The figures will be interesting but there was the Rugby World Cup last year so that could potentially distort the figures on some of the routes Dublin comes to mind Belfast as well. It's probably why they didn't release the monthly figure as this years would be below last years. Negative PR!:)
Actually September last year only saw one rugby world cup match that would have boosted CWL figures, Ireland v Canada. Looking at the CAA stats for that month it probably led to around 5-6,000 more passengers.

Overall there were 4,653 more passengers in this September than in September 2015 - just over 150,000 to probably around 155,000 respectively. If the, say, 5-6,000 rugby passengers in September 2015 had been disregarded and this summer's LCY route ignored, we can't really calculate the effect because we don't know how many people used the LCY route.

October will be the month when the consistent monthly gains come to an end because last October saw somewhere in the region of 30,000 rugby followers using the airport to watch games involving both France and Ireland, including one match between these two countries, at the Millennium. After that I'd expect to see relatively modest monthly gains (compared to the last year) through the winter.

Incidentally, BRS also saw a few thousand rugby travellers last October so their October 2016 figures will be affected too.

For some reason i thought it was more! And i forgot about France! Like you said it'll probably be modest gains throughout the winter but will be interesting to see the yearly total for 2016 when it ends.

I'm afraid without load factors these figures don't give much information....

Inverness, Humberside, Manchester for example aren't even scheduled routes..... and showing that the Belfast City route carried 4357 doesn't tell us if there was 1 passenger per flight or whether it was full everyday.

October passenger numbers continue to fly

Wales’ national airport has announced further growth for the month of October. The rolling total number of passengers flying from Cardiff Airport (from November 2015- October 2016) now stands at 1,331,515 (+19%).

This news follows a record breaking month for our Executive Lounge, which has seen its busiest month of bookings since opening in 2003. Over 4,200 passengers including business travellers flying on routes to London City, Dublin, Edinburgh, and Glasgow with Flybe and Amsterdam Schiphol with KLM are enjoying this luxury product which includes a selection Welsh food and drink and free WiFi.

In October it was also announced that low cost Spanish airline Iberia Express will begin operating out of Cardiff Airport from Easter 2017, with twice weekly direct flights to Madrid – bringing a brand new airline and a new routes to Wales’ national airport for next summer.

Flybe released its first wave of flights for summer 2017 in October, with the addition of a brand new route to Romedeparting on Tuesday and Saturdays from March next year. Fares to the Italian capital start from just £24.99 each way at Flybe.com.

Spencer Birns, Commercial Director Cardiff Airport, said: “We’ve experienced another month of strong performance from our airlines in October, with customers enjoying a late summer holiday, autumn city breaks and making use of Flybe’s service to London City.

“In fact, the service to London has proven so popular up to now, that Flybe has taken the decision to extend the route for as long as the demand is there. Now operating seven days a week up to twice a day, getting to London by air is a real time saver and ideal for a business meeting - not to mention cost effective - with flights available from just £34.99 each way.

“We look forward to the winter season with more options available for customers looking for business travel, ski, Christmas breaks or winter sun flying from their local airport.”

The 12-month total is shown as 1,331,515 (+19% on a year ago) whereas the 12-month total at the end of September was shown by CWL as 1,352,045 (+27% on a year ago). So to say there was further growth in October is disingenuous to put it kindly. In fact, based on these figures, the airport saw a drop approaching 14% on October 2015's total of 148,000 - about 20,500 passengers - giving a monthly total in October this year of approximately 127,500.

This is actually a very good effort because October 2015 saw in excess of 30,000 Rugby World Cup-related passengers so, discounting those, the airport saw a rise of at least 10,000 passengers. Nevertheless, the actual numbers were down and for the airport to suggest further growth in the month is yet another example of airport spin.

They all do it - I'm not singling out CWL - but it annoys me intensely. Good/positive news is shouted from the rooftops by airports and airlines but negative events are too often either ignored or spun.

CAA Stats October 2016

These have now been published. They vary slightly from CWL's own figures and show that 129,059 passengers used the airport in the month, down 12.8% on October 2015. Atms were down 7%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,328,543 an increase of 18.7% on a year ago.

2 mppa - when?

With the beginning of a new year it's always tempting to look at what might lie ahead.

It's stating the obvious again but to reach 2 mppa as a first step really does need a 2-aircraft low-cost airline base, or the equivalent with a lo-co or lo-cos operating a network from their other bases.

It could also be done with a combination of, say, Flybe, expanding its CWL presence together with an enhanced charter programme from the two main charter airlines, plus other bits and pieces. The quickest way though would be via that so far elusive low-cost airline base.

I have a feeling that when the airport is in a position to reach 2 mppa that it will find 2.5 mppa and then 3 mppa that much easier to attain. In other words once the ball truly starts to roll it will pick up pace.

When is that likely to happen? I've been following the airport and airline industries as an interested amateur for too many years to even hazard a guess. What I will say though is that nothing surprises me in this industry any more.

Certainly a difficult question to put a time frame on, however I'd like to think with continued growth this will lead to a domino effect in the sense things will just keep on going as you say with your pick up pace paragraph, momentum is the key.

A 2/3 airline base from Vueling would certainly fit the bill, not only for new destinations but to add existing frequency in current routes such as PMI, BCN and the likes of ALC and AGP going daily, then new destinations such as IBZ, LPA, ACE amongst others. Summer wouldn't be a problem, winter could be. Vueling seem to have consolidated the operation here last two summers, it'll be interesting to see if and what the plans are for here.

Also potential for FR to add to both the existing FAO and TFS services, although I'm sure FR would want the core routes and whislst competition can be good, I wouldn't want to see VY pushed out of the door.

I'll end up sounding like a broken record on the charter situation, i just can't see either offering anything over the course of the next few years, TOM would require an additional based frame, which while it would introduce new destinations it seems unlikely, W patterns could be a potential for additional Spanish flights. BRS will remain the main source of new routes I imagine

Of course TCX is summer only these days, with a leased frame from Avion express for the upcoming summer, there isn't any room in the schedules at all for movement currently, again an adding a based aircraft would be needed and again would offering some new destinations not offered and frequency increases on routes such as IBZ which currently is only 1 X weekly, A few additional LH flights to MCO over the year could be doable

Actually at the current moment looks like MLA is to remain unserved for the summer upcoming so rather than gaining from the charter movement, could end up losing which would be a blow

BE seemingly are the best airline to add growth, apparently there's 2 or 3 routes to be added over the next few weeks, It'll be interesting to see if these are new or indeed just returning, If DUS returns it will undo a marketing refresh so to speak and has LCY done enough to have a permanent route or not, if it hasn't it will be interesting to see what takes its place, The timings of the GLA and BHD flights seemingly indicate a CWL based frame.

Certainly progress is being made, The key now is to carry on gaining momentum, after all success will encourage success !

With a little bit of working at it the CAA figures for November can be seen. Unfortunately they don't really make good reading.

November 2016

With a little bit of working at it the CAA figures for November can be seen. Unfortunately they don't really make good reading.

Cardiff Airport published its own stats for November 2016. See below press release:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winter season off to a flying start as November sees another month of growth
Cardiff Airport has announced further passenger growth. The number of passengers who have flown through Wales’ national airport in the last year now stands at over 1.338 million, representing +18% growth over the last twelve months.

The month of November alone saw an increase of +11% compared to the volume of passengers who travelled in November last year.

This news follows a number of recent positive developments at Cardiff Airport:

Flybe’s daily service to London City continues to offer customers a cost-effective and convenient way to get to the capital in the run up to the festive season. With up to two flights a day operating seven days a week, the flight – which takes approximately an hour – is ideal for a weekend shopping trip in the run up to Christmas. Fares are competitively priced from just £34.99 one way.

Flybe ski flights to Chambery and Geneva will begin operating on 17 December. These seasonal routes along with regular flights to Milan and Munich are the perfect option for ski enthusiasts planning to hit the slopes this winter.

Vueling, the Spanish airline, has announced a significant increase in capacity on all of its services from Cardiff for summer 2017, due to increased customer demand and consistent passenger growth at Wales’ national airport.

190,812 seats are now on sale on flights to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma Majorca between April and October – representing an increase of 16% compared to summer 2016. These flights will follow the winter 2016 schedule which is currently offering flights to Alicante and Malaga.

Blue Islands, Flybe’s newest franchise partner, joins as a new airline, having confirmed the addition of a new direct service from Wales’ national airport to Guernsey in the Channel Islands for the summer 2017 season. Flights are bookable now from £39.99 one way at Flybe.com.

Flights to Guernsey will begin on Tuesday 2 May 2017 and will operate three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays throughout next summer until 30th September, on board Blue Islands' 68-seat ATR 72 aircraft.

Debra Barber, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer at Cardiff Airport, said: “Passenger growth in November is testament to the increase in choice and frequency now available at Cardiff Airport.

Looking ahead to December, it will be great to welcome customers who will be making use of the 50+ direct destinations to visit friends and family over Christmas, not to mention the stunning Christmas markets on offer in Berlin and Munich.

“Passengers will also be heading off to Lapland to see Santa Claus or seeking some winter sun, with flights jetting off over winter to Faro with Flybe, Spain and the Canaries with Thomson and Ryanair (Tenerife) plus cruise flights to Barbados with P&O.

“Christmas is one of the best times of the year for visitors to explore everything our stunning country has to offer. There’s lots to enjoy including shopping, markets and the breath-taking scenery. As the national airport of Wales, we proudly to the flag every day of the year and always offer a warm Welsh welcome.”

Haha TLY I've read it and the previous releases. Have you noticed how they've forgotten to actually release the increase in pax numbers. 11% is very slightly higher than it actually is but in real pax it's less than 7k. Only the gullible or one-eyed fanatics believe these Press Releases. Fortunately the CAA when they finally release the actual airport figures put a bit of meat on the bones and like I said earlier they don't make great reading but you will have to make your own mind up when you see them.

I don't know how regularly you read F4A but you may be aware that one of my continual gripes is the airline industry's propensity for spin, either by being selective in the way that some matters are presented or ignoring matters that are inconvenient.

I've mentioned the CWL management before in this regard but I emphasised that they are by no means the only airport that challenges Shane Warne when it comes to spinning. In October 2016 (the first month for over a year when monthly passengers figures were down - because October 2015 had a massive surge thanks to the Rugby World Cup - they did not mention this (each month in the previous year the monthly rise was highlighted in a monthly press release). Instead there was a general comment on how the year as a whole was positive and also something about the lounge seeing its busiest month for many years. But that's the industry and the fourth sentence in your post points this up.

Your figures are pretty well on the ball. CAA stats show that CWL handled 65,020 terminal passengers in November 2015 (which was a 33.1% increase on November 2014). So 11% of 65,020 gives a figure of 7,152. However, you suggest that 11% is slightly high so in that case your 'less than 7K' is obviously in the right area.

Having said all this, there was still some growth in November, albeit modest in terms of numbers but impressive looking percentage-wise. But that's always the case with percentage comparisons - anywhere. Without knowing the respective base figures percentage rises/falls are not as useful as they might appear.

Better +11% than -11%. The airport is growing slowly which is good news! It may be a small number compared to the likes of Birmingham and Manchester but it does mean 7,000 extra passengers travelled through the airport in November and may well travel through the airport again and many may have spent their money at the airport providing an increase in revenue for CWL which it will need to attract investors in the future.

CAA stats for November 2016 have now been published.

They show that 72,011 passengers used the terminal in the month, up 10.8% on November 2015. Atms were up 7.7%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,335,534, up 17.7% on a year ago.

The Anglesey route carried 1054 passengers in November 2016.

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
15 years at the same company was reached the weekend before last. Not sure how they will mark the occasion apart from the compulsory payirse to minimum wage (1st rise for 2 years; i was 15% above it back then!)
