Well over the last 18 months or so Birmingham has got interesting. Lots more variety, lots more wide bodies and the biggest draw of all, the A380.

If there's ever going to be demand for something then it must now be at it's peak?

How about Emirates, they like sponsoring stuff all over the place. They can even call it the Emirates Sky Experience ??? Has anybody contacted Emirates ????

I still think BHX is missing a trick by not having a dedicated viewing facility (I know, I'm biased, I like watching aeroplanes).
The facility itself may not be a money spinner, but it's a great way to educate the public. When I used to go up to the old viewing lounge, it was often very full and a large proportion of those people were seeing off friends or relatives. These are the people who will look at display boards, make mental notes of the routes available and maybe pass on the info to friends and neighbours.
I also remember the long stay car park with many families viewing on a sunny Sunday afternoon. This has died off most probably due to the cost of parking. I was there for several hours to see the A380 and others and it cost me £32. I can't unfortunately see that changing in the foreseeable future.

Further to Kevin Farnells's post, irrespective of whether people are meeting or greeting, taking the kids to watch plane land and take-off is a fund afternoon out for the family. And i am surprised that BHX has not done more to provide this facility.

I have family in Perth, Western Australia, and there the airport has created a dedicated and landscaped outdoor viewing facility. And if it rains? Well there, they have constructed a weatherproof canopy utilising the fuselage of a redundant 747. Google Perth Airport and take a look, it is really impressive.

I took a look at the Perth facility and have to say it's excellent, with unobstructed views and it appears, the sun behind you - perfect for photography.
If only we could have something like that at BHX.
I remember the numbers in the old viewing facility falling dramatically, when the lower floors of the terminal were extended out. This blocked the view of aircraft on stand, so people stopped coming to see friends/relatives depart.
Prior to that, there could be so many people that they sometimes had to restrict access to the viewing facility due to fire restrictions.

Good grief Kevin, there's dedication. It's the sort of difference that people spend 2 h on a computer to get a price advantage (e.g. vs BHX) and then are happy to spend more in time and fuel to achieve the 'saving'. In terms of the amount, Richard made a pertinent typo 'is a fund afternoon'!

I wholeheartedly agree with the viewing facility idea. How about asking BA for a 747-400 on retirement? In the future... 'Dad; which airline was this? Oh it used to be called British Airways son. It's still going but called London Emirates.'

I mean Emirates or Qatar about funding a viewing area. Emirates in particular are normally very good at sponsoring things and putting there name on stuff, for example the BHX monorail.

I have been bashing Twitter like there is no tommorow trying to contact the likes of Mr Branson etc, but will they chat-will they heck, im following quite a few others on there also, but its so hard to get them to follow so you can pm them, i have sent an email off to Emirates but after a week - nothing back yet.

I had considered the Rugby ground across the A45 near the 33 threshold because this could be an independent site that the airport could not quibble with or knock it, a purpose built building could be built with a few levels and could serve two purpposes - A large viewing center high enough to look right over the noise bund by the A45 and give brilliant views of the whole airport needing just a small lens for landing shots on 33, and secondly superb views of the sports ground for when they had rugby matches, this way it could serve both purposes and help to encourage its reasons to be built - helping to raise funds as it would not just fall under the heading of a spotting venture.

It was a complex sponsorship form with loads of tick boxes and questions regarding prices and and media requirements, it seems as if they are more focused on media - Music/Sports events so guess this is why they turned it down, unless they contacted the airport and they put them off?
