I must say I am not surprised at this figure, but many of the 'holiday-makers' are extremely high-yielding, so coupled with the Business travel, BA is therefore a very business class heavy airline.

Gosh HS2 now that is introducing a new can of worms and yes if you can get to Manchester from Heathrow in less than 2 hours all well and good, but on a negative, it would of course be remiss not to suggest that in the other direction you could catch a flight from what will ultimately always be a fragmented service from Manchester versus the more consistent Heathrow offering.

On the Leeds forum people often say it's just as easy for someone from Leeds to use Manchester airport as opposed to Leeds Bradford. Manchester airport remains the main beneficiary in this instance. Similarly it has long been my belief that HS2 will be bad for both Leeds and Manchester and Manchester airport. It is inevitable that Heathrow and London in general will be the main beneficiary of reduced travel times to London, the capital city. IMHO.

I'd say if Heathrow still had a direct connection to HS2 then yes it would be the main beneficiary (in airport terms).

Manchester Airport on the other hand will have a HS2 station located at the airport. With HS2, one could get from to Manchester Airport from:

- Birmingham in 30 mins
- Crewe in 15 mins
- Edinburgh/Glasgow in 2 & 1/2 hours

Add in HS3, and Manchester airport will be connected to the other northern cities with reasonable travel times.

Competitively priced however, HS2 could give BA's shuttle service some decent competition from Manchester.

I don't agree with this.

Firstly, very few passengers use rail to get to airports, particularly ones more than a couple of hours drive away. If anything, the propensity of people to use rail is higher in London than outside.

Secondly, Heathrow is not on the HS2 route. It would require a change at Old Oak Common (with bags) and a 20 odd minute onward journey to whatever terminal.

Thirdly, it is unlikely that LHR will be given permission to add a third runway by the time HS2 is built.


A combination of HS2, HS3, and the TP tunnel should have a major impact on MAN.

Precisely why BA are rethinking their strategy.

Regarding the "mixed fleet" contracts - what constitutes a terrible London wage would not be a terrible wage in the north. If BA wish to remain "London Airways" they must pay the London wage for their staff.

Further up the article, when IAG's long-haul flights from BCN were discussed, LAX have announced the flights to BCN will be operating under the Vueling brand, presumably from A330s. Quite smart, in my opinion, with connections to just about everywhere from BCN. Whether this means, if long-haul was to be operated from MAN it would be lo-co or BA mainline remains to be seen - just thought I would share.

Reviewing what's due in today, noticed this:

Seems they've snook in extra 2 shuttle flights per week since 15th Jan operating on Tuesday and Sundays

SD noticed the month by month numbers on the shuttle had picked up for the first time in a few years. Perhaps this reflects this increase?

Nothing more than a couple of slot sitters necessary to comply with the 80% rule whilst pairing down a few seasonal long haulers through to March.

Along wth the rotating daily JFK cancellation through the timetable this time of year.

BA look like they will be setting up a STN type operation with Cityflyer down to operate the following destinations per our well-known source on another forum:

Alicante, Ibiza, London City, Mykonos, Malaga, Nice, and Palma

Inaugural BA Cityflyer arrival then will be on 18th May from LCY (not available for reservation) and then departing on their first revenue service from Manchester to Ibiza.

Last flight will be the positioning flight back to LCY on 1st October.
