This summer i have noticed the following

Both EZY and FR flights due in after 22:00 hrs are routinely going late to well past midnight. Is there an acceptance with both these airlines that given the tight rotations during the day for each aircraft, they will accept delays in the final flight of the day as long as the planes are back at base and ready for next days rotations?

This is quite a shortsighted view if true as it has major knock on effects for ground handlers and other stakeholders as they have staffed their rotas according to need and they were not expecting this many flights after midnight due to delays. In turn passengers get bad experiences due to delays and handlings problems at BRS.

Further it must eat into the crew hours a lot.

I don't know whether it's a national thing with European ATC staffing levels, industrial disputes and sometimes weather all having a part to play with delayed aircraft towards the end of the day.

As far as BRS is concerned, they are beginning the process of asking the local authority to amend the night flight quota from 3,000 movements per annum in the BST period and 1,000 per annum in the GMT period to 4,000 throughout the year irrespective of season. This reflects the overuse in the summer period and the underuse in the winter.

* On Sunday a BRS Ryanair flight to Malaga was cancelled leaving passengers in the lurch. One couple contacted the local press - see link below - and said they had re-booked on an easyJet flight to Malaga today. I hope for their sakes they booked on the easyJet early morning flight today and not the cancelled one this evening. Now that would make a story for the BRS-loving Bristol Post.

It looks as though the Thomas Cook IBZ operated after all.

Today's cancellations:

Ryanair FR8108 from Malaga at 1040 returning as FR8109 at 1105
flybmi BM1837 to Hamburg at 1740 returning as BM1838 at 2135
easyJet EZY6057 to Malaga at 1940 returning as EZY6058 at 0130 (Mon)

The Ryanair rotation was cancelled on the previous Sunday too but next Sunday's rotation is still bookable. There is a second Ryanair Malaga rotation later in the day but whether there was room for the displaced morning passengers is highly unlikely I would have thought given the start of the main school holidays. easyJet too has a second Malaga rotation but that is early morning and anyway the space aspect would apply with that as well. I hope that those who were flying out on holiday on these two flights were able to make some sort of alternative arrangement.

Looks like just one rotation cancelled today.

Ryanair FR8224 to Rzeszow at 0630 returning as FR8225 at 1230.

I don't know why it was cancelled. It was already listed as a cancellation yesterday evening. Tomorrow's first Ryanair Dublin rotation of the day is cancelled - it's a DUB-based aircraft and crew and Ryanair's Irish-based pilots are taking their latest day of strike action tomorrow.

Im wondering how TC sorted out flight MT1707 to Ibiza. Its a charter flight and it did that rotation 7 days earlier.Pax had to get back and also pax booked on the cancelled flight.So in a nut shell how did it pan out as there surely pax stuck at both ends. Any one any ideas or what or how they sorted it.

According to FR24 both MT1706 and MT1707 operated on Sunday although both with delays. I searched both the flight number and the aircraft registration and both are showing as operated. If FR24 is to be believed then the question of what happened to pax is not applicable.

I think as a general rule charter operators tend to charter another aircraft from a third party or have a long delay until the following day for example.

In the past when I've booked a holiday to Switzerland with TUI the carrier was easyJet (Geneva) on each occasion. Later this year my brother-in-law and his wife who live in Devon are going to Sardinia on a TUI holiday and the carrier is easyJet (Olbia).

I'm always slightly apprehensive because if easyJet cancels the flight then almost certainly no holiday (the cost would be refunded by TUI with whom the contract was made but that's not the point). However, if TUI (or Thomas Cook) uses their own aircraft the flights always seem to operate even if they are a day late - we saw this in the winter with the airport snow closures. I just hope my brother-in-law doesn't make the journey from Devon to be confronted with one of easyJet's cancellations.

Charter carriers won't cancel because of the package element in getting customers to their destination, home or abroad. There have been instances where is no other option. This could ve extensive weather disruption that completely wrecks the program and theres no alternative carriers that can be chartered in. Its very rare. With Tour operators it is still a package so I think most would look at alternatives to get their customers where they need to be. For example it could be that EZY don't have alternatives but TUI holidays could source something with another carrier.

There was discussion on Dried Fruit about cancellations by easyJet with no notice on the day. As I know her from years ago (when she was the AA Sales Manager in the year 'dot') I dropped Ali Gayward an email and had the following response within 18 hours.....

You are probably aware that there have been huge levels of disruption across Europe once again this summer, leading to widespread delays and cancellations. This disruption has been caused by weather, and more significantly industrial action, especially in France. So far this year, French ATC strikes have increased by 300 per cent versus 2017. Last month, the French Senate confirmed that France alone is responsible for 33 per cent of flight delays in Europe.

The resulting delays across all of our network end up with crews out of base, working into their days off, and we use up all of our available standby crew and aircraft.

However, that said, we recognise that we rely on our ground handling agents and our app, to ensure customers are kept up to date about the status of their flights. The app should always contain the most up to date information, whilst informing crew at the gates, for example, can be a more manual process. At times of such widespread disruption, the cause of an individual flight’s disruption, when many other services are also impacted, can become unclear, especially given often a situation which is changing rapidly as spare crew or aircraft are being sought.

However, I will pass on your comments to our base team in Manchester and request that all is done in future to ensure that the most accurate information available is shared.
