A new update from "Our Friend" showing the second escalator being installed leading to/from the Food/Beverage Hall.

I must admit the above picture really made clear how different the original T2 and the T2X will look (from the outside at least). I realise knocking down the original T2 and rebuilding it to the style of the T2X was going to be unrealistic, but are there any plans to update the interior to better match T2X?
Aesthetically all interior art released so far shows current T2 looking much the same, landslide at least. However, the original proposal was to remodel passenger flow to match T2X - that is island check in, enlarged security, and all food and shops moved to an expanded upper level.

The final shots of the pier in the last update certainly looked nice for departures, they did a good job with the lighting. The arrivals level doesn't half look grey and plain, though. Wished there was at least a little bit of dark black accent somewhere. Oh well. I fear that might age quite quickly :) Still, reserving judgement until it's in use!

Somebody asked above about which airlines will use the new pier. I'm not sure if this is inaccurate information or not, but I read on another forum a while ago that Star Alliance was going to be one of the first tenants?

I agree the pier looks very good - the only thing left to be installed now will be the fruit machines?? :)

Yes I had heard the same about Star Alliance some months ago, however I have since been told that it will be a general mix of carriers - depending upon time, equipment type etc. Maybe they should move the opening date from 1st to 2nd April??

I cannot remember for sure, but don't airlines have the ability to specify a preference for contact vs remote stands? If so, those with a preference for contact will be more likely to use the new pier. It might also be the case that the number of airlines/routes routinely using the new pier may increase over the course of the summer season as the handling agents get more familiar with it.

I would have thought that the new Pier would be used by the current T2 Carriers, would make sense since Jet2 have just moved a load of flights over to T2.

Also remember within the next 12 months or so T2 is likely to loose most of its existing contact stands too. All those current planes will need somewhere to go.

"Our Friend" has sent this photo of the Corridor along the front of the T2 Extension between the current terminal and the Link Connector.

Does anybody know what the split will end up being between the existing T2 building and the new T2X? By the looks of things T2X will have everything that an airport terminal needs (check in, arrivals, security, passport control) - so I'm wondering what role the existing T2 space will play?

I know it's getting more or less (gut?) renovated, and will this just result in having 2 of everything? (one can imagine "check in north/south", "arrivals north/south" etc...)

From the YouTube videos and the planning doccuments there will be check-in desks and security areas in both the original T2 and T2X once the renovations are finished. These are all on level 20. There will be one continuous retail and concessions area on Level 30 across both sections and additional restaurants and lounges on level 45 in T2X. So yes T2X is quite a bit bigger than the current T2.

As for arrivals. It looks like international arrivals will be catered for in T2X (at least primarily) with immigration being moved to the extension and the current immigration area being handed over to baggage sorting and the like. On Level 0, the old baggage claim area (or the majority of it) looks like it will be changed to domestic baggage and the new are in T2X held for international. Of course that split will probably change as the domestic traffic will be much less than international.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Are the planning documents publicly available? Would love to pore through them.

I should also take another look at the YouTube videos, I thought I'd watched them all but I don't remember them being that specific.

Thanks!

[Edit] ah, duh, I just watched the video with the child's voice again for the first time in a year and now see the "Security North" sign. A bit of a giveaway... Also, on a different note it's great to watch that video again now we have photos of it half built. Really helps you piece it all together.

A fuller set from "Our Friend" although unfortunately no descriptions were included and I'm afraid that I don't recognise the specific locations:

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. The news items can then be shared on the site homepage by you. #TakePart #Forums4airports Bring the news to one place!
survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
