Terminal 3 is having some work done to try and improve the passenger experience.

Security is getting 3 more lanes, so that there will be 9 in total (currently only 6 in full time use, lanes 2 and 7 were older machinery so were never really used).

Lane 2 will eventually become fast track, and fast track only.

Lane 7 and lane 8 are being upgraded so that they can be used full time, and thus brings the 9 into play. More staff are being taken on over the winter so that summer can hit the ground running.

Airside, they have removed 2 shops (luggage point and swatch) as well as moving the information desk so that more seating can be put in (yes you read it here first, shops have been removed to increase the seating, who would have guessed it lol).

They are also trying to look at methods to make the signage a bit more clear so that people find it easier to get around.
 
At least something is being done to try and improve passenger experience. It doesn't tackle the shortage of parking stands for based a/c though. Is there any indication that Ryanair are interested in some of the MON slots which could highlight the issue, or are they effectively ruled out if there is a continuing crew shortage problem?
 
The petrol station opposite T1 is now pretty much demolished. It's going to be a new multi storey car park (nothing fancy, just a one level steel structure).
 
I was going to ask if there has been any developments re Airport City ?

Must confess when it was annouced I expected a building site to emerge similar to what is happening re the T2 expansion but the progress here has been glacial by comparison.

Hope the Enterprise Way route will get things moving.
 
An interesting series of case studies showing how AMS, FRA and CDG integrate rail and air fares/ timetables etc to generate more customers. MAN should use HS2/NPR to try and generate a similar volume (extracts from page 88 onward reproduced below).

Frankfurt International Airport has a dedicated station on Germany’s ICE high speed rail line linking Frankfurt and Cologne. Lufthansa gives passengers the option to buy their air and rail tickets together and to check in to their ights and drop o luggage at Cologne train station. Passengers can also earn frequent yer points and miles whilst on the train. Air and rail timetables are integrated to minimise waiting time for passengers156. Almost two-thirds of train passengers on the rail line linking Cologne and Frankfurt either arrive or leave by plane.


The Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport TGV High Speed station was built in 1994 with the aim of creating greater speed and convenience between train and air travel. Over 50 high speed trains per day connect CDG Airport to major towns in France. The station also has ve daily high speed connections to Brussels and Amsterdam.

The TGV air service from the station combines international ights from several di erent operators with TGV journeys into a unique single ticket to many di erent destinations. Passengers are able to check in at Brussels for ights from CDG, boosted by TGV Air being partnered with several international airlines and also being promoted by travel agencies.
 
Wasn't sure if here was the right place to post it, but some (not surprising) news on the future.

Q: Terminal 3 continues to receive bad press, due to severe congestion inside the Terminal. What will T3 be used for in the future?

A: Yes all the focus is on T2 currently. T3 is very busy and with the 7 million passenger throughput it is twice as big as East Midlands Airport in its own right and is now well exceeding its original planned usage. As for the future, I cannot be specific but T1 will go and the focus will be on how to rebalance the capacity in T3 and the new T2.

Q: To address the overnight stand capacity restrictions, can you persuade more non-based aircraft to be used by Airlines?

A: We are indeed full every night, although there is some extra capacity in T2 Transformation. Non-based aircraft actually works well for Ryanair, hopefully EasyJet will do the same in the future.

Q: The Manchester Motorway network will soon be full, how can you maximise Public Transport?

A: This is certainly an ongoing and important issue. Future high Speed rail links will be of great benefit to the airport.

2 new hotels on the Airport city site have gone for planning permission. At long last we may see some actual buildings for Airport city:

I ended also noticed that red 2 piling rigs have been present in the location shown for about a week. Looks like it could be a multi storey, but not seen any planning permissions put in? Any ideas?

In terms of the latter I had seen an article about a short (4/5 story) MSCP on that site so think you are probably correct.

In terms of the former, good to see it is out of the way of a potential straight line extension to the T2 eastern pier (to link with a potential new combined T1/3 building).
 
Thanks for the hotel potential hotel info. The artist's impressions appear very similar to those that I recall seeing around 2 years ago - somethings never change!!
 
Yes Scottie you are right. The site had planning permission for an hotel in 2014 varied in 2015. Also for an office next door. This is a rehash for two hotels 4 and 3 star with direct access to the station.
 
The 2 hotels will be Garden Inn by hilton and Hampton inn by Hilton. This means there will be 3 Hilton hotels within 100 yards.

These will be built in the same shipping container concept currently being seen at BHX, and are slated to be complete by February 2019.
 
Just for balance the shipping container concept currently being seen at BHX, was first used in Manchester at The Trafford Centre.

Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
