As well as the jet bridge works there is also the fuel hydrant being installed (I believe it will be done from huge tanks), top deck catering loaders need to be bought as does a high level de-icing unit capable of reaching the top. The current A380 tug is apparently not in the best of nick having sat practically idle for many years, so may need some work done and A380 tow bars do not come cheap. I've also heard it suggested that there needs to be a control room on stand to monitor the wingspan as it turns in?

That's a big investment from BHX and the handling agent so it really needs to pay off.

Assuming that this goes ahead, is BHX going to be the smallest worldwide airport to see the Emirates A380? Looking at the 35 other routes it currently serves (on the Emirates UK website) I can't see a single airport there that handles less than 20mppa.

Meanwhile destinations like Oslo, Stockholm, Lisbon and Moscow are still unserved by the A380.

Excellent news and amazing to think that March this year saw just two 77Ws heading to the Middle East. Fastforward to a Saturday next year and you've got x1 A380, x2 77Ws and x2 787s (x3 if you want to add Air India). What a difference a year makes.

Congratulations Mr Kehoe and everyone involved at Emirates and BHX :drinks:

The really amazing thing is that the loads must be going through the roof and for an airport the size of BHX, you'd expect 3 daily 77Ws to be adequate...obviously not!! I still hope Dublin at 12 daily next year gives Dubai a real old battle for top spot and I'm now very glad I adjusted my pax prediction for next year :D

I still have a couple of concerns though: 1) EK39 arrives during a busy period, especially in summer with lots of holiday flights that departed in the morning arriving back around the same time. Will the A380 disrupt ground movements, and 2) How will Arrivals cope?

Fantastic news! 2016 is turning into a milestone year at BHX :drinks:

The numbers are mind boggling...

In April 2015, there were 2x daily / 14x weekly flights between BHX and the Middle East. This equated to circa 11,750 seats a week or 612,000 seats annually. Not too bad for an airport carrying 9.5million pax annually.

Fast forward to April 2016 and there will be up to 5x daily / 29x weekly flights between BHX and the Middle East. This equates to 24,500 seats weekly or 1,275,000 annually, with emirates accounting for 20,370 / 1,060,000 seats respectively...

That's an increase in capacity between BHX and the middle east of +110%, with emirates increasing capacity by some +78%!!!!

What a great Christmas present..... roll on 2016!!!!

WOW,WOW,WOW

Well despite my concerns about the situation in the MidEast,I think I am going to change my prediction for 2016.
Everyone in the route development team deserve a pat on the back and perhaps a drink or 2 to celebrate what has been a very eventful year.
Congrats to all concerned, keep up this brilliant work.

Great news, it's good to finally have it confirmed officially.

Adding a third daily 77W, swapping that to a high density 2 class 77W then upgrading one flight to a high density A380 all in the space of 6 months is quite something

Over to you Brum X.......

Excellent news.
This really is the 'cherry on the cake' of an outstanding year for BHX.
It doesn't seem all that long ago, that there was some criticism of Mr Kehoe and his team that little was being done.
In reality, they must have been very busy behind the scenes and deserve great credit for their achievements :hatsoff:
I wonder what else they're working on :s_scratchhead

Kevin

There has been alot of criticism from various places (myself included) but in fairness we did go a very long time, with very little happening, whilst there were some gaping holes in the BHX network. It's definitely clear now that alot was being done behind the scenes and William Pearson and his team deserve massive credit. There is still much to do though so I hope they're still working hard ;)

The times have changed slightly to reflect the longer turn around time.

Emirates to introduce first regular scheduled Airbus A380 service into Birmingham Airport from March 2016

Emirates has announced that it will be upgrading its EK39/40 service between Dubai and Birmingham to an Airbus A380 from 27th March 2016.

This will be the first time the iconic and much loved A380 will fly a regular service from the region, and comes as Emirates celebrates its 15th anniversary at Birmingham Airport.

It isn't the first time this aircraft has been to the Midlands based airport, in September 2009 it was flown in to be part of Birmingham Airport's 70th anniversary celebrations and for the opening of the International Pier.

This time it will be much more of a permanent feature as Emirates will be replacing the current Boeing 777 to a two-class Airbus A380 on the lunchtime service into Birmingham, carrying 557 passengers in Economy Class and 58 in Business Class. Birmingham will be the fifth route operating the new two-class A380 since it was unveiled at the Dubai Airshow in November 2015 by Emirates. The upgrade will increase daily capacity to and from the region by 15%, and means Emirates will now offer 77 A380 flights into the UK each week, more than any other country on the Emirates network.

Emirates first launched its route to Birmingham Airport on 18 December 2000 as a daily service to Dubai, operated by a 278-seat Airbus A330. As passenger numbers have risen, Emirates has added more aircraft to the route, including a third daily service introduced this year. In the last 15 years, Emirates has carried over five million passengers between Dubai and Birmingham, with over 500,000 travelling in 2015 so far.

Laurie Berryman, Emirates Vice President, UK, said: “In 15 years of operating at Birmingham, Emirates has experienced exceptional levels of growth driven by an increase in demand from the Midlands. The A380 is hugely popular amongst our passengers as it provides a unique level of service that has become synonymous with the Emirates brand. We are very excited to be the first airline to introduce the iconic A380 into the region and look forward to more of our customers enjoying the experience of flying on the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

“The launch of the new service, combined with our ongoing investment into the region, represents the huge significance we place on Birmingham and its role as a gateway to Dubai and across the globe. As we move into 2016, we look forward to another 15 successful years in the Midlands.”

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport, said: “This is really great news for the Airport and our community. The A380 will not only give an additional 188 seats a day from Birmingham but will also offer customers that want to experience the magnificent A380 aircraft an opportunity to now do so from the Midlands region and I’m certain that the service, just like the programme spanning 15 years from Birmingham Airport, will be hugely successful. We would like thank Emirates for its commitment to our region and congratulate the team on serving Birmingham to Dubai and beyond for 15 very fruitful years.”

Emirates’ wider contribution to the Midlands economy has grown alongside its expansion at Birmingham Airport, connecting local people and businesses to global destinations and markets. It now employs 31 permanent staff at the airport, with the Emirates SkyCargo team employing a further four people. Over five million meals have been made locally in Birmingham to serve Emirates passengers travelling to Dubai and up to 60 crew members stay at local hotels in Birmingham every night between flights. The airline also invested over £1 million in the Emirates Lounge at Birmingham Airport, which opened in October 2012.

Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates, has helped regional businesses export products to destinations all over the world. Over the last 15 years, Emirates SkyCargo operations at Birmingham Airport have grown significantly, with volumes up 15% year-on-year in 2014–15, accounting for 60% of the air cargo market in the Midlands.

Passengers flying from the Midlands with Emirates can travel to Dubai and beyond, to an ever expanding global network, including Bali, Multan and Mashhad which all launched in 2015. Popular destinations on the Emirates network from Birmingham include Dubai, Islamabad, Bangkok, Mumbai and Hong Kong. To book a seat on the iconic aircraft visit http://www.emirates.com

As with all Emirates flights, passengers enjoy the extra generous Emirates baggage allowance of 30kg in Economy Class, 40kg in Business Class and 50kg in First Class (only available on the Boeing 777 service). Business Class and First Class passengers can also enjoy Emirates’ complimentary Chauffeur-drive service, to and from their flights, and access the world-class Emirates lounge at Birmingham Airport. The lounge is also available for Skywards Gold and Platinum members.

EMIRATES A380 COMING TO BHX

Hi guys, sorry for being late to the party but some of us do have work to do and im still at work till 7pm but hey ho its dead so im going to use the works computer.

Well this is really fantastic news and a great Christmas present for all us BHX followers. It really puts the icing on the cake and to a great 2016.

I also think this will send out a clear message to the industry that BHX means business and is worth looking at for there expansion plans, we have the infrastructure in place now to serve these airlines if we have daily A380 operations. Onwards and Upwards.

It will be interesting to see how things are this time next year with Emirates, Qatar, Turkish and Air India all after the same passengers.

Three Cheers to the Route Devlepment team at BHX, they have truly excelled this year and long may it continue. Lets not forget even airports like Dublin or Oslo don't even have A380 operations and they serve more than double the passengers that we do, so this is really a great honour to have.

And finally.

I might even have a nice hot mulled wine when I get home to celebrate this news, not that I will need it. Has somebody forgotten to tell mother nature that it is Christmas and not Easter.

Its so warm :drinks:

I bought a very expensive new coat ready for winter and haven't worn it yet

Only three months to wait until.......

Disappointingly there is absolutely nothing about this announcement on local media. Neither ITV nor the BBC have given so much as a Tweet.

I hope that they're saving it all until tomorrow and are planning to make a big fuss, along with the 15th anniversary.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
