Luton airport gains new Romania link

Romanian no-frills airline Blue Air is to start flying from Luton to Bacau next month.

The service to Bacau, which is in northern Romania at the foothills of the Carpathian mountains, is the second UK route for Blue Air, which already flies between Stansted and the capital Bucharest.

The Bacau flight will use a Boeing 737 aircraft and will operate twice a week, departing Luton at 23.30 on Mondays and 00.55 on Fridays. Flights arrive at Bacau at 04.45 on Tuesdays and 06.10 on Fridays.

Bacau is in the historical region of Moldavia and on the Bistrita river.

Luton airport airline manager Simon Harley said: “We are delighted to announce the arrival of Blue Air at the airport.

Low fares flying continues to make business and leisure travel increasingly accessible to millions of Europeans and the launch of this service to Bacau provides yet more choice for our passengers."

Blue Air are beginning a code share with Cyprus Airlines.

Starting on December 3rd, Cyprus Airways’ customers will be able to fly from Larnaca to London Luton, Athens, Thessaloniki and Bucharest through the codeshare agreement with Blue Air.

In turn, Blue Air will place its flight code on Cyprus Airways flights to Athens, Thessaloniki, Prague, Tel Aviv and Beirut. Other routes may be added in future.

Cyprus Airways, the former flag carrier of Cyprus, ceased operations in 2015. Following the airline’s bankruptcy, the Cypriot start-up company Charlie Airlines Ltd, in which the Russian S7 Airlines holds 40% as a joint-venture, acquired the right to use the Cyprus Airways trademarks and operate under the brand.
