York airport scheme kicked out

CAMPAIGNERS, developers and economic leaders reacted with joy and despair today after a Government inspector threw out plans for a huge expansion of Elvington Airfield.

Residents, local politicians and City of York Council hailed the decision by Colin Tyrrell, saying the environmental damage caused by several thousand more flights a year would have been too severe.

But business bosses said it was bad news for York, and the site’s owners, Elvington Park Ltd (EPL), also condemned the decision, which followed a public inquiry between the council and EPL.

Chris Hudson, secretary of EPL, threatened to turn the runway back into farmland, saying the council had consistently thwarted its ideas.

He said: “We are extremely disappointed and cannot believe that, in this economic climate, a proposal that would have created extra jobs for York has been turned down.”

EPL wanted to build new hangars so it could increase the number of take-offs and landings from 1,550 a year to about 10,000. It argued its plans would meet a demand from the local business community and create 42 jobs.

Mr Hudson said: “We have had endless problems with the council and now, looking at it logically, the only alternative left is to recover all the stone and raw material from the airfield, remove it all completely, and return it to agricultural land.

“Everything we have done, the council has found a problem with.”

But Mr Tyrrell said there was “little persuasive evidence” that a lack of airport was harming York businesses, or would do so in future.

He also rejected EPL’s claim that the land was not in the green belt and said he was unconvinced that EPL would adequately protect the Lower Derwent Valley special protection area (SPA), a nationally-recognised area for birdlife.

Mike Slater, the council’s assistant planning director, welcomed the decision, adding: “The limited economic benefits of the proposal are outweighed by the substantial harm to the green belt, the countryside and also to the nature conservation interests in the Lower Derwent Valley SPA.”

Residents had voiced concerns about noise, traffic, and other environmental impacts of the development.

Elvington Parish Council chairman Ian Bailey said: “I am very pleased and relieved for the great many people who would have been affected.”

But Susie Cawood, York head of the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is disappointing news for the business community.”

She said the chamber supported Leeds Bradford Airport, but added: “There would have been a case to have a small airport at Elvington and it would have assisted business.”

She said transport was always a key issue for local firms and that York was losing out in some cases from poorer links than other cities.

I can understand their disappointment at this, and I am concerned at the threats made as it might put a stop to the air displays that moved there from Church Fenton - Yorkshire's only air display incidentally, although I believe it didn't even happen in 2009?

However, putting things in perspective, York is just about 25 miles from Leeds Bradford - the same distance as Sheffield is from Doncaster Sheffield Airport. If there were some decent transport links between York and Leeds Bradford Airport, I can't see the lack of an airport at Elvington impacting on York negatively. I would imagine that Elvington would have been used primarily by business aviation (small jets etc), but would that have made any real difference to York's business prospectives?

Now York Council have won this battle they should re-direct their energies into ensuring that the bus services to LBA are re-instated and give their backing to a train link to LBA also. A decent train link could bring York and LBA within 50 minutes of each other which is viewed as acceptable generally.

Galaxy why have you put that in the York Elvington thread may I ask? Yes it's a great idea but I can't see it ever happening.

It was because transport links to / from York was mentioned, feel free to delete it if it's too off-topic.

No it's fine, just wondered that's all. I've read the posts above and I guess it fit's in. It would be great to see something like that, perhaps with a link to LBA linking to that sort of network?

Your pictures don't work for me. It must have been a fantastic sight to see the aircraft landing at Elvington.

Visited elvington in the summer. Interesting but thought the aircraft in the museum are a bit tightly packed .

It's on my to do list. We were ment to visit last summer but we ended up going to the coast.

Did you manage any photos wolfheze?

Seem to remember i took one or two, nothing spectacular though. I will have look later.
Took a trip to skeggy on new years day and went past signposts to skellingthorpe, wickenby, syerston, woodhall spa, and spilsby. Am surprised there werent more collisions when the airfields in lincolnshire and yorkshire were often only a few miles apart.

Couple of photos. Not sure i would have been able to raise a smile under those circumstances.
Very brave men.

This is a list of old Yorkshire airfields but I don't know how compehensive it is as Yeadon now known as Leeds Bradford Airport isn't listed here.

You have missed Pollington (off A645 between Whitley Bridge and Goole) unless that is Snaith that you listed. I am from that area and it was always referred to as Pollington disused airfield.

How many of those were bomber command airfields? I was led to believe there were around 50 operational airfields in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Also went to Tockwith last year to check on a motorcycle restoration.
Quite an eerie place as a lot of the buildings remain. Was a heavy conversion unit so I would imagine a lot of inexperienced crews would have been lost training in clapped out aircraft

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
