There is no guarantee that BRS will have a new route(s). It might not and other bases might. That's assuming the post on another site about easyJet announcing new routes tomorrow is correct.

Definitely agree with that. Remember blue air etc. Let's just wait and see. Other rumours about the airline with a harp on the tail tomorrow too but again let's not get carried away

The Blue Air thing was bizarre. I still can't understand how the route with timings, days of operation and flight numbers was put into the airline's web booking engine only to be withdrawn within an hour or two.

I can only suppose the route had been worked up theoretically and someone pressed the web page button in error.

I've heard no rumours about Ryanair so that might be an interesting development, or might not.

I agree. I was expecting more sun routes already flown by other airlines.

Stockholm has been a route much wanted at BRS for many years. When SAS tried it for short summer seasons in 2007 and 2008 and again in 2014 and 2015 the loads were very good (monthly 88-90%) on the B737-600. The route was extensively advertised at each end as primarily for tourists then.

Each time the route only operated for eight weeks (2 x weekly) from June till August and it was axed after 2008 when SAS went into meltdown and axed nearly half its route network. I don't know why they didn't come back in summer 2016.

A regular service with easyJet ought to see some business travellers. A couple of years ago Ryanair suggested that Scandinavia was an area they were looking at from BRS and from some other airports. Stockholm is another capital city served from BRS. I've lost count - about 17 now? Perhaps a bit more if you count Edinburgh and Belfast.

Athens is an interesting one - another capital city. With no direct connectivity there I have a slight doubt about it, especially in winter, but there haven't been many duffers from BRS during easyJet's long association. They've usually got it right.

Athens starts from Oct 29. Not really a winter destination is it? I believe winters can be cold there.

Both will be very successful I think. Athens may surprise to be honest. Too hot in the summer but nice and cool to climb the acropolis in January. I be there this august myself and am already dreading the heat

Years ago used to go to middle east with trucks. Winter very cold with snow and chains for tyres in some of the passes and summer very hot with snow chains again for mud.The vast difference of weather and tempertures is horrendous and must agree august is one of the hottest ones.For EasyJet to start the route in October they must be sure it will work as normally when they start things it works as not many routes been canned.
Stockholm in my mind is a much more sure route working as much more going on and tilted towards tourists.Time will tell on both routes, we have been surprised before.

They took delivery of their first 320neo last month with over a dozen more expected this year. Jethros gives the breakdown.

As for the A321s it depends where they base them but I imagine BRS would get some.

easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, has today announced that it will start two new routes from Bristol Airport to Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm and the capital city of Greece, Athens later this year.

The new routes went on sale this morning at www.easyjet.com.

The new service to Stockholm will start on 31 October 2017, operating twice weekly on an A319 aircraft on Mondays and Thursdays year round with fares starting from £26.49* one-way. Stockholm is a stunning coastal city made up of 14 islands, over 50 bridges and more green spaces than almost any other city in Europe.

The new route to Athens will operate every Monday and Friday on an A3320 aircraft from 6 November 2017 with fares starting from £28.49* one-way. Athens is a modern and bustling city, yet charming and steeped in history with museums and monuments at every turn.

I wonder how much this is to do with helping the passenger experience (if it does) or cutting down on staffing costs.

This seems to be the latest example of all sorts of industries getting the customer to do the work. The main branch of my bank in Bristol has been completely automated for a year or two and customers now have to do all the work themselves. There are no bank clerks behind counters any more at that branch. I suppose the next step will be restaurants installing digital cookers where patrons press buttons and cook their own meals.

I'm from the generation that was used to and expected service and not having to do the job myself.

Some years ago I flew back from Geneva with easyJet and there were machines there where you had to create your own luggage tags and attach them before queuing with the bags at a counter to drop them with a member of staff. The first problem there was pressing buttons to ensure that the machine was addressing you in English with French the default setting.

That works the same as it does now. You'll (presumably) be asked these questions on the screen when you submit the bag, and I'm sure people miss flights after checking in a bag at a staffed counter as well...

I've used the machines at Brussels airport. It's a bit weird/disconcerting the first time, but there are always friendly staff lurking in the background if one needs help. If it's faster I'm not sure, certainly didn't feel like it, but maybe the machines can be packed denser than the counters?
