Driving past the new admin building late this afternoon, noticed that most of the windows are now fitted indicating that construction is progressing steadily.Which is just as well because I received an e-mail from Bristol airport spotters website the other week to say that the proposed spotters days at the old terminal building later this year are no longer possible as the builing will be demolished in May.
Was there any indication if there was going to be a spotters day and where the venue would be,or that is work in progress.
I know the 2018 Aviation Fair was not held because it was said it had become too successful in the number of visitors it attracted with a consequent detrimental effect on some aspects of the normal life of the airport - car parking for staff was apparently impacted adversely for example.

Last year's Spotters' Day went ahead per this thread.

I believe there will be no more spotters days anymore due to lack of space due to the building works.

Current developments

I passed through the airport briefly today - not flying but changing buses (in early afternoon today there were almost more buses at the front of the terminal than at the city bus station - not quite but it was very crowded including airport shuttle buses).

The south side new admin block and new fire station are the main buildings on that side of the airfield under construction, although the fire station must be nearly complete by now I'd have thought. Did I see another low building I hadn't noticed before to the north of the south side entry road?

On the north side the extra storeys of the first MSCP are going along at a pace as is the conversion of the former staff car park to aircraft stands next to the old terminal building.

However, I spotted another structure in the course of erection that I hadn't previously noticed - the steel skeleton of what appears to be a four/five storey building between the control tower and drop-off car park. Does anyone know what that is?

Good evening
My first post on the forum, I think the new building ATC is a new admin building for Airline crews when they leave the old terminal building.
regards

Mike
Welcome to F4A, Mike. Many thanks for that. We hope to read more posts from you in the future. Best wishes from F4A.

BRS are constructing a ‘new combined main gate facility and airline building’. The site is located in between the passenger terminal and the air traffic control tower.
The ‘main gate’ is the point where airline / BRS staff and goods pass through security control when entering and leaving the ‘airside’ area of the airport. The proposed building is 4-storeys high. It is approximately 33 metres long x 18.4 metres wide x 16 metres high, although there is a small area of roof top plant which increases that part of the building to over 18 metres high.
The ground floor comprises the main gate security control and the upper floors consist of airline offices, meeting rooms and associated facilities. A bridge link connects the building to the adjoining western walkway at second floor level. A vehicle security control point is located at the west side of the building.
This building will contain most of the airline crew rooms (EZY, TUI, TCX etc).

Many thanks, Severn. I must have missed mention of that particular building amongst the continuing amelioration at the airport.

Ref south side developments. The new fire station has been in use for a couple of months and very impressive it is too. The other low building you may be referring to is the new car hire facility which will be commissioned for this summer. Additional work is adding capacity to Silver Zone (again), partly by incorporating some of the southern GA parking area, with Taxiway H being redirected to follow the course of the old grass link as a Code B tarmac taxiway. The airport also now owns 2 fields between the A38 and the old boundary to the southeast and contractors are erecting security fencing as well as removing hedgerows.

Many thanks for that update, Kingshat. Most informative.

Bristol Airport fire station handed over
Created: 28th Mar 2019

Mechanical and electrical engineering consultancy McCann and Partners completed the MEP design for a £5m state of the art fire station at Bristol Airport, which has now been handed over.

This is the latest in a series of developments that McCann and Partners have and will be undertaking at Bristol Airport, which has planning approvals in place to handle 10 million passengers per annum.

As well as the new fire station, which is located next to the runway and the existing fire training ground, the upcoming developments will include an immigration hall and new airline building, the first of which has recently commenced.

Jeff Price, Mechanical Director at McCann and Partners, said:

“Bristol Airport is going through such an exciting period of growth at the moment and we are delighted to have been involved in its expansion over the past few years.

“The airport team are continually investing in sustainable, low carbon systems and we’ve been working closely with them throughout 2018 to ensure that this building is extremely energy efficient.

“Working on this state of the art development has been a huge opportunity for us at McCann and Partners, and we look forward to expanding on this in the coming months.”

Andrew Goodenough, Development Director at Bristol Airport, said:

“We are currently completing a variety of development projects at the airport to meet the growth in passenger numbers. Sustainability and energy efficiencies are key factors and decision drivers for all projects and it is great to work with a business like McCann and Partners, who share the same approach in promoting state-of-the-art technology and design in development.”

McCann and Partners specialise in providing the full range of building services associated with mechanical, electrical and public health engineering systems - developing innovative and bespoke design solutions. Working across multiple sectors, its commitment is to developing exemplary, sustainable buildings through a collaborative approach to design.

What's the position with aircraft stand availability at BRS now? With flybmi departing and two more new stands nearing completion would there be room for two or three more based aircraft of A320/B738 size?

I ask because elsewhere on F4A someone was musing about the possibility of Jet2 moving into South West Britain but discounted BRS because of a perceived lack of space.

I'm not suggesting for a minute that Jet2 would come but would lack of parking space be an issue if they seriously considered the option? I realise that although flybmi had 5/6 aircraft at BRS not every stand can take every type of aircraft that uses the airport.

Didn’t Ryanair start a base after Flybe took over ba connect and withdrew from Bristol ? Just saying this is a perfect opportunity ...

Flybe took over BAConnect in May 2007 and closed the BRS base and most of the routes, and Ryanair opened its BRS base either at the end of October or early November 2007. Prior to the base Ryanair operated form BRS to Dublin, Shannon and Girona from other bases.

I don't know if BACon pulling out had anything to do with Ryanair's base arrival. Ryanair's BRS routes in its first season as a base (winter 2007-2008) were Katowice, Wroclaw, Rzeszow, Poznan, Budapest, Porto, Bratislava, Riga, Dinard, Derry, Bergamo, Dublin, Knock, Shannon and Girona. None of these routes was operated by BACon. All except Bratislava, Riga, Dinard and Derry still operate, either by Ryanair or other airlines.

Am I right in thinking some of the Flybmi aircraft parked over night on the southern apron.

The aircraft stands which used to park FlyBMI aren't big enough for an A319 or A320. They don't want to make them bigger for the meantime incase things change. But there are more aircraft stands in progress which should be operational by May time I believe.

Stand availability will not be a problem for Bristol this year. Up to 7 Flybmi aircraft were on the ground at times last year of which a couple remain northside. Two new stands will be available for this summer, but 7N has been sacrificed for DHL vehicles.

What is DHL doing at the airport.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
