.

Flights to the city — which is considered the gateway to the Swiss and French Alps — will be operated by the Swiss ‘full frills’ airline Baboo.

One-way tickets will cost £78.

However, this will include a free ski or snowboard allowance, free wine and canapes for the duration of the flight and generous baggage allowance.

The chief executive of Baboo, Jacques Bankir, said: “Baboo is delighted to be the first international airline to serve Oxford. Baboo is a Geneva-based niche carrier with an excellent reputation for service to exclusive destinations such as St Tropez, Biarritz or Venice.”

David Gambier, managing director of Great Experience Travel in Witney said: “Being able to fly from London Oxford to Geneva and some of the world’s greatest ski areas is going to revolutionise the whole concept of winter sports travel for this region.”

“We couldn’t be more excited at Baboo’s decision to serve Oxford, customers in this region are crying out for such convenient, quality scheduled airline options.”

[textarea]Award for Oxford Airport

Oxford Airport scooped the accolade of Best Business Aviation Airport 2009 from the Airport Operators Association (AOA). The AOA praised the airport management’s vision and commitment for successfully building an attractive business aviation facility within just 18 months, and its owners for their ongoing commitment to investment in the facility.

Oxford Airport’s Managing Director Steve Jones said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to receive this fine endorsement from the AOA. It is especially appreciated as the votes are cast by those who know the industry inside out – and who know our competitors very well. This has been a hugely challenging year for everyone in the industry and our whole team has worked so hard throughout. I accept this on behalf of all of them and congratulate them in making Oxford Airport an award-winning airport.’

A new airline called http://www.flyvarsity.com/ is being launched with flights between Oxford and Edinburgh using an 18 seater Jetstream 31 aircraft. Flights commence on the 1st March.

I heard rumours about varsity start-up, have they now been confirmed?

Their website is up and running now so I presume that is as up and running as it gets until the aircraft actually becomes airborne.

Sounds like OXFORD is really growing out of this recession. On the fruit forum, they seem to think ASW are looking into operating flights from Oxford too , not sure where to though...

Air Southwest flew a weekly Saturday charter flight on Saturdays in peak summer 2009 from Oxford to Jersey on behalf of a tour company.

CAA stats show that in August 451 people used the route, giving a 90% load factor on the 50-seat Dash 8-300 (five Saturdays in August 2009).

Wouldn't be surprised to see it repeated this summer.

Did that new airline - Varsity ever make it off the ground? I know it was due to begin on 1st March, but havent heard anything yet. I know it was definately in doubt whether it would go ahead or not.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
