[textarea]No health risk from ‘naked’ airport scanners

Radiation from full-body scanners, also called 'naked' scanners as they produce an image of passengers without clothes, currently being used at Manchester Airport should not be a ‘barrier’ to air travel, a new report has said. The Manchester Evening News reports that scientists from the Health Protection Agency have been testing the controversial device amid concerns it could pose a threat to passengers’ health.

In June this year an American scientist called for more research into the machine after questioning the amount of radiation to which parts of the body are exposed. Dr David Brenner, head of Columbia University’s centre for radiological research, raised concerns the dose on to the skin was 20 times higher than previously thought – with the most likely risk being skin cancer. But public health officials have put the radiation volumes into context.

Axel Macdonald, of the HPA’s centre for radiation, chemicals and environmental hazards, said: ‘Since the start of the year a huge amount of attention has been paid to the use of X-ray security scanners in UK airports. Some people have been concerned about the privacy issues while others have raised fears about their health from further radiation exposure.'

‘What has not been widely reported in the coverage is that radiation doses from this technology are very small, especially when compared to those that air travellers receive from cosmic rays when flying. The body scan dose from a single scan gives passengers about the same amount of radiation as they will receive in 15 seconds from cosmic rays while flying at 35,000ft. If the government opts to roll out this technology to all UK airports our advice to the travelling public would be do not see this technology as a barrier to air travel.’

Experts say people living in Britain are already exposed to natural radiation and can safely pass through the body scanner 5000 times a year. Manchester Airport’s Sarah Barrett told the newspaper: ‘We welcome the latest report from the Health Protection Agency and we continue to inform our passengers about the process and their use at this airport. We have three scanners at the airport now and feedback from our customers remains positive about their use here.’

[textarea]Inspection finds passport control problem at Manchester Airport

An inspection of Manchester Airport found a major security breach - that international passengers could have walked out of the airport without having their passport checked. The chief inspector of the UK Border Agency (UKBA), John Vine, criticised the airport and the UKBA after finding the problem.

In May Mr Vine and a team of inspectors carried out a review of processes at Manchester Airport. They found that international passengers with tickets for connecting flights to other parts of the UK could bypass passport controls and walk out on to the street at Terminal Three.

Passengers arriving at international terminals were taken by bus straight to Terminal Three without going through passport and UK Visa checks. Terminal Three is a domestic terminal, and so does not have UK Immigration controls, so they could have left the terminal unchecked.

The airport amended procedures to remove this potential as soon as it was identified. There is no evidence that any international transfer passengers did not board their connecting flight.

Does it take an inspection to point out a glaring weakness like this?

What is the management at MAN being paid for?

[textarea]Fighter jets scrambled to intercept passenger jet

Radio problems on a passenger plane caused a security alert prompting a call out by RAF fighter jets. Pilots operating the Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled to intercept the bmibaby plane after it lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday.

The passenger plane was on route from Prague to Manchester Airport when the alert was triggered. A spokesman for the airline said the pilot had restored radio contact before the Typhoon fighters from RAF Coningsby arrived, and that no passengers and crew had been put at risk during the radio malfunction.

The RAF said its response was part of its role to protect the UK's airspace. An MoD spokesman said: ‘Typhoon aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched on Sunday to investigate a BMI flight that had lost radio contact with air traffic control before it landed safely at Manchester Airport.’

[textarea]Manchester Airport use holograms to speed up security search

Manchester Airport has become the first airport in the World to use holograms as part of its passenger security preparation. The cutting edge technology, which is well established in the music industry including bringing the animated band Gorillaz to life, is being trialled in an effort to cut security queues.

From Monday, passengers in Terminal 1 will be met by John and Julie; recordings of customer service staff John Walsh and Julie Capper who work at the airport. The eye catching holograms will greet passengers before they enter the security search area to explain the liquid restrictions and remind them to have their boarding cards ready.

Another step closer to removing humans from the job altogether. This reminds me when you go to the supermarket and they try to encourage you to use the 'self check-out' machines. It wouldn't be so bad if you got a discount off your groceries but you don't. No doubt we wont receive a reduction in the price of your airline ticket or your security charges.

[textarea]Businessman in court over Manchester Airport parking scams

Manchester Airport is investigating a series of car parking scams that have already cost £500,000, the MEN reports. In one scam holidaymakers’ cars were dumped in fields after they paid for them to be stored in secure compounds. Another involved so-called ‘shuffling’ – in which cars were left in the airport’s short stay car parks but the substantial fees were dodged, leaving the scammers paying as little as £2 for a fortnight’s parking.

Airport bosses and police have launched a crackdown after it was discovered the scams were costing it tens of thousands of pounds a year. And the first person to be caught has been hauled before the courts. Brian Pearson, director of MIA Secure Parking, was prosecuted for charging premium rates to keep cars in a high-security compound – then illegally storing them at an airport short stay for practically nothing.

Appearing at Minshull Street Crown Court Pearson, 51, admitted swindling more than £900 from customers who paid for secure parking with his company. He also admitted scamming the airport for £6,267 in unpaid car park fees he avoided through so-called ‘shuffling. The technique involved a driver illegally obtaining an extra ticket when they entered a car park and using it to remove a second vehicle – the holidaymakers’ car that should have been in a secure compound. The second vehicle may have been stored at the airport for weeks, but the ticket to release it would show only minutes since it was issued at the entrance.

Mr Pearson, of Ashdene Road, Wilmslow, earlier pleaded guilty to fraud in my opinion, and obtaining services dishonestly, totalling £7,200. He was spared jail after the judge heard he admitted his crimes and that no cars were broken into or damaged. He was ordered to carry out 250 hours’ unpaid work in the community.

The court heard how since Pearson’s crimes were uncovered in August 2009, the airport has stepped up security at its car parks. Speaking after the case, airport managing director Andrew Harrison said: ‘We regret that so many passengers fell foul of Mr Pearson’s actions. Because the airport is open to the public, we cannot control unscrupulous operators and this is why we provide car parks that are patrolled by the police, are monitored by CCTV and fully lit by floodlights. Additionally, the introduction of automatic number plate recognition means this type of fraud in my opinion won’t happen again.’

Airside Clearance

Hi

I use to work at Heathrow Airport for 7 years and left in 2007. I was able to work airside as I was cleared. Does anyone know what kind of security clearance was this? Am i able to use/take this clearance to other employers outside of the Airport?

Regards

Tosh1

Re: Airside Clearance

I suspect you will need to submit a new Disclosure Scotland to get a new pass as it's been a long time since you worked at London Heathrow.

Manchester airport to install new scanners

[textarea]Manchester Airport invest £12m in new luggage screening technology

Manchester Airport has announced a £12 million investment in new high-speed passenger luggage screening x-ray technology developed by Rapiscan Systems to speed up its hand baggage security search.

The Real Time Tomography (RTT) machines are designed to generate extremely high-resolution 3-D X-ray images of passenger baggage at far higher speeds and greater reliability than the technology currently in use. As a result, RTT significantly improves detection of potential threats to aviation security, reduces delays in baggage handling, increases the efficiency of airport operations and improves the overall experience of airport customers.

Installation of the new machines is expected to begin in Spring 2012 with the project completed by Autumn 2012.

Re: Manchester Airport Security, Immigration & Border Contro

The BBC is reporting that Manchester airport terminal 1 has been closed. Some flights have been grounded and a terminal evacuated following a security alert. A Manchester airport spokesman said a suspicious bag was found at the main security search area at Terminal 1 at 08.30 BST.

[textarea]Passports not checked at Manchester Airport

Passengers from three international flights that landed at Manchester Airport did not have their passports checked, the BBC reports that airport has confirmed. Up to 100 passengers from Amsterdam, Brussels and Antwerp missed immigration checks when they were sent down the domestic arrivals channel by mistake.

The airport said it was a mistake by handling agents in Terminal 3, and not UK Border Agency staff. A spokesman for the airport said it was ‘not good enough’ and they will 'make sure that there's no way that this can happen again.’

[textarea]Boy, 11, boards plane to Italy at Manchester Airport without passport

An 11-year-old boy boarded a flight to Italy on his own without a passport, tickets or boarding pass, Manchester Airport has confirmed.

The boy got through a security screen by mingling with a family going through Terminal 1 on Tuesday afternoon.

He was discovered while the Jet2 plane was in mid-air after passengers became suspicious.

A Manchester Airport spokesman said a number of airline staff had been suspended.

He said: "It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate.

"The boy went through full security screening, so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised."

It is believed the boy had earlier run away from home.

He was flown home on Tuesday evening.

Re: Manchester Airport Security, Immigration & Border Contro

I fear it is getting easier for this to happen. Nowadays people can print their own boarding cards at home and bi-pass the check-in process where passports are checked by airline staff. This wouldn't have made a difference in this case but it does make it easier for things to go wrong.

The security screening process would normally only require the passengers boarding card to be checked. The last point in the terminal where checks are carried out is at the boarding gate where both the passengers boarding card and passport are checked prior to embarkation. The airline staff would normally then do a head count to ensure the correct number of people are on board the aircraft.

Recent problems with Border Control have highlighted the government inability to protect the UK borders. Other countries have border control at both arrival and departure points at airports. This is what I feel needs to happen in the UK. The process of checking passports needs to be taken out of the hands of private businesses.

Re: Manchester Airport Security, Immigration & Border Contro

This is both the idiotic airport and airline fault.

The airport should be doing there job right especially at this time with the Olympics around the corner and the airline... Well there crew should be doing a head count and checking the manifest and they should have noticed something was odd, I am ashamed my local airline has ended up involved in something like this.

Concorde Lover, do you ever think your comments through before posting them?

Imagine this, Manchester airport handles around 19,000,000 million passengers each year. Each passenger has their boarding pass checked at least twice, that's 38,000,000 million boarding pass checks each year!

It is easy for this sort of thing to happen especially with a young child. He has obviously latched onto a larger family group making it harder for airport and airline staff to see him. He was probably quite small at 11 years of age. As the airport has already said, the boy was processed through the airport security in the normal way so he wasn't found to be carrying anything he shouldn't be. Accidents happen and that's what this is. It's not the first and it wont be the last time it happens either.

The same thing happened at Gatwick airport back in October 2010. Read about what happened there in this thread.

Re: Manchester Airport Security, Immigration & Border Contro

Im afraid Aviador, that there are some that cannot help themselves when it comes to having a pop at a rival airport/city.

Im noticing it quite a lot lately, with comments like ConcordeLovers post, and on another site, someone has put (in reference to MAN) 'we don't want to be associated with that lot over the hill'. Other comments include 'rather travel an extra day and via a hub than give my custom to the airport over the hill', and 'the airport that shall not be named'.

I know people love to support their home city/airport, but sometimes this rivalry is just borderline pathetic. Not even being able to bring yourself to even write the name of a rival airport for example, is just sad. If it wasn't grown men writing this nonsense, it would be funny.

In terms of the issue re: the boy, not all airlines do a headcount.

BA/Virgin do not conduct one at all, and Thomson will only conduct one if both front and back doors have been used for boarding, and it is 'away from base'.

Re: Manchester Airport Security, Immigration & Border Contro

I agree User001. Lets keep the debate sensible. Not everybody has such outrageous views in fact the majority of people on here are realists. In any case market forces will always prove to be the deciding factor and if Manchester airports passenger figures are anything to go by, speaks for itself really.

...back to the debate about the breach in security.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
