That is a rare one these days.

Watched it depart on FR24 and also seen some pictures of it at BHX. Not many 200s around anymore and the ones that are don’t visit the UK that often. Must have been a treat for the spotters

I can make a guess and it is a guess.

When Ryanair set up their Malta Air operation they unsurprisingly received very favourable terms from the Malta government this much was widely reported in the aviation press at the time.

So my guess is Ryanair are using Maltese registered aircraft and crew to operate infill routes as in yesterdays case BGY-BHX-BGY as the last trip of the day all down to lower operating costs than say using a BHX aircraft. Either way you can bet its down to cost.
Just a theory any other ideas anyone ?

Ryanair as we all know make much use of away based aircraft on many routes across their network to good effect and Malta is possibly its lowest cost base.

Ryanair are very unpredictable, however a lot of Italian routes are done on Maltese aircraft and as far as I can see are interchangable with mainline as are
the Buzz machines., as I am Manchester Based we get a vast number of all of them except less of the MAX and virtually no EI reg MAX with only ones that do not interchange being the UK ones which were meant for non EU routes but even then they do operate EU routes. So all in all I expect anything from anywhere just a shame they are dropping Malta and Buzz coulours. Just enjoy what you get as it makes you look at Ryanair

The heavy freighters (A330, B777, B747) that BHX has been handling recently, seem to have suddenly gone very quiet this week.

A few weather cancellations today including so far Aer Lingus one to Dublin, KLM one to Amsterdam and Lufthansa one flight each to Frankfurt and Munich, also EasyJet one Geneva flight plus Amsterdam cancelled.

It is set to be a chaotic day all round, especially across the south and central areas. London looks like a particularly bad area later.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot, lot more cancellations than that. The MET Office have extended their 'RED' weather warning to include London and the East of England (meaning winds of up to 90mph and a risk to life). Birmingham and the West Midlands remain an 'AMBER' alert (which is bad enough).

BHX,s poorly orientated runway does not help in these sort of situation.

Sorry, I wasn't intending to belittle what you said.

As you say, BHX's runway alignment does not favour these conditions, giving pretty much a crosswind. As such, I think that 'diverts in' are unlikely and just getting BHX's flights in will be a challenge.

Given the prevailing wind direction in the UK, and most other airports runway orientation, I sometimes wonder why they didn't develop the old crosswind runway into the main runway and close 15/33. Obviously the railway would have stopped any extension to the east, but was there anything to the west that would have stopped it?

Something that I have often thought about. Obviously the railway line would have been a problem at one end of 06/24, but the other end may well have been hemmed in by the A45. Was it therefore cheaper and easier to lengthen 15/33? For the number of occasions when strong crosswinds cause a problem, the development of 15/33 was probably the logical choice.

Yes that's correct the high ground is Elmdon Park I lived by it as a child no way could the runway have been extended in that direction, the whole airport is these days relatively constrained in terms of space building the NEC hemmed it in while bringing in many international travellers at the same time.

BHX really could (should) have been a major freight location just like East Mids but they have the space and location while we have only the location.
