Volcanic Ash Disruptions: Over 1,350 Flights Impacted Across the Mediterranean (Mount Etna Eruption)

The ongoing eruption of Mount Etna has caused widespread disruption across the Mediterranean this week, with over 1,350 flights cancelled, delayed, or rerouted. Because individual flight tracking spans hundreds of daily regional services, aviation authorities have grouped the operational impact by key airport hubs and heavily affected routes.

The primary flight disruptions across major European airlines including Ryanair, Jet2, easyJet, British Airways, Wizz Air, and KM Malta Airlines are broken down below:

1. Malta International Airport (MLA) Disruptions

The volcanic ash cloud drifted south directly into the Maltese flight path, triggering dozens of cancellations and diversions during a peak summer holiday week:

  • Jet2: Services to and from Leeds Bradford were diverted to Rome, while Edinburgh flights suffered mid-week cancellations.
  • KM Malta Airlines / SWISS: Multiple services operating between Malta and Zurich were cancelled.
  • Transavia: Inbound services arriving from Paris Orly were cancelled.
  • Ryanair: Experienced severe delays and route adjustments across its UK network, including flights to Birmingham.
  • Other Affected Routes: Scheduled flights between Malta and both Amsterdam and New York (JFK) faced severe routing alterations or outright cancellations.

2. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) – The Epicentre

As Sicily’s primary airport located closest to Mount Etna, Catania has faced total, rolling airspace closures over several days. Over 700 flights have been cancelled at this hub alone:

  • Ryanair: Multiple daily flights were cancelled or forced to divert, including inbound services from London Stansted.
  • easyJet: Cancellations heavily impacted UK holidaymakers, specifically grounding routes to London Gatwick, London Luton, and Bristol.
  • British Airways: Multiple services from London Gatwick were completely scrapped.
  • Wizz Air & ITA Airways: Dozens of domestic Italian routes and wider European connections were entirely suspended.

UPDATE: Catania Operations Resuming as Etna Alert Downgraded

Following the extensive disruptions over the past week, there is finally some positive movement regarding flight operations in the region.

1. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) – Reopening Underway

  • Airspace Reopened: Following an improvement in volcanic conditions and the downgrade of Mount Etna's aviation alert level from RED to ORANGE, local authorities have reopened restricted sectors C1 and B3.
  • Flight Resumptions: Catania Airport officially restarted arriving and departing flights as of 14:00 local time yesterday (15th August).
  • Ongoing Knock-On Delays: While aircraft are moving again, airlines are working through massive backlogs. Passengers are still being strongly advised to verify their flight status before travelling to the airport, as rolling aircraft/crew displacement is causing lingering delays and selected cancellations.

2. Malta International Airport (MLA) & Wider Region

  • Airspace Clearing: As the ash cloud begins to dissipate and shift, flight paths across the central Mediterranean and around Malta are largely returning to normal routing.
  • Schedule Recovery: Carriers including Jet2, Ryanair, and KM Malta Airlines are in the process of positioning aircraft back to their intended bases following the multi-day diversions (such as Jet2's earlier LBA divert to Rome).

Heads Up!

For some weird reason, my days off work tend to involve being out of my flat by 5am and not getting back until 10pm. Back to work and the regular "fix" of 7.40am to 7.15pm hours
