Press release just issued:
As the Commonwealth Games start this week Qantas has announced today that will start a direct service between Gold Coast International Airport the host city of the 2018 Games with Birmingham the host of the 2022 Games. The three weekly services will run from 1 April 2019 in our New Boeing 787 14F series the latest addition to the 787 fleet.
Qantas communications director Filip Aroo says: "This is an exciting new opportunity and it will be the first time Australia's fastest growing city will be connected with Europe's and Britain's economic hub. The connection between the two cities will strengthen during the transition of the Commonwealth Games and we figured as we will have to hand the torch over next year why not take a few passengers with us."
The Chief Executive of Birmingham International Airport was unavailable to comment but one insider was heard to gasp "what about Orlando!!!!?"
The new 787 14F will be named Sir Trev 'n' Bev in honour of two of Birmingham's most significant cultural icons.
And today of all days.
