Nice to see after the recent result and all the doom and gloom of the past few days/hysteria that easyJet (share price went down etc) that they have announced two new routes. However i do think that following the referendum we would of seen the post that i just posted based on the result and if it was a stay in would of looked good on the company and demonstrated "confidence" in the company.

Think Egypt situation helps the canaries (sadly). Wonder how long they've been planning this?

April 2016

Now that the CAA stats are out at last, I've had a look at the two new easyJet routes that began in March (Venice MP and Nantes) and the two that began last winter (Basel and Vienna).

Venice MP (4 x weekly) carried 4697 passengers, average load 138.1, load factor 88.5% on the 156-seat A 319. Interestingly Ryanair's version of Venice at Treviso was increased to 3 x weekly for this summer and saw a 50% increase in passenger traffic with 4127 passengers, average load 158.7, load factor 84% on the 189-seat B738.

Nantes (2 x weekly) fared nowhere near as well. 1274 passengers gave an average load of 79.6, load factor 51% on the A 319. If loads don't improve during the summer this one might not last beyond this year.

Basel (4 x weekly) carried 4340 passengers, average load 127.6. The flights were mainly on the A319 but an A320 may have been used on a few rotations. Based on a 319, the load factor would have been 81.8%.

Vienna (2 x weekly) carried 2538 passengers, average load 141. Again it was mainly a 319 service but the odd 320 may have been used. Based on the 319 the load factors would have been 90.4%.

I add the caveat that these numbers are based on all scheduled flights operating. Given easyJet's record at times this summer there may have been some cancellations in which case obviously average loads/load factors would be higher.

Fascinating video. I once flew this route with easyJet and found Inverness to be a super little airport with helpful staff and great passenger communication. That was a few years ago - I hope they are still like that.

BRS-INV with easyJet has been operating for around ten years, daily in summer and down to 4 x weekly in winter. Loads are always high so I was surprised at the comment, 'a surprisingly very busy flight', on the video.

I think people forget that the highlands is a nice and popular holiday destination as the highlands is a very beautiful place. I've always wondered if an INV flight would work from CWL especially as a ski route in the winter.

There aren't a lot of UK airports outside Scotland linked to Inverness.

Looking at the CAA stats for 2015 these are the annual total passenger numbers for those airports that do serve Inverness:

Gatwick 208,000
Luton 95,000
Manchester 84,000
Bristol 82,000
Birmingham 41,000
Belfast City 29,000

Heathrow was reinstated in May this year.

Looking at these, apart from Belfast City (and like all the Ireland-UK services the fact that a large body of water intrudes often makes services viable that would not otherwise be) the smallest airport is BRS which is the ninth busiest in the UK with over 7 million passenger per year, suggesting that Inverness may not work from smaller airports.

A daily probably wouldn't work but maybe twice a week like Cork? But like you said maybe Cardiff is would be just too small. I'm surprised it doesn't have a LCY route.

easyJet at BRS has been busy carrying local football teams to their pre-season training camps on their scheduled flights. Plymouth Argyle went to Amsterdam on Sunday and Bristol City and Bristol Rovers went to Spain on different dates during the past week or so.

New style website and Fast Track security

I was browsing the easyJet website this evening and noticed that it has been updated in the past couple of days.

Out of curiosity I explored some of the pages and noted that the easyJet Plus Card and easyJet Flexi fares both include fast track security amongst the benefits. Not all easyJet airports feature the fast track security benefits and I was very surprised to discover that BRS seems to be the only UK airport that is amongst the exceptions.

Even airports such as Inverness, Aberdeen and Southend on the easyJet network offer this benefit. There is certainly a fast track security lane at BRS - I presume the new security area opened in the past few days has not seen its closure - so it is puzzling that one of easyJet's largest bases is the odd one out in the UK with this benefit.

Very sad indeed and condolences to all concerned.

This kind of event is actually quite common at airports. Even smaller airports like BRS will have a fair number deaths on board aircraft and in the terminal every year.

There will be a forgotten team of first aiders at the airport who are first at the scene to deal with such occurances issuing CPR. They deserve a huge amount of credit for what they have to put up with in addition to their usual line of work.

May 2016

As the CAA has finally condescended to publish May's airport figures I had a look at a few easyJet routes, mainly those that didn't operate in summer 2015, to get an idea of the numbers travelling.

Vienna (2 x weekly, began at the beginning of last winter)

2513 passengers, average load 139.6. The aircraft was an A319 on Mondays and an A320 on Fridays giving a load factor for the month of 83.8%

Basel
(4 x weekly, began at the beginning of last winter)

4865 passengers, average load 135.1, load factor on all-A319 route was 86.6%

Venice Marco Polo
(4 x weekly, re-instated in March this year after several years' absence)

4798 passengers, average load 133.2, load factor on all-A319 route was 85.4%

(Ryanair increased its version of Venice (Treviso) to 3 x weekly from 2 x weekly and carried 4021 passengers, average load, 154.6, load factor 81.8%. Ryanair is switching its BRS route from Treviso to Venice Marco Polo this September))

Nantes (2 x weekly, new route although operated by bmi regional in summer 2015, but they have now pulled out)

1653 passengers, average load 91.8. The aircraft was an A319 on Mondays and an A320 on Thursdays giving a load factor for the month of 55.1%

Isle of Man
(2 x weekly, commenced summer 2015 and operated through last winter at a reduced frequency)

2111 passengers, average load 117.3, load factor on all-A319 route was 75.2%

IoM was a surprise to many, including me, when easyJet commenced to operate it, especially at 4 x weekly which was the frequency in summer 2015. It was reduced to 2 x weekly last winter and remains thus during this summer. Operating on Fridays and Sundays seems to be working because, although the load factor is below the airline's normal load at BRS, it might be sufficient on this route. I can't imagine easyJet expected full aircraft all the time although today's outbound is shown as sold out. As an aside, when Flybe operated the route the average load was usually in the 30s.

The other routes mentioned above did quite well for May except Nantes which might benefit from a later start, say early June.

With the Isle of Mann routesvhave EZY priced it higher than normal so that despite a relatively short journey (as compared to the Spanish routes) a higher average fare compensates for the lower passenger numbers/loads.

The fares for next weekend are just over and just under £100 outbound and £65 and £40 inbound. Looking further into September though they are on average a few pounds more than, say, most of the BRS-Glasgow flights.

As far as summer is concerned, easyJet seems to have hit upon the correct timetable of Friday and Sunday fights. The total number of passengers for May this year is only 17% down on May last year when the service was 4 x weekly against 2 x weekly now.

I saw an easyJet aircraft at BRS at the weekend bearing a large advert for Europcar emblazoned along a large part of both sides of the fuselage. I can't recall easyJet aircraft carrying adverts before. I believe that Europcar is their car rental partner.

seen a couple yesterday with that advert on the side. I recon makes their color scheme look better. the green advert sure makes a difference as it breaks up the colors.

has the extra summer airframe gone back to Gatwick yet,and if so was it an A319 orA320 that went.

Looking at this week's Mayfly there is still a need for 13 aircraft (eg 13 easyJet departures first thing in the morning).

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
