As I expected and predicted, phase 2 of the LBA ReGen project has been awarded to Farrans Construction, the current contractor for phase 1 . Obviously won by tender but absolutely makes sense given the complexities that would occur with two main contractors on site during the forthcoming overlap between completion of phase 1 and commencement of phase 2. Using Farrans means a seamless transition.

Makes sense to use an existing relationship from a supplier management perspective- guess things have gone well in respect of Farrans performance on the first phase!
Looking good for LBA and even WYCA are now starting to slowly mobilise on the station at last!

Yes this makes perfect sense to me. Workers already on site and presumably they will use the existing work compound and batching plant.

Why are members getting "het up" about the appearance of the Terminal Extension?
They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, hence the different opinions, but the main criteria is "does it give the passenger a better experience in using the airport"
We only have to wait a few more months before we find the answer to that one.

'Function over Form' as they say.

Meanwhile the extension in person looks so cheap and awful.
You need to go back through the thousands of posts and see how we've come to this point.

To summerise a terminal extension was planned (the one currently being built) but the airport halted the building of the extension originally as they decided it wasn't going to offer what a new terminal building would.

A brand new terminal was planned, released for public consultation and then the plans were submitted for review by the council. After many months of deliberation the Labour majority lead Leeds City Council Plans Panel passed the plans for the new terminal.

Shortly afterwards the Conservative MP and then Home Secretary called in the plans for further examination after being nobbled by our estute Labour MPs. After holding onto the plans for a ridiculous length of time the airport decided it would return to the original plans so it would enable the work to commence immediately.

And here we are today. So please, there is really no point of criticising the aesthetics of the building extension. It isn't what anybody wanted but we have to accept it.

It was supposedly designed along similar lines to Glasgow Airport. Never been myself so I wouldnt know but presumably that looks cheap and nasty too?

Personally, in comparison to the mish- mash of buildings making up the existing terminal, it looks fine. It's a regular shape (at last) so presents far better usable space than LBA is used to. I genuinely believe it enables a total transformation of the customer experience at LBA

Glasgow terminal is fairly nondescript at the front, just white cladding, but the atrium on the inside isn’t bad. It’s ages ago since I used it, but I thought it was ok, and I suppose that’s the point - most people will come away thinking it’s ok if you get your bags quick, or get through check-in and security quickly. So, I reckon with the new extension, most people will be reasonably happy with LBA.

I get all the "be grateful we're getting anything at all" type posts and I'm happy for the capacity improvements etc, but how hard would it have been to have just some nice cladding and couple of windows facing out?!

Also whilst not finished, the huge horizontal "vent feature" along the front is shown as black in the renders but in person it's grey so even that small piece of "flair" is missing (unless added later)

As White Heather has already said, any alterations would require a further planning application. With everything that has gone on there isn't currently any desire to go through the planning process all over again where LCC could impose additional restrictions etc.

Sorry yes but why design it so badly in the original plans?!
There are windows along the entire length of the airside and Eastern elevations and from what I can see, the North elevation too, all at 2nd floor level, which is the departures area. If there aren't any on the lower floor, there'll be a good reason and are windows needed in the arrivals area? I haven't come across many airports with windows in baggage reclaim or immigration. From an outbound passenger perspective, they'll be surrounded by windows!

Its worth remembering that the exterior was designed to a budget available at that time. 'Nice cladding' is subjective, but what you think is nice might be twice the cost. And a lot of nice cladding available in 2017 was outlawed that year after the tragic Grenfell fire. Windows, incidentally, being double glazed, are a lot more expensive to install than cladded walls and greatly increase maintenance costs too, so you don't put them in just for aesthetics.

Is the protective covering off the cladding? Only asking, as there was a coop built near me and it had some cladding that looked rough as, but then before opening it had some film peeled off each piece, and it looked much better. The cladding also looked darker as the film wasn’t clear.
Probably not at this stage. They've only just installed the windows. Any protection film would usually be taken off when all construction is completed

So that may explain the colour difference(looking more grey than black at the base)? Perhaps the lower piece will appear darker once the protective covers are removed. Either way, I’m confident that as it nears completion it will look ok.
Having looked at the publicity pictures, it looks dark grey to me. Highly doubt it will be black.

I very much doubt if the average passenger even notices the exterior of an airport. They’re more concerned about having a smooth, pleasant passage through the airport before boarding their flight. Hopefully the new extension will give them that. After all they’ll spend far more time inside the terminal than out

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
