Still doesn't make sense.
Only plausible reason is interference to ILS
I will ask my contact in atc to see if they were on shift today at the time it was on approach.

Looking at the track on flight radar, to me it looks very much like a non-precision approach (VOR or NDB) with a visual re-alignment with the runway in the final stages of the approach.

Some airports have the "beacon" at the end of the runway, or off airport on the extended centreline (EMA has one 5 miles from the end of each runway), in which case the track of the approach will be no different to an ILS.

As @oldendays highlights, if the beacon is north of the runway, the aircraft will initially track toward the beacon at an offset angle to the runway. They will continue this until a "decision height" - the latest point at which the pilots must have visual contact with the runway to continue, otherwise they go around. At this point, if the pilots are visual, they will reposition the aircraft to line up with the runway.

Depending on how offset the NDB approach is at LBA, it may have required quite a large turn towards the North to line up with the runway.

If the ILS was available, it may have been the pilots requested an NDB for training purposes.

I remember British midland as they were in the day putting on extra LBA LHR rotations during times of rail strikes. Probably not enough free LHR slots these days for that
They scheduled a 737-400 for all flights between LBA and LHR at one time. Smart move.

In the late seventies they drafted in an F27-100 for this purpose.

You may well be right about the timings. I always assume that if I saw an aircraft airside I was working at the airport, but after I left I used to go back airside regularly (no one challenged me!) I left in approx 1980.

I was sure they had a 100 series for a time, painted in BMA livery but its a long time ago.

Definitely remember G SPUD which was as you say a 100 series aircraft.

According to LBA departures the BE757 to Heathrow is running at least 3 hours late. That means return won't be back here until 01:15 (scheduled 22:15) I wonder if they will be caught in the curfew at LHR. I assume crew will have sufficient hours otherwise they would have kept the plane at Leeds.

As a footnote, I see the BE756 (the earlier LHR-LBA was cancelled)

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
