The wind is forecast to be gusting over 70mph in the South West on Monday morning so anticipate delays and cancellations!

Today's forecast was such that I expected a lot of disruption at BRS. The prediction was for rain all day (which we had without a break and torrential at times - all home League football matches in the South West were postponed because of waterlogged pitches) and gales of 60 mph or above.

The concern was that the wind direction shown on the tv forecasts was going to be mainly south or sou, sou west which would have introduced a considerable crosswind element to BRS's east-west runway.

In the event although the wind direction seemed accurately predicted, at least where I live a few miles from BRS, the strength didn't seem to be as strong as forecast although the gusts were very lively at times.

So far today only two flights into BRS had to divert elsewhere.

EZY 444 due from Belfast International at 1115 went to Cardiff as did EI 3842 from Cork due at 1215.

The forecast for Monday that I saw earlier this evening seemed to suggest winds from the west or west sou west where at least the crosswind component might not be too bad.

The one thing that must have been very uncomfortable today at BRS was boarding and leaving the aircraft in the heavy rain and very strong wind in the absence of air bridges.

the outward bound ace flight was diverted into cdf with a medical emergency. the plane reg was g ezui a320, the orange one. they wanted a longer runway as plane was heavy.

The BBC news channel has just reported the M48 river Severn bridge is closed to high sided vehicles. It's hard to believe it's so windy there, up here in Leeds it's almost calm right now! It's going to be an interesting night at the airport,

That's the original Severn Bridge - the M48. It's not uncommon for it to be closed to high-sided vehicles when the wind is gusting.

The 'new' Severn Crossing - the M4 - is still open currently with a 40 mph speed limit. Weather has closed it in the past but in general it's far less prone to cross winds than the original Severn Bridge, apparently because of its design.

If the M4 crossing does have to close (if it does you can guarantee so will the M48 crossing) South Wales will be pretty well cut off with the only egress (and access) via the 'long way round' (ie via Gloucester).

Despite the gusts this evening BRS seems to be coping at the moment with no diversions yet.

The wind is gusting quite noisily outside my house at the moment but we are promised a lot worse by the morning

Despite the horrendous weather today - severe gales up to 75 mph in parts of the city plus torrential storms for much of the day - there were no cancellations or diversions at BRS.

71 arrivals were scheduled and only 20 remain to land at the time of typing. Hopefully they will experience no difficulty as the wind is supposed to be abating.

CWL. for once, fared much worse with seven diversions and three cancellations, with two of the diversions, a Contract Air B 733 and an Aer Lingus Regional(Stobart) ATR 72, coming into BRS.

It was an unfortunate time for the weather to affect CWL as it was a busy day with several additional flights returning from Dublin following yesterday's Six Nations rugby match between Ireland and Wales.

French ATC strike today has resulted in some easyJet cancellations from BRS.

EZY 6155/6156 Geneva out 1306 back 1710 cancelled. The other three easyJet GVA rotations today appear to be operating so hopefully the disruption to passengers will be alleviated to a degree.

EZY 6167/6168 Amsterdam out 1810 back 2140 cancelled.

EZY 6165/6166 Amsterdam out 1425 back 1730 is showing indefinite delay on the return sector.

EZY 6029/6030 Barcelona out 1710 back 2205 cancelled.

EZY 6085/6086 Basel out 1750 back 2150 cancelled.

Aer Lingus Regional (Stobart) EI 3842/3843 Cork in 1215 out 1240 cancelled although it's difficult to see where the ATC action in France contributed unless the aircraft has been delayed on a previous flight through French airspace.

In addition there are a number of very long delays with the worst so far one of nearly nine hours on an easyJet from Alicante due at 1310 and one of nearly that length on an easyJet from Glasgow due 1640. The passengers on this one are particularly unlucky as three other easyJet Glasgow rotations are not anything like as badly affected.

Addendum

EZY 6166 from Amsterdam previously showing indefinite delay landed at 2017.

EZY 6072 from Alicante previously showing nine hour delay to its 1310 scheduled arrival time now shown as cancelled. The outbound flight EZY 6071 should have departed BRS at 0730 but the departure page on the airport website merely shows Final Boarding.

Did BRS take any diversions from Gatwick earlier today following the problems with Storm Katie there? I read that some easyJet flights for LGW went to LPL and MAN amongst other airports.

I know that BRS has taken easyJet diversions in the past but the BRS web arrivals page never seems to feature diversions in from other airports. With BRS closer to LGW than LPL and MAN it would seem odd if nothing Orange went into BRS unless there was no room.

CWL took a diversion from Bournemouth last night. Approx 23:30 hrs

Enquiries were made yesterday morning if BRS could accept possible diversions from the London Airports, but in the end nothing came. The worst of the weather in the Bristol area passed through between 3-5am & by the time flights started at 6 there were no problems with the daily operations. The Thomson B737 that diverted from BOH, had originally planned to come to BRS, but opted for CWL in the end due to fog at BRS in the early hours before the strong winds. CWL also had a BA 787 (see the Cardiff thread)

Two Ryanair rotations for Thursday 31 March already cancelled - Tenerife and Girona.

The 3 x daily Brussels Airlines (op by bmi regional) Brussels rotations remain 'grounded' since the atrocities at BRU last last week.

I find it slightly odd that they bmi has not been able to squeeze a service out of Antwerp, Charleroi or Liege even if it's just 1 flight a day.

The complete list of cancellations today due to industrial action in France was:

Ryanair - Tenerife, Girona and Alicante

easyJet - Nantes, Paris Cdg and Nice

Interesting that easyJet cancelled its Cdg rotation yet bmi regional operated both its rotations to Cdg.

Today's three Brussels Airlines rotations, operated by bmi regional, were cancelled again following last week's atrocities at BRU.

The early EI Regional (Stobart) from/to Dublin was cancelled today - I don't know why.

There is a strike in Italy tomorrow that will reportedly lead to flight cancellations.

Already tomorrow's Ryanair Bergamo rotation has been cancelled.

Earlier this week there was a pubic sector strike in Greece leading to flight cancellations although I'm not aware that any BRS flights were affected and last week we had yet another French ATC strike. The way things are going strikes could be a regular feature this summer.
