I'm struggling to think of a finer meal


We're having a BBQ tonight and I noticed a couple of bottles of Semillon Chardonnay in the fridge, that'll do whilst we're outside

The Semillon went down well but didn't last long. I'm now making a large dent in my Islay single malt whilst Mrs F is draining the last of her Orange Truffle Baileys

My favourite single malts are Laphroig and Talisker, I couldn't choose between them.

Last night I finished of a bottle of Ben Bracken bought from LIDL. It's not quite up to the standard of those mentioned above but it is decent and costs only £19.

Although I've missed visiting islet for the last 3 years I would still agree with your choice of any Laphroig single malts.

I'm currently enjoying a glass of Auchentosh "American Oak" although it is not in the same class as Laphroig.

I lost my mother the year after and likewise, I will always cherish the memories.

I think I was extremely fortunate to have two of the most devoted and loving parents anyone could wish for. The greatest compliment that I could offer them is that I aim to replicate with my own children everything they did for my sister and I. If they have even half the love for me that I have for my own parents then I'll consider it job done.

I shall say a quiet prayer with my glass of Malbec.

After finishing the South African Chenin Blanc I happen to have come across a bottle of Three Barrels brandy in the cupboard which I didn't even realise was there.

I don't mind Three Barrels. We've got a couple of bottles in the sideboard.

A friend of mine who thinks he's a bit of an authority on spirits once decried Three Barrels, saying it was a bit tasteless. Some time later by sheer coincidence we bought a bottle and decanted it. When he came around to see us the next time, I poured him a glass from the decanter. After a couple of sips he said, "Here, this isn't bad. What is it?" I played dumb and said I couldn't remember. Since then he's often unknowingly drunk Three Barrels at our house and apparently enjoyed it every time. I'll enlighten him one of these days.

Out of interest does anyone on here have the remotest idea what they are doing when the waiter pours a drizzle of wine then waits for your approval? Am I the only one who looks up smiling and says "mmmm, that's really nice"?

I appreciate that they are looking for wine that may be 'corked' but in today's world most bottles are screw top and when the waiter undoes one and still asks you to taste one wonders, why?!

You're right about 'corking' and I suppose there might be an occasion when for whatever reason wine in a screw-top bottle might be 'off', but that would be obvious to the waiter after you'd taken your first sip and cried out, "Ugh!", whether you'd taken your test taste or not. The bottle would have to be ditched either way.

I'm a bit of a philistine when it comes to alcohol. I know what I like which often involves preferring cheaper wine over more expensive. The same applies with spirits. I'm not talking about god awful stuff but say a £5 bottle in Tescos compared with something a lot more expensive on sale in a 'decent' wine shop. I've watched 'experts' on tv programmes in the past 'blind tasting' various wines and there were often occasions when the cheapo supermarket variety gained their approval over more expensive wine.

A chap I know drinks Bacardi and coke. It must be Coca Cola. He won't drink Pepsi or any other brand of cola with his Bacardi. If someone gave me unmarked glasses of Coca Cola or Pepsi Cola to sip I would not have a clue which was which - that phiistine temperament again.

I am exactly the same.

Several years ago I popped in to Selfridges and bought a very, very expensive bottle of red for Mrs F's birthday. After a few mouthfuls we looked at each other in union and commented that it wasn't the best wine that we had ever tasted. I remember opening a bottle of ASDA Rioja afterwards which cost less than £5 and it was much more to our tastes.

The only alcohol where I may be considered a bit of a snob is when it come to Scotch, it just has to be single malt. Funnily enough my father-in-law is a tight proud Yorkshireman and upon our first meeting I declined his offer of a double shot of Bells. Once back at their house I let it slip that I was a single malt man and to my surprise he whipped out a bottle of Laphroig and said 'it's all that I ever drink, I just didn't want you to think of me as a snob'.

Needless to say that our mutual love of Scotch has been getting into bother with out wives ever since, although I'm always to blame
