Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

I'm with White Heather & TheLocalYokel on this too. I can understand LBAspotters concerns but the discussion has stayed focused on the topic of Diversions, Delays & Cancellations to or from DSA, paying particular attention to the airports irresponsible attitude towards diversions from neighbouring airports, which is unnecessary. I do however understand that there is a thin line to draw and I have been monitoring the thread carefully.

One of the main reasons why I reintroduced the guest post facility was so that either members or non members could make anonymous posts about issues that they felt more strongly about. So long as the forum rules are adhered to I don't think there is a problem. **You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-oriented or any other material that may violate any applicable laws.** And just to reiterate, if people would like to add an alternative slant to the discussion they are more than welcome and that applies to anything positive towards the DSA airport as well.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

I've certainly stirred things up! I'm all for free speech but as it has been said, DSA should not have been allowed. It was, so let good commercial practices decide which way things will go.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

Seasider,

I agree.

Despite my earlier post in this thread saying I would want flights from the most convenient airport to me (I imagine most people would have similar views regarding their own area provided fares were not extortionate) I fully understand that in general market forces will prevail.

That's why I am completely against such things as route development funds, and public service obligation and other financial assistance to airports or airlines. Such funding can skew things artificially to the detriment of other airports and airlines that are making their way satisfactorily without recourse to the public purse.

Yes Seasider, it has become an interesting discussion, which is, after all, what Forums are all about. Discussions include opposite opinions, and provided they are put forward in accordance with the forum rules (which they were) then there is no harm in expressing an opinion, whether negative or positive. As you have stated, let commercial practices determine how well DSA does in the future, and how it competes and compares with LBA (and HUY for that matter). The problem is that because DSA are losing the battle at the moment based on commercial practices, they have started to take any opportunity to try and undermine LBA, not by making correct factual statements, but by twisting things round to suit themselves. That is not an acceptable commercial practice. Nobody sees LBA or HUY management gloating about picking up DSA diverts (although with so few flights at present there is little to pick up).

DSA should concentrate on marketing the airport to secure airline operators and dump the spin that they so obviously try putting on things.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

A person i talk to at the airport, whom i would consider as impartial considering they loathe commercial aviation at HUY, said that Peel only opened DSA to hit MAG with a big stick. He said that it has backfired, with the promise of LPL type growth diminishing. t would suggest to me that their commercial practices (from that point of view) are not so good their end. Its almost obnoxious and will be clearly seen through by any aviation business. I would say that it looks unprofessional.

You must remember that the average person who doesnt even have a passing interest in aviation will believe the spin. They do still believe that DSA has one of the ongest runways in Europe and that eventualy long-haul will start from there.

I also disagree with Yorkshire backward offering subsidies for flights, the FlyBe BHD route from Doncaster was one such service.

I would question the long-term viability of crews being held in the hotel overnight for the EZY routes, at a cost to Peel. The cynic in me says that this is a stunt to get people interested in the 49% share thats up for sale.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

Due to Ice on the runway last nights Wizz Air, Airbus A320, HA-LPH diverted to Leeds/Bradford from Doncaster-Sheffield. The flight was operating the WZZ511W service from Poznan.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

KLM Amsterdam to Leeds service has diverted into Doncaster due fog at Leeds

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

going to be any further diversions due to the fog at lba?

Perhaps if visibility worsens we could see a couple of Jet2 aicraft, though they prefer MAN & sometimes NCL as a divert option. We won't normally see any FR's either as they have better landing capabilities unless it goes well below minimum visibility and they will usually choose EMA as their divert airport.

Having said that though, BHX is currently closed due to unfortunate circumstances, so other airports will most likely be getting full already with the diverted aircraft from there.

Dont think they be any more flights losses at LBA this evening as things have started to improve a little and everything has started to get in again

The visibility @ 22:25hrs is now greater than 1,500 meters RVR, and the clouds are broken at 200ft with runway 14 in use.

So just the KLM for DSA today.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

I guess the weather is pretty much the same at DSA as it is at LBA tonight. Has everything managed to get back in this evening.

TOM653 diverted to EMA around 23:00 due to heavy snow.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

According to BBC news DSA is Snow Closed.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

This sounds like another of those occasions like last winter, when they took the 'executive decision' that clearing the runway was not financially viable given the fact that they had only a handful of flights. Presumably they know that as fast as they clear the runway, it is likely to get snowed on again before the next flight arrives. I can't help thinking airlines such as Wizz and Thomsons won't be impressed though when other airports in the vicinity are open again.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

To be fair London Gatwick is still closed and they've had far less snow than Doncaster and other northern airports. I had to laugh yesterday. A BBC reporter was saying how bad the snow was at Gatwick and that "the snow was still coming down heavily". It was hardly even a flurry and the roads looked virtually clear.

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

I don't honestly think though that DSA is closed because of the amount of snow. They did this last year, and all flights are cancelled at Durham Tees Valley too - same owners, same MD. Surely not a co-incidence. There is a TOM flight due to DSA tonight from Sharm el Sheikh. I wonder if it will go to MAN or come to LBA?

Re: Diversions, Delays & Cancellations

Looking at the DSA web site, the flight on Friday to Lapland is either cancelled or flying from another airport, feel sorry for the kids.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
