After Liverpool came back from 0-3 down in the first leg against Barcelona to win 4-0 in the second last night, Spurs staged a similar remarkable fightback from 'the dead' in their semi-final in Amsterdam against Ajax this evening.

Trailing 0-1 from the first leg in London, Spurs quickly went 0-2 down in Amsterdam this evening, 0-3 down overall.

They then fought back in the second half in incredible style with two quick goals making it 2-2 on the night and a winner in the match seconds from the end of the additional five minutes allowed by the referee. This tied the contest at 3-3 on aggregate but Spurs go through to the final having scored more away goals.

Spurs' hero was Moura who scored all three goals.

Liverpool v Spurs in Madrid will be the first all-England final since 2008 when Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow.

Having watched the Liverpool - Barcelona game, I thought I'd witnessed the most amazing Champions League semi-final. Then came the Ajax - Spurs game. Absolutely thrilling and Spurs scoring in the last minute of stopage time was unbelievable.

I can only hope that the final is as entertaining. One thing's for sure - the Champions League Cup is coming to England.

One of our grandsons is in Australia at the moment. He is a huge Spurs fan and got up before 5am Victoria time (Thursday there of course) to watch the game. When Spurs went 0-2 down fairly quickly (0-3 overall) he went back to bed. Obviously a fair-weather supporter. He will get some stick from me and his father (our son).

He's going to be upset when he knows what he missed.

I'm still trying to get my head around the amazing Champions League semi-finals that I've watched over the last two evenings.
I have found this video which shows the highlights of the Ajax - Spurs game, form a pitch side view. It's worth watching, for the reactions of the studio pundits (Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Glenn Hoddle) to the goals and result of the game.
The video is on Youtube and from BT Sport.

He's out in Oz for two years playing cricket in their summer and working on a friend's farm - he's a floor layer by trade. He's coming back to the UK briefly for a family wedding later this year but now the silly so and so is talking about flying to Madrid from Oz just to soak up the atmosphere on the Final day. Getting a match ticket is virtually out of the question. Then again, he's young and it might be a once in a lifetime opportunity for an avid Spurs fan since early boyhood, so why not I suppose.

Great videos, Kevin. Thank you so much for posting them.

Just an aside, but for years I was always amused when fans began leaving the ground a few minutes from the end because their team was losing and in so doing missed a late important goal. The cheering of those who had stayed to the end would lead to many of those who were in the act of leaving to run back to the top of the steps overlooking the pitch as if they were about to see a replay of the goal.

These days of course with big screens around many grounds they might well see a replay.

This young lad's experience reminds me of the EU Referendum. I went to bed with all the pundits still believing the Remainers would win the day only to wake up the following morning to find they had lost.

Back to football, and what another coup for the Premier League with Chelsea and Arsenal in the final of the Europa Cup, the first time ever that teams from one country have contested the two major European football finals.

In recent seasons I began to think that the Premier League was losing its grip to some extent, with Spanish clubs in the ascendant. The Prem has always been the most watched league around the world mainly because, although the technical quality might not be quite as good as the likes of Spain and Italy, the excitement and entertainment is usually far greater. From current evidence it is easily arguable that the Prem is the best league in Europe* from all angles at the moment.

* ergo probably the best league in the world

Congratulations Liverpool on becoming champions (2-0).

I watched the game on the BT Sports feed but in truth it was a disappointing affair, especially after the drama and excitement of the semi-finals, and not a great advertisement for the Premier League.

Spurs had more of the play for much of the game after going behind to a penalty awarded in the first thirty seconds of the match, but they huffed and puffed and created little until the last fifteen minutes, and even then didn't really cause the Liverpool keeper to make saves that would really test a keeper at this level.

Then when Liverpool had a fairly rare chance near the end they took it clinically after Spurs had made a horrible mess of trying to clear their lines.

Over the ninety minutes I didn't think either side really did enough to say a win was justified but Liverpool took their chances, albeit one was a penalty, whilst Spurs did not so in the end you can't argue with that.

From The Liverpool Echo Newspaper.

Liverpool's triumphant players and staff touched down at John Lennon airport today - complete with the Champions League trophy .

Manager Jurgen Klopp and captain Jordan Henderson led the way off the plane and down the steps to the waiting coaches after flying back from Madrid.

The rest of the team lined up behind them, proudly displaying their winning medals and waving to onlookers. The red ribbons on the trophy also fluttered in the breeze.

They were welcomed by airport staff in hi-vis jackets on the runway, many of whom were taking pictures or videos as their unique souvenir of the homecoming.

The team and trophy will head back into town before the victory parade around the city later this afternoon.
