Race Fan Notches Up 62nd TT Visit with Manx2.com

No one has left a comment about this article yet. Go on, be the first!

One lucky TT fan has had star treatment since the start of practice week, thanks to Manx2.com and the Department of Tourism and Leisure.

Barry Briggs is visiting the Isle of Man to watch the TT – for the 62nd time!

Manx2.com was so impressed with his dedication that it flew Mr Briggs to the Island for free from Leeds-Bradford airport in time for the start of practice week, where he was met with a red carpet reception led by the company’s Senior Manager, Judith Musgrave, and political member for the Department of Tourism and Leisure, Geoff Corkish MBE MHK.

Seventy-eight year old Mr Briggs, who is from Keighley in West Yorkshire, used to travel to the Island regularly to watch the races with his wife. However, since her death nine years ago and despite his ill health, he continues to visit the Isle of Man and pursue his love of motorbike racing.

His dedication has also been recognised by the DTL, which has presented him with a solid silver commemorative tankard.

Manx2.com’s Senior Manager, Judith Musgrave, commented 'Barry Briggs is a fantastic ambassador for both the Isle of Man and the TT, and it is our pleasure to be able to bring him to the island as our guest of honour this year. Such dedication is wonderful to see and I hope he has a fantastic stay.'

Mr Briggs commented: 'The TT is the highlight of my year and the atmosphere watching the racing is just amazing. As soon as I got on the plane to the Isle of Man, the adrenaline started again and my star treatment from Manx2.com has been wonderful!

The TT holds some wonderful memories for me, particularly of watching legends such as Geoff Duke and David Jefferies. I’m delighted to be here again and can’t wait to watch the action in Race Week.'

This service is now getting beoynd a joke. What use is a once a day service to businessmen? I am not surprised that we only had 533 passengers on it in August.

Is this a route that Flybe could be possibly be interested in?? I'm sure they would do a better job of it although I'm sure it would have to be only served once daily as I'm sure they couldn't fill two Dash 8's each day!

Is this something that White Heather could enquire about at the next meeting at LBA as to what Manx 2's long term plans are with the LBA - IOM route is? Thanks in advance. :pleasantry:

The Isle of Man is only a small Island and who really wants to go there? I can't imagine there been a huge demand other than during the TT races. How many businessmen need to travel between the island and the mainland, not that many I wouldn't have thought. A daily flight is going to be better than using a ferry.

There are quite a lot of Yorkshire folk who have second homes in IOM and it is a popular walking destination. I am sure a larger and more well known airline could do better than Manx 2 although from memory there have been quite a few opperators on this route. Knight Air, British Airways, Eastern Airways and Manx 2 so i am not sure how attractive this route will look to other airlines.

Don't forget the students, I have known quite a few Manx students in Leeds over the years.

The problem Leeds has is that there continues to be a battle between IOM - LPL and IOM - MAN. Far too much capacity and unstainable fares as the airlines battle for position, but its good in the short term for the punter. Of course anyone from the travelling to/from Leeds or West Yorkshire has to be swayed to pay more for the convenience of flying to/from Leeds. e.g weekend trip in October, £170 with Manx2 or £95 with Easyjet at LPL. Multiply that up say for a family or 2 , 3 or 4 and its hundreds of pounds.

And in the view of many people, from LPL you get to fly there on a 'proper' plane! Frankly I could hardly be bothered driving all the way to LPL to get on a plane and fly what must take no more than 15 minutes. It is amazing that Easyjet can make such a short sector pay on an A319. From memory the largest aircraft we have had on this route was way back in the 70's when British United operated it with a Handley Page Herald. Since then each operator seems to use smaller and smaller equipment, which I suspect reflects smaller and smaller loads. It isn't that long ago that Manx2 were proclaiming LBA as their busiest route!

My first flight ever as a youngster was to the Isle of Man in a Silver City Bristol 170 or probably the passenger version of the 170, a Wayfarer maybe. This was in 1958.
The return journey was diverted to Blackpool, as Leeds was fog bound. I think eventually Silver City became part of Manx Airways., and now we have Manx2!!

Has anyone noticed the summer 2011 Manx2 timetable on their website? Shows a big increase in flights, including 3 on a Sunday.

It is reported that a Manx2.com aircraft has crashed in fog at Cork with loss of life.

Really sad news to hear. I'ld just like to point out that this incident is already been reported in the worldwide airline forum on here at. post17277.html#p17277
If you like to add any corresponding post to this subject please post in the above forum as this thread should only be used for Manx2’s LBA related issues only. Thankyou.

The countdown is on to the world-famous TT races and getting there from Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) has never been easier. Manx2.com will be selling tickets for an increased schedule of flights to and from the Isle of Man during the TT period (May 28th until June 12th) for just £39.95 one way, including taxes and charges.

The Isle of Man TT is a motorcycle racing event held on closed public roads. The 37.7 mile Mountain Course is celebrating its centenary this year and racing looks set to be as competitive as ever. In 2010, Bingley’s Ian Hutchinson entered the record books as the only man to have won all five solo races.

Manx2.com Chairman Noel Hayes, said: “The TT festival is the biggest event on the Isle of Man’s road racing calendar and attracts tens of thousands of visitors, some who’ve been here before and some who are visiting for the first time. There’s always plenty going on and it’s also an opportunity to see some of the Island’s spectacular scenery and places of interest, such as the Story of Mann sites. We have been selling tickets for the Leeds Bradford route for five years now and it’s still as popular as ever with travellers heading in both directions.”

Leeds Bradford Airport's Commercial Director, Tony Hallwood, said: “The Isle of Man TT is a hugely exciting event and is a must see for all motor racing fans. Darren Thwaites, one of our Airport Fire Crew, is a big fan and can’t speak highly enough of the event and the Island as a whole. Of course, as always, we’re looking forward to welcoming both business and leisure travellers from the Island too, and they’re sure to receive a warm welcome in Yorkshire.”

Hmmm, whilst Im glad everybody is safe, I wonder what the future could hold for Manx2. Whilst it was in different circumstances, the Cork crash is still fresh in some people's memories, and this will not do their publicity any good at all.

Yes, I am just glad all are OK. I agree though that this is now the second incident in 2 years, so I do fear for the impact this will have.

The Isle of Man Airport Director Ann Reynolds was interviewed by the local Isle of Man radio station this moring regarding yesterday evening's incident involving a Links Air, BAe Jetstream 31 aircraft that was operating inbound from Leeds/Bradford.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
