Discussions ongoing with 'several carriers'.

Mr Barton told BirminghamLive: “Ed Bastian is absolutely correct in identifying the strong market and appetite for US connectivity out of BHX.

"Data suggests some 45,000 passengers every week are traveling to the Americas, via other airports which is not only an unnecessary inconvenience for passengers, but a missed economic benefit for our region.

Obviously not directly affecting BHX but according to simpleflying.com the Icelandic airline Play are stopping all US flights
BHX were pretty close I think to getting Play before they announced LPL
It Just goes to show how the US travel market is struggling

Well i think Play is pulling out of all connecting traffic and even pulling out of Northern European routes with a focus on leisure travel. i suspect routes such as LPL, DUB, STN are all at risk atm

Nice to see United returning to Glasgow for next summer.

Distance between Edinburgh and Glasgow is 46 miles so proof something that close can work whereas BHX cannot get a flight because supposedly we are to close to the catchment of Manchester (86 miles from Brum) and Heathrow (115 miles)

And I'm sorry, if its Americans flying in for the capital of Scotland, they going to go to Edinburgh.

But hey... 27 Easyjet, Ryanair and Jet2 flights to Spain a day next year eh... Wayhey! Great...

It stinks quite frankly. Just my opinion. We've all got them.

I’m sure GLA is also going to be mostly inbound tourism. Edinburgh isn’t the only place American tourists want to see when travelling to Scotland. There’s the Highlands, Loch Ness, etc.

I think if they could have just added more flights to EDI instead of starting GLA, they would have done so. That’s what US airlines have done in the past. But I wouldn’t be surprised if EDI has run out of space for TATL flights in the morning, the number of TATL flights they already have is staggering. I got the impression when I last travelled through EDI that it was overcrowded and at the limits of its capacity.

Sums up bhx westbound ambition
As a further thought, GLA and EDI don’t have to compete with
LHR being down the road. London and Scotland are quite different tourist markets. Even if BHX managed to tap into the London tourist market, we’d face the possibility of an airline moving its flights to LHR as soon as a slot opens up. LGW has lost multiple long haul airlines to LHR this way.

BHX I would say is more comparable to MAN in terms of the kind of passengers that would use USA flights. We need to rely more on business traffic or UK tourists going to the US, but both markets are really weak right now and that’s not necessarily the fault of BHX.

Maybe they've analysed the data from their flights into EDI and see enough Glasgow postcodes to try a seasonal service?

Last flight to Florida next week leaving no flights at all to the USA or Canada from Birmingham for the first time that I can remember :(

That would suggest it is focused on GLA originating passengers. I very much doubt it will be. I imagine it is for golf and tours of the Highlands. It would be interesting to know what are the ties between these services and US tour companies.

don't forget the new United flight to Glasgow is on the 737 Max, maybe they are testing the water, see if the Max is suitable, and if it is, maybe a few more UK airports might get served in the future?

I did think that actually.

We've got Strafford and Shakespeare.
Peaky Blinders.
More canals than Venice.
Cadbury.
The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

LHR has around 124 return flights a day to the USA to 31 destinations with 22 flights to New York daily alone.

It is the domoniment European airport to the US and just shows with being 2hrs by road away BHX is up against.

I'm afraid the typical American traveller to the UK only thinks Big Ben , Harrods and Royal Family for London, and Edinburgh Castle and Loch Ness for Edinburgh. The culture, history and scenery between those two places simply does not exist for them at all. Because the precious types in South East England are seemingly incapable of waiting more than 2 hours to another service to New York, Chicago, Boston etc it means those routes end up with a shed load of cheap seats which attract all the wannabe passengers that BHX and MAN would crave going the other way.

Even having demonstrative profitable UK sales-led operations out of MAN cuts no muster with the powers that be in the boardroom of US majors. I daresay BHX operation focused on UK sales would also profitable but for whatever reason, it appears our collective routes need to be able generate double what LHR operations do before a US airline will look at anywhere other than LHR/LGW/EDI (and the GLA route is more than likely due to constraints at EDI)

Hi there all, I'm 100% fully supportive of getting back direct flights from Birmingham Airport to the USA, but which airline will take the risk I don't know. Either EasyJet, Emirates or TUI, probably with an a321 long range neo, other than that, no idea. Also depends on what Birmingham airport management are prepared to offer.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
