  • The A320neo aircraft provides 15% savings in CO2 emissions and a 50% noise reduction
  • easyJet reaffirms its commitment to sustainable growth at Bristol Airport
  • Airline posts further reduction in annual CO2 emissions
easyJet, Europe’s leading airline, is today showcasing the airbus A320neo at Bristol Airport. The neo brings significant environmental and operational benefits – up to 15 percent savings in fuel burn and CO2 emissions, and a reduced noise footprint of 50 percent on take-off and landing phase.

The quieter aircraft also crucially minimises impact on local communities. easyJet serves 65 destinations from Bristol, its biggest base outside of London, and the airline is excited to be introducing the neo to some of these routes this year, as our fleet of A320neo increases.

Since 2000 easyJet has reduced its carbon emissions per passenger, per kilometre by over 32%. Its current target is a 10% reduction from its financial year 2016 performance by 2022, which would be a 38% improvement from 2000.

easyJet’s biggest impact on the environment is its fuel consumption and the associated carbon emissions and that is why the airline is currently working on several projects with the aim of continuing to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

    Electric aircraft

In September easyJet announced that it was providing an airline operator’s perspective to Wright Electric which is developing a commercial passenger plane that runs on electric batteries. The collaboration will support their goal for short haul flights to be operated by all-electric planes within 10 years.

    Hydrogen taxiing system

easyJet is working with Safran Landing Systems to trial e-taxi hydrogen fuel cell technology in the coming months in what will be a revolutionary zero emissions taxiing system for its aircraft.
Due to the high frequency and short sector lengths of easyJet’s operations, around 4% of the airline’s total fuel consumed annually is used when the airline’s aircraft are taxiing. Once applied across its fleet of 272 aircraft, this technology could save around 55,000 tonnes of fuel and associated CO2 emissions per year. Trials will take place next year at Toulouse Airport.

    Efficient aircraft

easyJet operates an efficient fleet of Airbus A320 family aircraft equipped with CFM56 engines.

This year easyJet started to operate the new generation Airbus A320neo aircraft. There will be 100 of these aircraft in the fleet by the end of 2022. These aircraft, equipped with CFM LEAP-1A engines and wingtip ‘Sharklets’, are 15% more fuel efficient than current generation aircraft.

From summer 2018 easyJet will also start to receive 30 A321neo aircraft, with 235 seats compared to 186 seats on the A320neo aircraft. This will also contribute to easyJet’s carbon reduction target by reducing the amount of fuel used to carry each passenger.

Sophie Dekkers, easyJet UK country director, said:
“We are very pleased to have continued to deliver a reduction in the amount of CO2 we emit and look forward to reaching our target of 77 grams by 2020. By using modern Airbus aircraft and flying them efficiently we have reduced the carbon impact of our flights by a third since 2000.

“We are delighted to be showcasing our new Airbus A320neo in Bristol today. As Bristol is our biggest UK base outside of London, we are committed to sustainable growth. We believe that within the current cap, there is still room to increase efficiency – for example by incentivising higher load factors as well as the use of modern and efficient aircraft like the Airbus A320neo.

“The A320neo is also 50% quieter during take off and landing, which is hugely important to easyJet as it minimises our impact on the local community.

“Next summer, easyJet will also introduce the 235-seat A321neo which will enable easyJet to continue to deliver growth in slot constrained airports and deliver a further improvement in CO2 per passenger kilometre”

Simon Earles, Planning and Sustainability Director, Bristol Airport said:
“It is exciting to see the introduction of the A320neo at Bristol Airport. This marks a major milestone in the latest aircraft technology being used by our largest airline partner, easyJet.
The aircraft not only delivers improvements in fuel consumption and emissions, it also reduces the noise impact to our local communities during take-off and landing phases. As the city of Bristol is the home of Airbus it is particularly apt to see this aircraft now operating in and out of Bristol Airport.”

Any idea if and when easyJet will release their final summer schedule. Time getting on now ...

I haven't looked at the summer 18 programme in detail. Are there many apparent gaps to be filled?

There's the Amsterdam Wednesday gap to be filled plus the weird 2 week august period where there's increases then decreases straight afterwards. It doesn't look complete at the moment

Thank you. The August thing is particularly odd. Lot's of talk about MAN being dramatically increased this summer post Monarch. I don't know if all the additional routes/rotations have been announced there yet.

I'm watching Manchester closely because I suspect the final schedule will be completed at the same time. It can't be long now ...

Take for example fri24th of august - I make 16 early departures whilst sat 25th I only make 15 early departures.

I make it the same as you did for Friday 24 August:

0600 Catania
0605 Palma
0605 Malaga
0630 Belfast International*
0640 Murcia
0650 Faro
0700 Lisbon
0700 Newcastle
0700 Alicante
0700 Amsterdam
0705 Krakow
0710 Barcelona
0715 Tenerife
0715 Edinburgh
0720 Pisa
0735 Geneva

16 departures

* Belfast International is the extra flight on Friday mornings in this group. It doesn't appear in early August when there are only 3 daily rotations instead of 4 later in the month.

I haven't checked other days in the latter part of August to see how they might vary from early August.

As for only 15 departures in the first group for Saturday 25 August, I looked at August 2017 on Mayfly and on Mondays and Wednesdays there were only 13 departures in the first group of the day, but 14 (the base maximum in summer 2017) on all other days. However, the last group of inbounds on Monday evening/early hours of Tuesday and Wednesday evening/early hours of Thursday numbered 14. It seems it's down to aircraft utilisation.

Apparently easyJet will announce expansion at Manchester next fri (2 Feb). Rumours of up to 18 aircraft based. It will be sad to lose our status of the largest U.K. Base outside london unless they be adding more jets here too

Also a suggestion that up to five of the new MAN aircraft will be wet leases. I'm not sure whether it's this year or next when the five-year agreement between easyJet and BRS ends. When it was announced there was speculation that it would lead to between 16 and 18 based aircraft. So far it's gone from 12 to 15, and possibly 16 later this summer. Furthermore, the number of A320 aircraft at the base has risen and I think continues to do so this year. There has also been a number of new routes in that time - probably around 15, possibly slightly more.

It will be interesting and perhaps a guide to easyJet's thinking if another agreement is put in place when the current one ends.

Do we think bristol will see any easy 321’s one they come into service?
Perhaps in due course but I wouldn't have thought that BRS would be near the head of the queue.

According to Jethro's Fleet Listings easyJet have 30 on order with the first six due for delivery between July and September this year.

I read a post this evening on another aviation forum enquiring whether there are further announcements likely at BFS where there are apparently a number of gaps in the current programme for this summer. So there might yet be something more at BRS even if only for peak summer.

There hasn't been a route announcement today. Any idea when all these gaps are going to be filled ?

According to User001 the announcement has already happened at MAN and it was about the A320neo. As regards to filling in gaps Easyjet have plenty of time .

Gaps starting to be filled eg Palma now an extra 3 flights per week in august
16 flights a week, double daily plus 3 x daily on Fri and Sun.

Total flights each week to Palma in August will be 35 (16 easyJet, 10 Ryanair, 5 TUI, 3 Thomas Cook, 1 BACityFlyer). Let's hope there are enough punters to go around.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
