So, instead of "no great loss", it's now a great gain?
Incidentally, I felt some of you were unduly harsh on Ethan. Let's keep it friendly.

Florence is certainly a plus for you. I wish MAN could fill a few more of the gaps on its departure boards.

Where has anyone suggested it's a 'great gain'?

Any new routes are to be welcomed but as has already been said, it's four weekly Embraer flights to utilise the aircraft, hardly earth shattering news.

Definitely agree that it's great to see Florence back (y)

Also we have the following quote from David Winstanley: “Having British Airways return to Birmingham is not only great news for the airport but also the Midlands region and we are confident this is the beginning of a long-term growth plan with the airline."

It's a shame that the routes couldn't be twice per week (I'd love to go for Florence, but for 3/4 days not a whole week) BUT I am CERTAINLY not complaining - any growth is positive, and having BA back at BHX is something I think we're all pretty excited about. Plus, I understand the rationale behind why they're only operating at weekends so I guess it makes sense:shamefullyembarrassed:

Official press release from BA regarding the new flights from BHX (and BRS; all 4 destinations to be served from there too). What stood out to me is:

David Winstanley, Chief Operating Officer for Birmingham Airport, said, “Having British Airways return to Birmingham is not only great news for the airport but also the Midlands region and we are confident this is the beginning of a long-term growth plan with the airline. Launching these four routes, of which Florence is currently unserved, means British Airways and Avios card holders as well as leisure travellers looking for a two-class cabin product can travel from their more convenient airport than those further afield. We look forward to welcoming one of the world’s most recognisable and trusted brands back to Birmingham in May.”

I've just done a dummy booking to Florence in May and it's showing as an E170 rather than E190.

Wasn't Florence on your wish list so to speak Ray? 2/3 weekly would have been better for tourism, hopefully the route can grow and more rotations added if successful, Lovely destination to visit for a couple of days for sure ! Extra capacity to sun routes which should prove popular as ever and also good to see the regions benefiting instead of just London ! Good news for BHX :)

Fantastic news for Birmingham and Bristol, who cares if its about utilising LCY aircraft there are plenty of airports to choose from BA didnt have to pick BHX. FLR gets a welcome return too! Looking at the earlier posts regarding BA basing these aircraft in the regions, I'm afraid some on other airport threads talked about how special their airport was for managing to secure BA flights...maybe there is more than one "special airport" :jawdrop:

Vueling have a base at Florence so maybe if it's successful they might look at it and add some extra flights.

Daza, you are spot on re your 'special airport' comment. i think some posters have a view more akin to partisan football supporters. I am sure there are no special airports where airlines are concerned. It is business, bums on seats and yield that dictate how an airport and a route will perform - for either good or bad.

Having British Airways return to BHX is in itself welcome news, but let's be frank, their return to Man, Bhx and Brs is not out of charity - they want to make money. And i hope BHx, for one, comes up to the plate...

Always good to have another airline at BHX, to diversify choice for passengers. I'll consider BA along with other airlines for my trips to Malaga. I just hope in dealings with BA, BHX doesn't make exceptions for BA to the detriment of other airlines. We're all guilty of going a little nostalgic over BA from time to time..

Hopefully these announcements aren't the end of it and they'll announce routes for other airports.

With Birmingham being my local airport, I must admit I found it rather amusing watching this unfold, and how peoples reception of the news changed at each stage. Before judging people, I would imagine similar things would have happened if BHX or BRS had been announced before Manchester.

Whilst it will be good to see BA colours back at BHX, I must admit I'm a tad disappointed with the flight times. I don't tend to fly out to Spain that often so can't speak personally, but do flights that are that late put people off? Or is it less of a factor in choosing who to fly with?

I think any new service should be welcomed but would these flights be gaining so much coverage if it was someone other than BA flying them? And the question that should be asked is whether these flights would be operating if LCY was open at the weekend? #perspective

The answer to the first question is clearly no, but is coverage a bad thing for new services? I don't think so.

If I am planning a flight, I look at the arrival time at destination airport and accessability to get to resort. If you are on an IT you are transferred by the Tour operator - no problem (except for lack of sleep).
If you have booked yourself, then you have to ensure onward transfer. At the planned arrival times in Spain, it would have to be a Taxi and dependent on resort, could be quite an expensive item negating the cost saving in using a "night flight".

I think that these flights are aimed at people who have owned accomodation over there.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
