I notice that the regional rugby clubs in Wales are not using flights from CWL for their away games this season. With two Welsh teams playing in France this weekend in the European Champions Cup, and Challenge Cup neither have flown from CWL, and have the Welsh teams been using CWL for their URC games. It must be a new policy to save money, by the relevant authorities.
Budgets are really tight for Welsh rugby are the moment so i'd expect that they would look to use scheduled flights more than direct charters to save money. Both sides this week would potentially probably found it cheaper to fly scheduled to Toulouse.

Hopefully we'll see flights for other fixtures.

The multi day frequency of routes like Dublin and Edinburgh really helped boost the movements. Tbh personally I can't see Dublin going beyond daily nor at the moment Edinburgh being daily in the winter again.

I think there is potential for Dublin and Edinburgh being twice daily. I just don’t think the existing operators will do so. Maybe Aer Lingus Regional will increase frequency to Belfast. They could even do a Dublin route as they do with other cities like Exeter. The demand is there, and I’m sure most people would rather not have to travel over the border for such short flights.

Well unfortunately the existing operators are it especially on Edinburgh and I'm not sure Aer Lingus would want to go against Ryanair on Dublin or think the Dublin Cardiff route worth fighting over.

After remarking last Friday, that the Welsh Regional sides were not flying from CWL for the European Cup games, the Ospreys have chartered a German Airways plane to Montpelier on Saturday, Middleborough are also flying into CWL on Friday for their game against Swansea, on a Loganair charter flight.

PSO routes to be allowed between UK nations?
The Welsh government previously put forward a list of routes they wanted as PSO routes but the UK government rejected them.

I think this is the article which relates to that
I could see this policy actually harming Cardiff's chances of regaining flights sadly.

P&O Cruises have added an extra flight from CWL on 17th January 2025, to Bridgetown, Barbados, at the request of South Wales travel agents who are experiencing a high level of interest from their customers.
Must be for travel agents only then as only ones for Cardiff on their website are for 2026.

Looking at another site and there are dates for P&O for 16/2/24, 24/1/25, 15/2/25, 23/1/2026 and 14/2/26.
For Marella/TUI 7/1/24, 10/3/24, 21/3/24 and 23/3/25.

Just wondering with this if the Maleth Aero situation has given Cardiff a boost here with more people willing to fly locally rather than from Manchester and Gatwick

Just wishing Happy New Year to everyone and also as we're looking at a new year here's my wish list for Cardiff Airport for 2024 (many to happen in 2025)
Palma de Mallorca don't care with who but Ryanair would be nice.
Amsterdam to go 21 weekly E190.
Paris to change to CDG preferably with Air France Hop!
Ryanair to continue to expand
Belfast City to go 10 weekly
Edinburgh to go 10 weekly
Dublin back to daily
Rome, Barcelona, Verona or Malta too return
Main wish though is that Cardiff Airport gets progress on it's recovery and doesn't lose any routes.

Looking back at earlier posts the impact on Cardiff was significant following the demise of Flybe but arguably other airports faired badly too such as Exeter and airports which had significant Flybe bases such as Birmingham and Manchester. The UK definitely lacks a short-haul operator to fly the most popular domestic routes. Granted, Flybe went under for a reason, but the airline must've had a number of routes which were making a profit and would still be viable today. Fingers crossed for Cardiff in its quest for more flights, and fingers crossed for a new scheduled airline to serve some of the primary domestic and short-haul routes.

Edinburgh in particular hasn't recovered from the loss of Flybe. Hopefully from 2024 we'll see Loganair return it to somewhere nearer it's 2019 levels. Unfortunately I generally don't think we'll see Glasgow return as a route and I'm pessimistic we'll ever see Jersey return either.

Some criticism on the forum of the management at CWL, regarding the loss of services at CWL, I think in fairness to the management a lot of the criticism is misplaced, and was due to circumstances beyond the control of anyone at the airport.

If it's not the management's fault it'll be the government's. There's only so much the airport can do to attract airlines and keep them. They can't force airlines to launch routes or operate from the airport. They're very much beholden to commercial, demographic, economic, political and geographic realities outside of the their control.

Hi, I was born and lived in B36 for a long time - Lindale Avenue, just around the corner from Hodge Hill Comp.
I just noticed your postcode on a post.

Do you still live in the area?

49 trips undertaken last year. First done this year which was to North Wales where surprisingly the only slippery surfaces were in Conwy with the castle and it's walls closed due to the ice.
