This year's final was due to be played in Istanbul on 29 May. The finalists are Chelsea and Manchester City but, as Turkey is on the UK Government's 'red list' as far as England is concerned, fans would have to quarantine on their return. UEFA had been hoping to allow 4,000 fans from both sides to watch the match had it been held in Istanbul. There could also be problems for international players with the European Championship beginning in June.

It's bad luck again for Istanbul because last year's final was moved from there to Lisbon following the virus outbreak.

It looked as though this year's final would be switched to Wembley, although that would mean moving the EFL Championship final scheduled for the same day.

However, UEFA has been unable to secure waivers from the UK Government which would allow the media, sponsors and guests to enter England without having to quarantine, despite having secured such an agreement for the European Championship (the delayed Euro 2020) being held across Europe between 11 June and 11 July, with Wembley hosting eight matches including the semi-finals and final.

If agreement cannot be reached between UEFA and the UK Government over Wembley it looks as though this year's final will be switched to Portugal, as last year's was, although currently British tourists are not allowed to enter Portugal, albeit that situation is expected to change very soon.

It is typically British, do things our way or not at all. Play the game behind closed doors in Turkey as planned, it is standard procedure by now so no loss to fans as it is likely to be televised. No doubt a COBRA meeting is necessary to discuss matters of a sports nature!

Football (as all sport), is ultimately for the fans. They, after all are the ones who pay the players wages and keep the larger clubs in high profit (advertisers would drop them like a hot brick if the fans didn't watch). So to deny fans the opportunity to watch their team in a major final because of where it was decided to hold that final is wrong. Let the final be moved to a venue where the fans can attend and enjoy the day. In this case, two English clubs are involved, so it only makes sense to hold the final in England where an excellent vaccination program appears to have the virus under control.
Let the fans have their day!

Kevin

So if two Spanish teams make final, in Tashkent for example, so we campaign for the game be moved to Madrid? Once a precedent is set, there will be no end to it. The teams knew the venue at start of competition and fans were medically excluded but because virus is on the wane we change the rules of the contest to meet fan demand?

No, order must be preserved. The game is televised and travel expenses are negated so let it proceed as is! Fans will have their game again in good time and in safety.

Sorry JENNY JET but I couldn't disagree more.

1. The match in Turkey is cancelled by UEFA and they are logically looking to play the game firstly in England for obvious reason or secondly in Portugal as its also considered a safe country in terms of conavirous.

2. The government and UEFA have held discussions and the only real sticking points seem to be the government rules say capacity should be a capacity of 20,000 while UEFA wants I think22,500 (25% capacity) which should not be above the whit of mankind to sort out but the real problem is UEFA insists on having 1,000 representatives, officials and VIPs etc including red band countries allowed in without having to conform to testing and isolation rules which in my view government is perfectly correct. I do not consider this to be doing things our way or not at all all but being sensible and pragmatic to allow fans to enjoy the game in safety.

3. As Kevin says football and all other sports for that matter its about the supporters who pay the piper but we don't get to call the tune and frankly I find it ridiculous that the likes of UEFA find it necessary to decide venues so far in advance, they have just confirmed the 2025 final is in Munich when they are just showing they can arrange the location of the final can be arranged in the space of a few weeks in the middle of a pandemic.

FIFA are even worse but thats another story.

Finally on a lighter note JENNY great picture of Peggy looks similar to our dog who's name I dare not mention as it was given to her by the RSPCA named after a Disney character.

Peggy thanks you Scottie Dog. As to football venues, I agree there is no logic within the governing bodies but I cannot think of a way round the need for advance planning since the host stadia have many calls upon their facilities and the circus surrounding the event.

Given the fact Man Utd fans seem to be protesting and wanting to course trouble (and quite right too) would it not be beneficial to move it onto neutral ground?

I'm with Jenny. It almost felt smug Grant Tw!t Shapps to come out and be like "yes you cannot go there but we'll happily have it" - on that basis alone it should not be given to the UK. The arrogance from the government is astounding and laughable. And based on that I really do hope UEFA put it in Lisbon.

There is no honour left in our political classes, Starmer losing it because he lost a few councils, Cameron with his activities with Ministers and Civil Servants, Johnson and his living arrangements and schnapps being typically himself, I feel vindicated in withdrawing from participating in Elections. The law requires my registration but not to vote. I am losing faith in politics.

Not sure what Manchester United have particularly got to do with it but so far as Grant Shapps is concerned I find it difficult to disagree the bloke's on a different planet to put it politely.

The fans have been protesting haven't they. Outside the Stadium in fact got the Liverpool game called off (good on them was meant at protesting against the corporate elite who want to take them into a European Super League). Surely it is safer to put it in Lisbon to prevent that happening here in the UK.

Coupled with the fact that Portugal flight prices will have already sky rocketed due to the Green List announcement. Add in a couple thousand searches for further flights to Porto, Lisbon and Faro for fans and not many people will travel. Or shouldn't anyway in my theory.

Oh I'm done with been polite. He has absolutely no clue how the transport and travel industry work at all.

The fans will travel, they always do the two clubs and airlines will put on charters.

UEFA made the decision to take this year's final away from Turkey because of the high infection rate there. Given that there are two English clubs in the final the obvious solution was to play the match in England, but the red list got in the way and the UK Government won't allow an exemption as they are for the European Championship matches at Wembley in June and July.

Had the final remained in Istanbul players would have had to quarantine for ten days in a managed quarantine hotel on their return to England which would have interfered with the build-up to the European Championship competition, and it would not just have involved the English international players with Chelsea and Manchester City.

There is a precedent from last year when the 2020 European Champions League Final was moved from Istanbul to Portugal because of a high infection rate in Turkey and across much of Europe. In fact, the final eight matches in that tournament were moved to Lisbon and played as single-match knockout ties at two stadiums in the city. Then finalists in 2020 were Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich.

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
