Aviation experts said the plane, featuring the facade of a smiling Beluga whale, was on its way to the Airbus base at Hawarden airport in north Wales from Toulouse in France for crew training when it appeared close to Liverpool's John Lennon airport around 30 miles away.
They say it lined up with the runway, descended to around 2,800 feet and performed a 'wing wave' where it dipped both of its wings in a salute, much to the delight of those watching below.
The rare and skilled manoeuvre is generally done by cargo planes to say 'goodbye' as the aircraft will never again see the home airport where it was made.

The plane descended to just under 3,000 feet
However it can also be done as a 'thank you' gesture to staff at the airbase.

AviationUpclose who shot the footage said: "A nice surprise at Liverpool this morning.
"Airbus A330 Beluga XL F-WBXL came up to Hawarden from Toulouse for some crew training prior to entering service.

"I'm not too sure if this was planned or not, but the aircraft essentially lined up with Runway 09 at LPL, overflew the airport at 2,800ft and performed and impressive wing wave before establishing at Hawarden for a circuit.
"It was absolutely awesome to see this massive aircraft performing this manoeuvre!"

Boasting one of the most voluminous cargo holds of any civil or military aircraft flying today, it can hold up to 51 tons, the equivalent of seven elephants.

Belugas are used to transport oversized air cargo such as plane parts and wings to the Airbus base in North Wales.
The Beluga XL, an upgrade on the A330, had its maiden flight in July 2018, with the first of these aircraft planned to enter service during the second half of 2019 – initially operating in parallel with the existing A300 fleet, which is will be progressively retired through 2025.

Ive of course have not been to every UK airport, but as a regular user of Liverpool I can say its generally very easy to pass through , importantly security and luggage delivery is fast.

insufficient toilets in the baggage reclaim area and landside.
it would also benefit from better public transport in the evenings and when there's a match.

Its probably enough...ive never found ive had to queue or seen any queues. Landside there is a large loo by oversize luggage.

There can always be improvements of course but its pretty good. Regular buses to South Parkway , i think one of the routes from the terminal.is 24hr...86A maybe.

my experience is not the same as yours. queues for toilets. waiting 15 minutes for buses in the evening. no taxis available.

The 86A is every 15 mins in evening, the 500 is every 30 mins and the 80A is every 20 mins...these all go to South Parkway Station and onwards to city centre.

I

never found any such prblems at Liverpool......miles better than Manchester as well...always first choice after LBA

Liverpool John Lennon Airport wins second award in a week

By Ybnews on 5th December 2019

This latest award was voted for by Airlines UK, a trade organisation that represents UK airlines and awarded to LJLA in recognition of the improvement in passenger experience.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has won two awards in a week

For the second time within a week, Liverpool John Lennon Airport has received a top industry accolade and recognised as being the best UK airport of its size.

At the Airport Operators Association (AOA) Annual Conference held in London, LJLA was announced as the winner of Best Airport (3-10 million passengers). It follows on from the Best Medium-sized UK Airport win at the 2019 British Travel Awards.

This latest award was voted for by Airlines UK, a trade organisation that represents UK airlines and awarded to LJLA in recognition of the airport’s success in offering a best in class passenger experience.

The airport’s award entry focused on a number of achievements including more destinations and more passengers whilst maintaining the highest levels of customer service.

Queue times to pass through security for 97% of all passengers is just 10 minutes or less and Liverpool is the only UK airport to receive a 5-star airport rating by the world’s leading air travel intelligence company OAG for flight punctuality.

LJLA chief executive John Irving said: “This is a special award for the airport as it demonstrates how well respected we are not only by passengers from across the region, but within the aviation industry too.

“This award is testament to all the hard work put in by our employees and business partners here at the airport to ensure the highest levels of service to both our passengers and airline customers.”

Maybe a few more airlines will take note and think about Liverpool as an airport to operate from !

Great news for Liverpool airport. The terminal building looks very similar on the outside to Doncaster's but I'm not sure if the similarity ends there. What actually remains of the old terminal building? I understand the new structure was basically built around the old building?

Not that this jusifys it but many UK airports have insufficient toilets in arrival facilities.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
