Hi Wolfheze, i've just looked at Wikipaedia and it appears that Christian Kunzle came to Birmingham from Switzerland and he was so successful in his business life that he was able to open a hospital for sick children back in his old country.

Oh, that businessmen were as philanthropic today. We can only dream on that one....

I'm a Brummie by birth and well remember Kunzle cakes. It is in the back of my mind that the Kunzles were Austrians and came to live in the city. Did they also have a cafe?, because i remember my mother taking me in on the tram and going to what i remember as Kunzles for tea and cakes.

Walsall? Well in my family it was know as the bow-legged city by virtue of its historic link with the tanning industry. Supposedly the tanners would sit astride a barrel to work the leather. Hence, a lot of men who walked bow-legged.

Walsall was the 'leather capital' of the world, hence the nickname for the football team - 'The Saddlers'.
Unfortunately, it also has a dark past. In previous centuries, a lot of that leather was used in the slave trade.
Walsall (or Wars'll, if yowm local) has never obtained 'city' status. I do remember a saying from when I was younger, which was applied to bow legged people - 'couldn't stop a pig in an entry'. Whether this was a general term or, as Richard has said, due to the higher incidence of the condition in the Walsall area, I have no idea.

Regards

Kevin

Most likely would have invited foreign investment and floated it on the stock market

Not at all, I'd recommend all BHX forumers to join (y)

For those interested go to Google Groups and look for 'BHX News'.

Did anyone go and vote yesterday?
We didn't even get any information on who was standing for election, what their policies are,or anything about the candidates themselves.
Pretty poor really,I think only the Green party actually had anyone going round door to door talking to people.
Then they wonder why the turnout is so low.Frankly I think most people are fed up with all politicians, there are not many who you can really say are trustworthy!!!

Where I live we had two votes. One for a Police commissioner and the other for the local council.

I had a flyer from all concerned regarding the council elections all criticising each over but not actually saying what they would do to rectify any of the problems.

I didn't have a clue with the Police commissioner vote because I've heard nothing about any of them.

Bristol voted in respect of the the entire city council (the first time for many years as usually it's only a third up for election every year with the fourth year fallow), a police and crime commissioner for Avon & Somerset Constabulary and a city mayor for Bristol (only the second mayoral vote as Bristol didn't have an elected mayor until November 2012).

Many people confuse the elected mayor (the 'prime minister' for the city) with the lord mayor (the 'head of state' for the city) and also the police and crime commissioner's role with that of the chief constable.

We had masses of literature from all the main parties with candidates for the mayoral, city council and PCC elections. The local tv and radio stations, plus the local paper, went to town with the mayoral elections with it seemed endless debates involving all 13 candidates.

We are still waiting for the results for everything.

No time to vote. Got offered some work for 2 to 3 days a week which suits me fine. Shame it had to coincide with the weather turning nice though!

I can't believe how many aircraft, including the A380, flew over my house (which isn't even under the approach path) between 1200 and 1300. It made BHX look like Heathrow.

Unfortunately I haven't seen a single one since lunchtime...

Just heard Hotel California which has got the old heads cells thinking as I wallow away a few mins sipping me beer in the garden: songs about places that you should be able to fly to direct from BHX but as yet you can't.

Starter for 10: San Francisco (Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair)

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!
If anyone would like to share their local airport news right here in our news area let me know so I can give you the correct permissions to do so. It only takes a couple of minutes to upload a news story with an accompanying image. survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
