It's been a while since I had chance to look at the CAA passenger figures for EMA. I was surprised to see such a large percentage fall at the airport.

In December a total of 199,683 passengers passed through the doors, -24.2% on December figures for the previous year.

Rolling year passenger numbers and for the calendar year of 2010 stand at 4,110,581 down -11.7% on the previous year.

When you consider that EMA was seeing over 5.7 mppa during 2008 its fall in passenger numbers (nearly 30% down from its highest point to today's level) has been as spectacular as the likes of Cardiff and Exeter in percentage terms, yet it doesn't seem to attract the same sort of adverse publicity as Cardiff especially seems to get.

[textarea]East Midlands Airport targets 2% growth

East Midlands Airport is aiming to return to growth over the next year, managing director Brad Miller has told Insider. Following a ‘challenging’ 12 months, during which the airport battled the Icelandic ash cloud, a bomb scare and extreme December weather conditions, Mr Miller said the airport is ‘looking ahead’ to a year in which he aims to increase passenger numbers by up to 2 percent.

Mr Miller, who took up the post of managing director in October last year, said the 'flailing economy' and the Government’s spending review has aversely affected trade, but that he intends to return to growth by putting some 'romance' back in to flying, making sure passengers feel 'special'.

The airport was planning to increase the number of flights and destinations it offers passengers throughout the busy summer period. He said: ‘Jet2 will increase the number of flights it offers and will begin flying to Ibiza in the summer.'

Passenger numbers at East Midlands Airport seem to be in freefall. Are there any local factors causing this terminal decline?

[textarea]Passenger numbers drop at East Midlands Airport

Passenger figures and profits dropped at East Midlands Airport in the past year as the recession hit travellers, the airport's annual report says.

The airport had 400,000 fewer passengers from April 2010 to April 2011 with 4.1 million people flying from the regional hub.

Manchester Airports Group, which runs the airport, said the Icelandic volcanic ash crisis also hit profits.

The airport saw profits drop by £2.6m to £7.1m in the 2010-11 period.

Geographically speaking you would think East Midlands airport should be handling many more passengers than it currently does. With the conurbations of Derby, Nottingham and Leicester nearby and with is much sort-after location next to the UK's main motorway with other major cities well within reach of the airport. You would think the airport would be handling upwards of 7 or 8 million passengers per annum.

[textarea]East Midlands Airport has had its busiest summer since 2008

East Midlands Airport has today revealed it saw its busiest summer since 2008 and is expecting this trend to continue.

Almost three million passengers travelled between May and October, an increase of 10 per cent compared to the same period last year.

August was the busiest month, with passenger figures reaching almost 600,000, 13 per cent higher than August 2012.

EMA back on the up and with 2014 looking like another one for grown I expect the airport to overtake NCL next year too....

Good to hear most of the regionals getting back to how they should be.

EMA saw 513,645 passengers use the terminal in June, which was actually a 1.6 percent decrease from May.

Overall passenger figures still look healthy with the rolling total being 4,576,019 passengers, a 4 percent increase on the previous year.

That's quite a drop, are MAG taking their eye off the ball or are they really pushing MAN & STN.

It was posted on the BHX thread that EMA pax numbers lowest since June 1965. Surely April & May would have been lower than June!

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
