Atkins appointed as lead designer and project manager for Birmingham Airport terminal transformation
March 2019, Cannes, France
– Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, has been appointed to a series of contracts at Birmingham Airport to manage the upgrade and extension of the airport terminals, and to oversee the airfield reconfiguration, as part the airport’s Master Plan to provide a sustainable future for air transport in the Midlands.
The announcement, made at the MIPIM* conference in Cannes, today (Wednesday 13th), outlines how, over the next five years, Atkins will assist Birmingham Airport in replacing and upgrading its current assets, using innovative technology to prepare the airport for the future demand on air travel. Atkins is overseeing the first phase of the terminal expansion as project manager and lead designer.

Announcing the news from France, Birmingham Airport’s CEO, Nick Barton said, “Our Master Plan looks ahead to the year 2033 and outlines how the airport will develop the site to handle the 40% expected growth in passengers. A significant element of the £500m investment over the next 14 years is the terminal transformation project, to deliver a world-class terminal facility for our customer that can cater for the growth in demand. We are therefore delighted to have awarded Atkins the contract for the lead design and project management for this package of works and we look forward to working in collaboration with them.”
Mike McNicholas, Managing Director for Infrastructure at SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business, said: “The transformation of Birmingham Airport will bring improved connectivity and economic prosperity to the region. We look forward to working closely with Birmingham Airport and their stakeholders on this project, applying the latest technology and our Human Centred Design approach in new and exciting ways to inform the airport’s transformation at this early stage.”
In 2018, Atkins deployed innovative technology to minimise the future disruption of work to the airport. This was achieved through virtual reality technology and the creation of a fully coordinated 3D digital model of the airport. This model will be used continuously over the next five years, allowing the team to test and develop plans in a safe environment, with reduced impact on airport operations.
As part of the airport redesign, Atkins is also using its Human Centred Design approach. This method uses data collected through web-based surveys conducted during the early stages of the project to ensure that passenger health, safety and wellbeing plays a central role in the terminal’s new design. The Airport’s Master Plan further reinforces the integral part the Airport plays as a catalyst for growth across the Midlands and in the UK’s economic prosperity. It outlines the Airport’s role in driving future economic benefit to the region which will increase by 42%, totalling £2.1 billion a year and 34,000 jobs by 2033.
A greater choice of flights and destinations, alongside improved regional connectivity and a direct link to HS2, are vital to the continued growth of the region’s thriving economy. The global markets to which the Airport connects help to drive international trade, investment, employment, inbound tourism and the success of the region’s many universities.
Working with airport owners, airlines, governments, lenders and construction companies, Atkins provides multi-disciplinary expertise at every stage of aviation projects, from strategic planning through to concept and detailed design. Atkins’ global portfolio includes projects of all scales, and includes Dubai International Airport, Atlanta International Airport, and Heathrow Airport.

Birmingham Airport Announces Electric Bus Contract
Birmingham Airport has awarded Volvo Bus UK the contract to supply the airport with six 7900e single deck electric buses. Launching in November 2019, the ultra-low emission buses will operate as the free passenger transport service via all airport car park routes.
The decision to introduce electric buses came as a result of a review undertaken by the airport into its future vehicle provision. The Volvo 7900e will provide an 80% lower energy consumption than an equivalent sized diesel bus.
Two high level charging points will be installed outside of the terminal. Additional plug-in charging points will be located in the coach park – and in the future, these will be made available for other electric bus and or coach operators to use.

Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport said: “This partnership is a key milestone for us. We are always investigating new and innovative ways to reduce our carbon emissions and through the partnership with Volvo Bus UK, we will do just this.
“We have made significant customer service improvements across the airport to increase capacity and improve passenger experience, with the vision of positioning Birmingham as one of Europe’s leading regional airports. The electric buses form part of this vision, not to mention their sustainability benefits being ultra-low emission.
“Since 2012 the Airport has reduced its CO2 per passenger by 20%. Implementing the six electric buses will work towards lowering this even further which is just fantastic.”
Nick Page, Managing Director of Volvo Bus UK & Ireland, said: “It is very exciting that the 7900e has been chosen for Birmingham Airport in support of its ambition to provide the best possible environmentally friendly bus service for airport customers and stakeholders alike.
“Over the last 15 months the 7900e has undertaken a UK wide demonstration tour where it has shown the contribution that can now be made to improving air quality in the areas where it has been in service. We are confident the 7900e and accompanying technologies will help Birmingham Airport to achieve its goals.”

Is it me or are we getting more cargo and ad hoc action at BHX? been following FR24 the last few days and come evening time there are a number of different movements. Even a Cessna Caravan this evening.

Could the former MAEL hanger be converted to cargo?

I visited the airport briefly on March 22, 2019 and observed what could have been a Cessna 525 with what I thought was *H-FAN as its registration. This does not seem to be correct as I am unable to match it to a logical registration. Can somebody help please?

I received the above as an email if anyone can help. I have no idea if John has registered with us.

Ian, how do you filter the information of movements onto your website? I do computing and web development and I'm just curious do you input all of the data yourself? (i.e you watch the movements yourself and then put it on) or is it from a data feed from the airport for example? Cheers!

Of course don't answer that if you don't wish, just asking purely from curiosity

The information is typed in manually to the daily template but info sourced from SBS / FR24 etc, if there anything you can help us with to automate more we would be happy to discuss.

OCS have won a five year contract for cleaning and facilities management at BHX. It seems that as part of the deal there may be a new fleet of multipurpose snow clearing vehicles.

Part of the solution being deployed by OCS is a complete refresh of equipment, and introduction of the latest technologies including a fleet of multipurpose snow clearing vehicles.

If the 'winterization' vehicles :vomit: are 'multipurpose snow clearing vehicles ' surely they shouldn't be described as specific 'snow clearing vehicles ' :ROFLMAO:.

Good to see that there has been news items posted up to the website and other social media channels for 4 consecutive days with the latest being the April passenger numbers, published yesterday. Lets hope this continues as it increases the profile even if its not yet new routes or airlines.

have Monarch risen from the ashes!!!! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Birmingham Departures for this morning :-

View attachment 13286

I belive its just the handling agent, playing around, testing the system, but why pick Monarch, cant they invent an imaginary airline, how about Air Birmingham instead!!! and oh dear, dont tell Ray about the 2nd destination they picked....

That would indicate that their were no unfortunate accidents that week.Another success story for BHX.

I think that deserves a press release, got to keep the media centre busy somehow :)

dont tell Ray about the 2nd destination they picked....

Orlando was specifically mentioned back in 2012 as a target for growth and they have now managed it. It's only taken seven years to get one extra weekly flight to Sanford so we may need to cut them some slack :grumpy:

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
