Amritsargate continues, they really are not very happy.


Air India has started Ahmedabad – London – Newarkdirect flight in August 2016, Varanasi to Colombo flight in August 2017 and now Air India has announced Chandigarh to Bangkok direct flight from 11th December, 2017 violating its own Hub and Spoke policy. If Air India can start direct nonstop flight operations from Ahmedabad, Varanasi & Chandigarh then why Air India cannot start direct Amritsar-London-Toronto & Amritsar-Birmingham flights ?

On December 11, 2016 during Inauguration of Bathinda Airport, the then Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal also stated that Union Govt. has accorded sanction to Direct Delhi – Amritsar – Birmingham flight.

In December 2016 BJP RajyaSabha MP from Amritsar, Sh. Shwait Malik also announced that Air India will start Amritsar – London Heathrow Direct flight from April 1, 2017 but nothing has happened till now, he added.

Jayant Sinha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation announced in Parliament on 20th March, 2017 that Air India will start direct flight between Amritsar – Birmingham soon. But even after lapse of 8 months, it hasn’t become a reality, said he.

Credit where credit is due though, Amritsar really are trying hard to get their new routes in.

If it's point to point traffic that they are targeting I wonder if they'd have more luck with the likes of Spicejet, Indigo or Vistara?

Hope they do get off the ground and offer something new. A jet2 for medium and long haul. Good luck to them. Nice to read about a new British start up.

Begin with Jetstream aircraft before upgrading to ATRs
18-24 months acquire B737 or A320 type aircraft
36 months acquire B777 or A 330 type aircraft
5 years have a mixed fleet of ten aircraft.

They aspire to becoming a major UK long haul carrier and believe that their plans will set them on 'an intractable path' to becoming that type of operator. Interesting choice of adjective; do they really mean that?

I've never been involved in setting up airlines so have to admit I have no first-hand knowledge but is this really viable?

Well with the demise of Monarch maybe they have a better chance now than before but as we have said time and time again, too much capacity on routes is disaster.

I'm thinking of proposed start-ups such as FlyForBeans that had serious backers and a staff of experienced aviation people, including their CEO, that failed to get off the ground - literally. Perhaps the name was a problem although I've remembered it whilst forgetting the names of other proposed airlines that also never made it.

I'm pretty sure their Jetstream aircraft is an old Links Air aircraft. I read a little about them and apparently theirs going to be a TV programme about them trying to set the airline up and I think crowd funding was mentioned as well.
I also noticed on their website they said about scheduled and charter flights. Is their a niche for that type of airline in the UK? And would they get the backing they need from the holiday companies?

These came on the scene 12-18 months ago planning flights from the UK to Bangladesh initially (A330's I think) with many more long haul routes to follow. They seem to have reigned in the ambition a little and are planning to start off smaller.

Talk of 16 frames re short haul into Manchester, any news re Birmingham?

There is also talk on another thread of both a Chinese and Indian route into Manchester. Would both not push back any prospect of expansion Eastbound ?

I believe Jet2 will open a further 2 routes from BHX, and Ryanair at least 1 more based aircraft.

The Manchester news isn't public yet as its info coming from the internal system and the ACL reports, so, its likely BHX is in a similar situation and therefore just a 'hold on' situation for the news to filter out.

at Birmingham the slots have been shared amongst six airlines including Primera Airlines as a new entrant. The carrier has already announced plans to launch trans Atlantic flights from Birmingham to Boston, New York and Toronto using new A321neos, but has also revealed its first short-haul schedules from the UK with daily services from Birmingham to Malaga and Palma from May-2018 using 189-seat Boeing 737-800s (it will also launch daily flights from London Stansted to Alicante and Malaga from Apr-2018). It is understood it will now base three aircraft at Birmingham after gaining some of the former Monarch slots.
