Some very bad figures on just about every destination. Did we have many diversions away for fog and wind in January. I know the snow did'nt come until Feb.

It's not looking great, but given the loss of Cruise Charters and the late start of normal Jet2/Thomas Cook ops as well as the loss of the Austrian/Lauda Innsbruck service, it's easy to see where the 12.4% of passengers are.

I hear its not been the best winter on the slopes either, so late booking skiers may have been put off booking and skiing as well.

Atms down 18.4% so in that context the 12.4% reduction in passenger figures is not a bad result.

We need to bear in mind also that last winter LBA was protected from the drop in pax most other airports suffered as we had just got our first Ryanair winter base operation, plus a new Easyjet operation to Geneva. This year we don't have that protection and LBA is a vulnerable to the drop in passengers just as most other airports are. This winter has certainly been noticeably quieter, particulary Jet2 who at times have had very few flights compared to what they have done previously. However, the summer should see an increase, which should at least offset the losses in the winter and in all probability will result in an overall increase for the year. A 5% rise in summer is probably worth a lot more passengers than a 12% drop in the winter.

How does LBA's January figures compare to other airports of similar size, eg Bristol, Newcastle?

Bristol 318,416 -3.5%, atms - 9.6%, rolling 12-months 5,756,077 + 0.5%

Liverpool 295,209 - 4.5%, atms - 14.8%, rolling 12-months 5,232,773 + 4.7%

Belfast Int 255,024 +8.9%, atms + 10.4%, rolling 12-months 4,122,734 + 3.25%

Newcastle 226,419 -3.5%, atms -8.2%, rolling 12-months 4,328,141 -0.6%

Aberdeen 225,869 +13.6%, atms + 9.7%, rolling 12-months 3,109,549 + 11.8%

East Midlands yet to report.

February 2012

CAA stats show that LBA handled 145,987 passengers in February, up 0.9% on February 2011. Atms were down 10.3%.

Rolling 12-month total is 2,920,885 up 4.9% on a year ago.

Although there was an extra day this February (worth about 3.5% in passenger numbers) atms were down over 10% so this is a decent performance in my view.

It's good to see a moderate and small climb of passengers, even when ATM's were down that much!

Let's hope the 3Million mark will be reached soon!

The Airport MD stated last week that there were signs of a slight recovery in the aviation industry - but only slight - overall demand is still nothing special and the industry is still having a very hard time of it. However, it is perhaps the case that the slump has levelled out and hopefully this summer will see further year on year growth at LBA. There is every indication that the 3m passengers mark will be passed this year.

top 10 routes from LBA in 2011, and passengers carried on those routes:

AMS 233580
ALC 224811
AGP 223217
PMI 190989
DUB 177517
FAO 127954
BCN 94584
TFS 92277
CDG 77715
ACE 67486

It is sad to see CDG low down in the list and BRU not even mentioned. It looks as if it is going to be a "bucket & spade" airport.

I wouldn't call Amsterdam and Dublin 'Bucket & Spade' routes, but I know what you mean and how it's looking...

Until Air France/British Airways/Swiss/Lufthansa/Iberia show an interest in operating high frequency business flights, LBA and nearly other UK regional airport will stay a predominantly leisure based airport.

I guess that's partly because that the only CDG link we have is Jet2. No interlining, so it's only traffic to Paris, whereas AMS is Jet2/KLM to Amsterdam and the KLM interliners.

Don't get excited, the figures are late as usual. It seem as if the CAA always have a problem publishing the LBA figures for whatever reason?

With them figures just posted by empire how can't you get excited Aviador!

Month 189,399 +6.2% and Rolling Year 2,931,979 +4.8%

Surely LBA will hit the 3 Million mark this summer?

A massive jump compared to last year!

I suspect that the fact Easter was slightly earlier this year, many people, like my myself  , managed to creep into those figures departing right at the end of March for a quick break.

I don't know how effective the new Ryanair routes would have been starting a few days before April begun, but something worked!

Roll on 3Million!

Looks like the bubbly will already be on ice in anticipation for next months figures!?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
