It's great news that there is talk inside of BE about a 4th based aircraft coming to CWL Summer 2019, with new routes in Italy, Spain, Germany and UK being mentioned
FLYBE INVESTS IN A THIRD AIRCRAFT FOR CARDIFF
Flybe is to station an additional aircraft and recruit 22 new crew members at Cardiff Airport to support additional flights from South Wales.
The 88-seat Embraer 175 jet will be based at Cardiff with a local crew from 27 March.
The regional airline has operated two aircraft from Cardiff Airport since it opened a base there in 2015 with a forecast that it would create 50 new jobs. It now employs 62 staff at the airport in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The third jet will enable Flybe to serve new destinations, including Venice, and increase the frequency of flights on established routes.
Vince Hodder, Flybe’s chief strategy officer, said Flybe hoped to make further inroads into serving the 7.7 million people within a two hour drive of Cardiff Airport.
He said: "Ultimately, it comes down to the way the airport and Flybe work together to build routes. Working together, we can try different things and experiment."
The airline will consider flights to fresh destinations in Germany, Italy, Spain and the rest of the UK, Hodder told Insider.
He added: "We have already started planning for a fourth aircraft. It’s always nice to introduce a new aircraft at the start of the summer season.
"That could be summer next year, or the year after. It depends how the market absorbs the capacity we are adding in this year."
Flybe estimates this year's additional investment will be worth about £80m to the Welsh economy, based on multiplying direct spending by seven. The aircraft itself is worth about £29m.
This summer, Flybe will reach 17 destinations from Cardiff. The airline enjoyed a 130 per cent rise in passenger numbers to 43,000 through its Cardiff base in December 2017, compared to 19,000 in June 2015.
Hodder said the 62 jobs created directly by Flybe in Cardiff over the past three years had been accompanied by about 100 support and airport roles, and about 400 jobs in the wider economy.
Deb Barber, chief executive of Cardiff Airport, said: “The opening of Flybe’s base in 2015 played an important part in our journey of recovery and transformation.
"Today, it’s a key employer in the area, supporting a number of direct and indirect roles, which will be boosted with the arrival of the third aircraft, adding real value to the local economy in South Wales."
