As with the old tale about buses you wait a long time for one then two come along together.

Scottie Dog's excellent detailed analysis of the much delayed (often in the case of BRS) CAA January 2021 passenger figures shows that nearly 18,500 passengers used the airport in that month, down 96.5% on January 2020 with the rolling 12-month total at 1,676,000 down 81.3% on a year ago.

I can't remember this happening before but the CAA February 2021 passenger figures have also been published today.

They show that 4,182 passengers were handled in the month, down 99.3% on February 2020, with atms down 98.2%. The rolling 12-month figure was 1,120,345, down 87.6% on a year ago.

March 2021's 12-month rolling figure (12 months into the pandemic) is likely to be under 850,000. After that April and May might actually show a very tiny semblance of growth (blink and you'd miss it) given that those months in 2020 saw 357 and 774 passengers respectively.

CAA data for February is, as mentioned by TLY, also available and I have produced my now usual analysis.

Unfortunately there is little to it, however I keeps the numbers neat and tidy. March will be as gloomy, however from April - when we had total shutdowns - the situation will hopefully improve.

As at 9th May Bristol has still not submitted data for March to the CAA. We wait with 'baited breath' for the data

BRS has been one of the latecomers most months for the last couple of years. The next CAA refresh is due the week commencing 10 May (tomorrow) according to its website.

Must be a lot of passenger numbers to work through as stats are still not published, despite the CAA saying the next scheduled refresh would be during the week commencing 10 May. Not the most vital of tasks but it still smacks of inefficiency somewhere along the line. I had a boss once whose mantra was - 'attention to detail'. With the likes of Twitter and test messaging that is now an alien concept to many.

This is the note on the CAA website:

As of 29 April, the following airports are not yet available for reporting and therefore excluded: Belfast City (George Best), Bristol, Doncaster Sheffield, Oxford and Southend. The next scheduled refresh of airport publications will be week commencing 10 May 2021.

Yes, I take a look at the CAA's website on a daily basis and each day i give a big sigh and think "what the heck".

Out of interest we should have April's data by the end of this week - well hopefully we might.

CAA Stats March 2021

Finally published and show that 6,102 passengers were handled in the month, down 98% on March 2020. Rolling 12-month total was 829,000 down over 95% on a year ago although March 2020 was beginning to show the effects of Covid.

LHR had the largest 12-month rolling total at the end of March 2021 at 9.1 million, by coincidence exactly the same figure as the 12-month rolling total for BRS at the end of February 2020 before the pandemic interfered.

Further context puts BFS just behind BRS in the rolling 12-month stakes at 826,000 with GLA previously the next busiest but now 679,000. BHX is still the next busiest above BRS at 978,000.

Local airports to BRS are CWL (12-month rolling total of 48,000), EXT (28,000) and NQY (24,000).

Incidentally, April's CAA stats have been published today but as usual BRS is missing.

You just beat me to it TLY! I'll try to get my take on March's figures on the forum later this evening.

Just to add a bit to Scottie Dog's post, the monthly total of 12,888 passengers is the first monthly rise since February 2020. It's actually a ridiculous 3,510% rise on April 2020 but as the latter month featured only 357 passengers it doesn't really count for a lot in that sense.

The 12 month running total to the end of April this year is 842,000 and BRS has dropped to 9th position in the UK airport 'league table' having been overtaken by Belfast International.

As it's still a quiet time in aviation and one or two people might have a vague interest in the subject, this is the league table for the 12 months to the end of April, 2021.

Published for BRS at long last and show that 42,600 passengers were handled in the month, up 774% on May 2020. Rolling 12-month total is 884,000, up from 842,000 last month. These figures are still around the 12-monthly figure seen in 1991.

CAA Stats August 2021

BRS in the first batch of CAA stats for the first time in ages.

331,842 terminal passengers, up 21.4% on August 2020. Atms up 15.8%. Rolling 12-month total 1,086,200, down 76.5% on a year ago.

BRS's August 2021 passenger figure of 331,842 was 32.9% of the August 2019 figure of 1,009,498. The August 2020 figure was 27.1% of the August 2019 figure.

July 2021 was 18.8% of the July 2019 figure and July 2020 12.4% of July 2019.

Moving slowly in the right direction and the number of daily flights in August was approaching 50% of normal numbers for the time of year - September has seen more again, up to 60% of normal. Clearly the average loads overall were significantly lower than those of August 2019 which is a surprise to no-one.

With the 12-month rolling figure for August 2021 showing 1.086,000 there is much to be done before 2019's overall passenger number of 8.9 million comes into view.

Looking at some individual route passenger numbers for August 2021 as published this week by the CAA there are some encouraging comparisons with the passenger numbers for August 2019 in the Domestic section. These for example with the August 2021 number shown first followed by August 2019:

BFS 25,218 - 25,809
EDI 24,092 - 32,378
GLA 18,894 - 27,666
INV 8,059 - 9,459
NCL 8,495 - 17,124

ABZ was 3,951 in 2021 but 1,468 in 2019; however, easyJet operated in 2021 alongside Loganair the sole carrier in 2019
JER was 5,815 in 2021 but 3,766 in 2019; however, easyJet operated in 2021 alongside Blue Islands the sole carrier in 2019
GCI was 1,603 in 2021 against 2,608 in 2019 which might be a more accurate Channel Islands comparison
IOM was 1,872 in 2021 against 2,955 in 2019
MME a new route in 2021 was under 600

BFS, EDI and GLA saw fewer flights in 2021 than in 2019 which suggests the load factors were not a great deal different between these years.

International did not do quite as well on many routes though a combination of fewer flights and generally, although mot always, lower load factors.

Central and Eastern Europe did best with some routes in 2021 over 80% of 2019's load factors.

In terms of total passenger numbers on individual routes in this part of Europe, the number of flights (sometimes lower in 2021 than in 2019, occasionally higher such as Bucharest - 3,726 passengers in 2021 and 3,292 in 2019) have to be taken into account when assessing the complete picture.
