The fog rolling in here at Weston, will it cause problems at airport like it has the last couple of nights. time will tell.

It's been clear away from the coast all evening - a starlit night. Everything has got in thus far at BRS.

It must be low level coastal fog because nothing has landed at CWL since 1830, after which all arrivals due there have been diverted to BRS except the very late evening Flybe Glasgow which has been cancelled - presumably because the aircraft due to operate the rotation is stuck at BRS.

Flights diverted from CWL to BRS this evening, some after holding for over half an hour overhead CWL, were:

T3 4095 Eastern Airways Jetstream41 from Newcastle
BE 4508 Flybe Embraer 195 from Edinburgh
KL 1069 KLM Cityhopper Fokker 70 from Amsterdam
BE 4528 Flybe Embraer 195 from Dublin
TOM 6309 Thomson Boeing 737-800 from Paphos

The fog will probably decide to visit the hilltops tomorrow morning.

Is BRS having trouble with fog? As according to SWAG the Aer Lingus Dublin flight was diverted into CWL at 08.46 this morning. The aircraft is waiting to depart CWL at the moment. Correction it's just taken off heading back to DUB.

I presume its high winds that causing delays.

Plus the Paris shooting today will have a fall out.

So far it's the only diversion. Everything else has landed although a bmi regional E145 from Frankfurt is currently holding overhead. I live several miles to the north-east of the airport and it's misty but visibility is a couple of miles. However, looking to Dundry Hill to the east of the airport I see the top shrouded in mist so Broadfield Down on which the airport sits, although lower than Dundry Hill, may well be mist-laden.

It looks as though the non-Cat3 aircraft are the ones with problems.

Addendum 1225 hours

The bmi regional from FRA is now shown as diverted on the BRS arrivals page.

Two aircraft (a Flybe E195 and a Thomson B738 for CWL) have been holding overhead CWL for the past ten minutes or so, therefore I imagine the bmi regional has gone to EXT or BHX.

Addendum 1300 hours

The bmi regional E145 from FRA diverted to Exeter.

The two CWL aircraft mentioned in the previous addendum also diverted. The TOM B738 from Alicante diverted to Bristol and the Flybe E195 from Berlin Texel diverted to Exeter.

So far the only other BRS flight to divert today was the Aer Lingus Regional (Stobart) from Cork that went to Southampton. There are still 15 inbound flights yet to land this evening.

Monday 27 March 2017

Difficult morning at BRS with the low cloud base causing problems on runway 09, the active one this morning.

The 0745 Aer Linguis Regional (Stobart) EI3280 from Dublin diverted to Cardiff
The 0755 Ryanair FR504 from Dublin diverted to Cardiff
The 0800 bmi regional BM1800 from Aberdeen diverted to Cardiff
The 0840 Ryanair FR7227 from Krakow diverted to Cardiff
The 0840 Ryanair FR4136 from Warsaw Modlin diverted to Cardiff
The 0925 Brussels Airlines (op by bmi regional) from Brussels diverted to Cardiff
The 0930 easyJet EZY422 from Edinburgh diverted to Cardiff
The 0940 easyJet EZY444 from Belfast International diverted to Cardiff
The 1005 easyJet EZY402 from Glasgow diverted to Exeter
The 1020 easyJet EZY394 from Inverness diverted to Exeter
The 1115 easyJet EZY6086 from Basel diverted to Exeter
The 1125 easyJet EZY6040 from Palma diverted to Cardiff
The 1205 easyJet EZY6052 from Malaga diverted to Exeter

During the morning some aircraft managed to land at BRS between the diversions. It looks as though none of the later fights was cancelled although some are operating significantly behind schedule. Some also operated outbounds from CWL. The airlines must be commended for managing this disruption without cancelling flights.

Looking at the aircraft that diverted away from BRS this morning: a total of 13 with 9 going to CWL and 4 to EXT.

From the scheduled arrival time (0745) that the first aircraft diverted to the scheduled arrival time (1205) that the last aircraft diverted, 13 others managed to land at BRS during that period. The low cloud must have been coming and going around the margins.

the sun came out about 12.00 hrs then things got better. nice sat out side in it as well. hope for more sun and less cloud.

Not a diversion or cancellation but there was an fascinating interview with retired Captain Pam McCoy on Radio Bristol today in connection with the 60th anniversary of the opening of Lulsgate Airport.

She retired a few years ago (I think from Thomas Cook although it wasn't mentioned) having flown as a captain, and training captain, for many years. She still lives in the area.

In answer to the inevitable question about the degree of difficulty BRS presents to pilots she said that it's improved out of all recognition since she first flew into the airport and described the process these days as 'easy peasy' (obviously for a highly trained airline pilot - my italics).

She also made an interesting point about the fog. She said that BRS is the only airport she knows that can suffer fog in 20 knot winds. She described how the moisture rises from the Severn hits the hill on which BRS stands and condenses. She also pointed out that on other occasions low level radiation fog can mean that BRS stands above it when many other airports are fogged in.

She's not heard of Leeds then?
She did say there are many airports around the world much more difficult than Bristol but I don't think she was thinking of any UK airport.

I was slightly surprised about her regarding BRS as 'easy peasy' because other airline pilots have said in the past that BRS can still be tricky, especially landing on runway 09 in certain wind conditions.

She did make the point that the BRS runway has not been lengthened in her time but that improved navigational procedures have greatly assisted matters. She said she wouldn't bore listeners with the technical details. That's always a frustration when a programme is for a general audience when those with a particular interest in the subject would like more technical details.

EZY 3361/3362 Venice MP/Bristol/Venice MP 1430/1500 cancelled. Operated by VCE-based aircraft. I don't know the reason for the cancellation. Ryanair's Venice MP arrived back at BRS at 1202, just two minutes late.

I note that EZY 6276 from Krakow due at 1240 is showing eta 1400. Several other easyJet flights are showing 20-30 minute delays.

I hope we don't get a repeat of last Sunday with a number of very lengthy easyJet delays with some rotations eventually cancelled.

Ryanair FR8263 from Bergamo due BRS 0810 shown as 'diverted' on BRS website and 'diverted to BHX' on FR24. The return to Bergamo at 0835 is not shown at all on the BRS departures page.

It seems a bit odd given that nothing else diverted and two other Ryanair aircraft landed around that time: from Dublin at 0732 and from Palma at 0800.

Technical fault? Do they have engineers based at BHX?

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
