You are very correct there sherburn, every major event thats occured over the last few years inc whats happening in the middle east atm is all connected and part of the reset as some call it. Im very concerned with current events and the effects it could have! Turning a blind eye to it will not help.

Yesterday's news of the 100million investment into LBA is great news for the airport, 100million is a big deal and certainly more than i expected! The images released showing the terminal extension plus the interior images look very smart indeed, a bright, spacious and welcoming looking terminal. Im certainly looking forward to the work commencing and feel this will be the start of great things happening at LBA, a turning point perhaps!
What we must remember as well is that the work will be undertaken in 3 phases spanning right through to completion in 2026 so although they may be some disruption to passengers for us here on F4A its going to be a very exciting 2 years seeing our airport finally expand, modernise with proper infrastructure put in place. Im also looking forward to the apron expansion although can someone on here just clarify how much expansion and extra parking stands are included in the phase 3 plans?

Effectively Phase 3 could include just 2 or 3 stands, or more than that, up to the numbers outlined in the Airport Development plan. LBA have said they will be built after the terminal is completed in accordance with anticipated demand, meaning that phase 3 could stretch from 2026 through to around 2030 with stands being built a few at a time or all at once, according to demand. If, for example easyJet signed a deal to base 4 aircraft, then at least 4 additional stands would be needed to accommodate them. The money is secured for them within the quoted £100m.
 
According to an article in the New Civil Engineer, Phase 1 INCLUDES the construction of a number of new aircraft stands. If that is correct, and not an error by the writer, then it would not only suggest a change of plan (stands were previously indicated as phase 3, after completion of the terminal), but also suggests that airport management have accepted the need to accelerate construction . That, in turn, may suggest something that has brought about that change, such as an airline willing to base at LBA once the terminal is constructed.

It may mean nothing at all except an acceptance that at times, Saturday afternoons in particular, more stands are already needed. Or the writer of the article might have his/her wires crossed.

Time will tell .
 
It seems strange that a re-vamp/extension is costing £150m and a completely new eco airport was only going to cost £150m.
Have you seen how costs have increased? Especially in the construction industry? According to VH the new terminal, post Covid,.with today's current inflation, would have ended up costing £250m minimum. The previous £25m for the extension and another £25m for the refurbishment were based on 2018 prices. That's 5 years ago. 5 years of rampant inflation to add on,.plus the fact they have revised the interior and enhanced what's going in,.and there's also the aircraft stands now, which were not included previously.
 
The price tag of a the canned new terminal and associated works was £150m During the communication at the consultative committee meeting the figure quoted was actually £90m for the works so I don't know if £10m has been added for the aircraft parking stands or if there's mix up somewhere.

It could be that they have borrowed an extra £10m to cover inflation (known in the industry as contingencies) and unexpected additional works costs (variations) which often occur on projects of this size.

Yes the original new terminal scheme was £150m but now would be around £250m, such have been the cost increases over the last few years. Basically, as a result if Covid, it's unaffordable for LBA at this time and based on current income. I suspect that is a key reason why it was canned. The longer the Government took to make a decision, the higher the cost was going. Once it went beyond what was affordable,.the entire scheme was binned.
 
Would make sense to start on site shorty, As looking at the winter 2023/24 timetable things really start to quieten down flights wise after after this weekend meaning less passengers in the terminal and a lot less cars in the car parks.
The car park where this extension is to be built is used by staff. How much disruption it will cause the public when work starts will depend on how big the works compound is and whether or not the contractors can remain exclusively within it.

However, there's bound to be deliveries and some pretty big trucks going in and out so it'll be interesting to see how they access the area and get out again without causing chaos in the process.

I would expect the majority of the steel works to be compete before the summer season begins next year. This will keep the amount of large low loaders to a minimum during busier times.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
