It's important to remember those girders will be mostly covered so the ceiling hight will be lower than it appears in those pictures.

Leeds Bradford Airport added 3 new photos of the Terminal Development on it's facebook wall page this morning.

All those images overlook the terminal front so once passengers have reached the first floor they will walk towards the former food village before turning back in a U shape manor towards the new retail and lounge area.

I wonder if they can't clad over metal flooring to directly and keep the girders exposed. They could then suspend the lighting so it looks a bit industrial - seen it in shops and a few public spaces and it can look good.

Lighting will play a key part - if they get that right even the most cramped spaces can appear more open.

I quite like the design with girders exposed like you say with multiple ceiling panels in-between. It's different and won't seem as claustrophobic as one fully covered ceiling.

Also I'm really liking the illustration LBIA have released on Facebook (05.03.12) of the walkthrough corridor from security to retail/ food

It will be a great improvement and (it sounds sad) but add more of an experience when flying out of LBIA.

The top picture is the view you will get when you come up the new escalator / stairway from security. The brown panels in the far distance are yates' bar was

The travelex you can make out in the top image is shown in more detail on the 2nd image

The bottom image is looking back towards security, so effectively stood where the entrance to Yates / burger king was

Well I must say I like the look of how the roof will end up it's slightly different, and they do say different is good, hopefully most of the work will be finished in May, I'm due to fly out to Barcelona on May 26th and would like to see most of the new development.

Some weeks ago there were suggestions from a reliable source that the flooring in Check in Hall A was not going to be replaced - something that caused considerable consternation on here. From a project perspective I found that hard to believe as you don't spend that sort of money on a building and then 'penny pinch' on something that would totally ruin the appearance. Anyway, I asked yesterday at the JCC meeting and it was confirmed that the flooring WILL be replaced.

The terminal project is on schedule despite a few 'surprises' along the way, and will largely be completed by 14th May. There will be no grand opening as the project is modular, with different parts of the works opening at different times.

There was also a suggestion (also from a reliable source) that the walkway wasn't going ahead due to lack of funds. Well it is going ahead and will be completed by July.

It was confirmed that terminal capacity will be slightly higher than 4m and that this year, terminal passengers will be slightly less than 3m by the end of March.

I don't think it's been mentioned before but the first floor walkway from around where air bridge 8 is down as far as around the escalator is being converted into a three lane channel. I would imagine this will help with boarding aircraft down to around the stands 5 area.

I've been for a look round and it's certainly a big space from end to end. A few things that came to light when being shown round;

- everything planned to be ready for 3rd week in July

- LBA one of last remaining airports of any size where more of the terminal space is landside rather than airside - this project will fundamentally change this

- WH Smith have option to move into ground floor Superdrug unit. Superdrug to be airside only meaning either existing gound floor WH smith OR superdrug will be dismantled. With old escalator being removed as well in this area - this will greatly improve space in the main entrance area and ground floor circulation area

- the catering at the airside western end (the 'Saltaire') will offer take away sandwiches but also a sit down / waiter service option for 'proper' restaurant meals

- single enterence for the two lounges - choice of business or family.

- walkway will be 200m long which should take it to stand 14. Structure is designed to be able to reused from stand 15 to 18 when a more permanent 'pier' with boarding gates is built between stand 9 and 14.

- arrivals walkway to be split into arrivals / departures and holding areas (as mentioned by Aviador earlier)

- terminal capacity will be 4.3m when complete

I said that I would report on my "trip through the airport" over the weekend.
I didn't really notice the alterations to the check in hall until I nearly missed the corridor to Security. There was limited seating in the Departure Lounge but not overcrowded. I'm afraid I couldn't tell much difference as on my return it was straight through Passport Control out via arrivals and to the car park bus. Yet again I was on my way home within 30 minutes of landing including a 5 minute delay to getting a set of stairs to the aircraft. Well, we were 20 mins early!.

Coming back through the terminal last week I was curious as how far we would be expected to walk to reach passport control. With the partially covered walk way being built would we eventually expected to walk from stand 18. From stand 12 is quite a hike up the steps, along the front of the terminal, through passport control, then walking back on yourself sometimes to collect the baggage.
Passengers of all ages and levels of fitness have to be catered for and not all would like to ask for assistance plus many carry quite heavy bags.
In view of that, does anyone know if it would be possible for immigration to be moved towards the big staircase area but on the ground floor and then passengers going straight through into the baggage hall.
I know there are gates in that area and it all seems a bit messy.

The problem is if you move immigration further towards the parking stands, you are going to impact on the gates. The new gates 9 & 10 get blocked up as it is on busy days because of the long immigration queues so moving immigration further would make this problem worse and most likely mean that the immigration queue would extend outside.

Ideally immigration would be on the ground floor but without completely closing the airport and re-designing it, never going to happen. I do have concerns about the length of the walk from stand 12 onwards, we will just have to see when the walkway eventually gets built.

I've not made an update for a while primarily because it's harder to see what's happening due to hoardings around the airport.

From what is viewable, a temporary walkway has been erected between gates 9 and 10 across what was formally the gate 9 and 10 seating area. The temporary walkway feeds a new glassed partitioned wall which is positioned on the arrivals walkway which will now act as a departure walkway to separate arriving and departing passengers.

In the departure lounge work is continuing on making a new glass lift which is to be located next to the escalators . Work is nearing completion on the toilet refurbishment on the first floor. The work incorporates additional male and female toilets.

In the check-in area a new escalator was installed over the last few days which will be used to take passengers from the 'still to be' extended security area to the first floor.

I forgot to mention in my last post that the void where the old escalator and steps were is still to be filled. Apparently there's been a delay in getting the metal girders. Contractors are saying it's going to be filled within the next couple of weeks if all goes to plan.

14th May was the date I was given as the target opening date of the new airside area. As we know, work will continue for another 2 months after that on other parts of the scheme

Mode1 is correct. The hoardings are covering most parts of the development now so it's nigh on impossible to get any up to date pictures. As LS16 has just mentioned, May 14th is pencilled in for opening of the new area on the first floor but once opened work to refurbish the downstairs part of the departure area is set to begin.

Allied Drilling were working on the ramp last night between stands 8 and 11(ish). The apron lighting columns have been removed and temporary ones have been installed. This work will be associated with the new passenger walkway to be constructed in the same area.

All checked in for my flight to Sydney from Manchester via Heathrow. Been waiting for this trip for nearly a year and now tomorrow I'll finally head to Australia and New Zealand!

survived a redundancy scenario where I work for the 3rd time. Now it looks likely I will get to cover work for 2 other teams.. Pretty please for a payrise? That would be a no and so stay on the min wage.
Live in Market Bosworth and take each day as it comes......
Well it looks like I'm off to Australia and New Zealand next year! Booked with BA from Manchester via Heathrow with a stop in Singapore and returning with Air New Zealand and BA via LAX to Heathrow. Will circumnavigate the globe and be my first trans-Pacific flight. First long haul flight with BA as well and of course Air NZ.
