Work to extend the main runway by 600m began in 1982, and was completed by 1984. The work included rerouting the A658 Bradford to Harrogate road through a tunnel. At the same time, a significant terminal extension was added housing a new check-in area and new departure facilities.
Wardair of Canada was the first airline to operate regular transatlantic flight. The airline operated a weekly service to Toronto Pearson International Airport using a Boeing 747 aircraft.

In 1986, an Air France Concorde visited Leeds Bradford for the first time. It was estimated that over 60,000 people visited viewpoints around the airport to see it land.
In 1987, the airport became a limited company. The airport was shared between five West Yorkshire councils of Leeds (40%), Bradford (40%) and Wakefield, Calderdale and Kirklees (which shared the remaining 20%).
The airport has gone from strength to strength and has doubled the passengers from around 1.5 million to 3 million within the last 3 years.
In October 2006 councils announced plans to privatise the airport.
On April 4, 2007 Leeds city council which was handling the sale on behalf of all 5 councils announced that Bridgepoint Capital had been selected as the preferred bidder. The sale was completed on May 3, 2007 when Bridgepoint was confirmed as the buyer of the airport which was sold for £145.5 million.
Bridgepoint immediately announced a £70 million worth of capital expenditure, to improve passenger and retail infrastructure. The company has stated that it wants to more than double the number of passengers to around 7 million per Annam and adding up to 20 new scheduled destinations, by 2015.
Getting to Leeds Bradford Airport is relatively easy. The airport is situated in the North West of Leeds in Yeadon.
