First Minister unveils Refill Wales water fountains at Cardiff Airport on National Refill Day

The First Minister for Wales, Rt Hon Mark Drakeford AM has visited Cardiff Airport today (19 June 2019) to mark National Refill Day, by officially unveiling three brand new tap water Refill Stations.
Customers flying from Wales’ national airport can now fill their own reusable containers with high quality tap water at three Refill Stations, supporting the reduction of plastic waste and saving money at the same time.
One Refill Station is located in the Departure Lounge, ideal for customers who are relaxing before travel, the second is next to the Departure Gates for customers preparing to fly and the third is in the Baggage Reclaim Hall, a useful location for customers to fill up their water bottle on arrival into the UK, before travelling onwards.
Cardiff Airport’s locations are now three of 600 Refill Stations in Wales registered on the free Refill App, which can be downloaded via refill.org.uk
City to Sea, a not-for-profit organisation headed by entrepreneur Natalie Fee, launched the award-winning Refill Scheme in 2015. Now being rolled out nationwide with full support of Welsh Government and water companies Dŵr Cymru and Hafren Dyfrdwy, Refill will substantially increase the availability of high quality drinking water. It has never been easier to swap a single use plastic bottle for a free taste of the rolling Welsh mountains.
The First Minister for Wales, Rt Hon Mark Drakeford AM said: “We are increasingly understanding that our modern obsession with throw-away plastics comes with a high environmental price.
“But simply telling people to use less single-use plastic is not enough – we need to provide convenient alternatives to help people to do so.
“That’s why we’re proud to support the roll-out of refill stations across Wales and why we want to become the first Refill Nation in the world. I’m delighted with the progress made in the first year and the overwhelming response of businesses wanting to sign up.
“I’d like to see refilling water become the new social norm – helping people to save money and keeping us healthy, as well as saving the environment.”
Spencer Birns, Commercial Director at Cardiff Airport, said: “Refill Wales has offered us invaluable guidance as we’ve explored the options available and the best locations for customers to be able to fill their own water containers before and after travelling.
“We are committed to delivering the best possible experience for our customers, and recognise that our customers are becoming more and more aware of plastic use. We absolutely support the work of Refill Wales and are glad to be one of their featured locations.”
Hannah Osman, Refill Wales Coordinator, said: “We’re so excited that Cardiff Airport is joining the Refill movement and making a real difference by reducing reliance on single-use plastics. Every time we refill a re-usable bottle we save our own money and the planet’s resources, and all those individual refills add up to a huge impact. It’s great to see so many local businesses supporting Refill Wales by signing up to provide free refills.”
