The deregulation of the country's bus services in the 1980s was meant to remove the monopolies that existed in many areas.

All it's done is replace one monopoly by another, and in many cases the service is worse and more expensive - even taking inflation into account.

Seriously, in those days the buses were there to provide a service for the City, and operated by the City - a situation that was replicated across the country. Leeds City Transport bought most of its buses from Charles Roe - a Leeds company (now Optare), keeping jobs in the City, and it took a lot to put them off the road. Each City had its own identity created by its buses and their colour schemes. Now we just have a Scottish bus company operating in virtually every City, all with the same colours and only interested in profit, so leaving areas without buses and routes coming and going with such frequency that folk don't know what routes run where any more.

Nothing to do with the airport I know, so I will say no more, other than I am sure that LCT or even West Yorkshire would have done better than First for the airport.

More roadworks are expected to effect the A658 near the airport over the next few weeks. Leeds City Council is planning on upgrading the lighting through the airport tunnel.

The work is due to start on Monday and is expected to last for ten weeks.

The work will be carried out using different shifts and restricted to off-peak and overnight periods, to reduce disruption.

Lane closures will take place at the tunnel between 09:30 and 15:30, Monday to Friday, and again from 22:30 to 04:30.

You'll be happy to know that Metro are working towards bringing buses under their control. They plan to set fares, routes, frequencies and vehicle types in the same way TfL do.

Changing a few lightbulbs for energy savers ain't going to save much over the partly working fluorescent lights we have now.I wonder what the cost is for 10 weeks work, I shudder to think.

Hi

Its not as a simple job as some people seem to think on here.

The reasoning for theses works for taking so long is that the tunnels are been totally rewired back to the mains DB, (Distribution board) so to comply with the new N.I.C.E.I.C 17th Edition (BS7671:2008) regulations. All the existing light fittings are been removed and are been replaced with brand new fittings which will have the new energy efficient lamps installed. After all the new works have been completed then Industrial Periodic Inspection, Testing and Reporting will have to be undertaken by the approved contractor.

You'll notice the difference. As instead of the yellow glow you get with the existing ones the new lights will be much brighter with a white glow instead. Just like the new street lighting that is been installed all around Leeds.

A public transport boss and ward councillor is calling on Yeadon people to attend a forum to debate concerns that the area is turning into a giant car park.

Leeds City Councillor Ryk Downes, (Lib Dem, Otley and Yeadon), who is also chairman of passenger transport body Metro, has attacked plans to turn more employment land in Yeadon into car parks around Leeds Bradford Airport.

Although Coun Downes says he supports the airport and the jobs its extension will bring to the area, he claims Yeadon is in danger of being turned into an airport car park.

Yeadon people should have been fully consulted about the impact on the area of creating more parking, claims Coun Downes. He is urging residents to attend a Yeadon Forum meeting in March, which Leeds City Council planning officers have been invited to.

“I am a supporter of the airport,” said Coun Downes, “Particularly because we were promised that it would attract jobs to the area. However, recently we have seen a worrying trend in the opposite direction with a car park planning application for land off Warren House Lane which had been earmarked for employment.

“This was followed over Christmas by a further application to convert an industrial unit in the old Avro factory off Harrogate Road into a car park. It is important that we maintain and expand employment in Yeadon but we cannot do this if employment sites are taken over for airport parking.

“I believe we should have a proper consultation with the local community about the impact of parking on the area and I will therefore be inviting officers of the Planning Department to the next Yeadon Forum so they can discuss this issue with the local community.”

The next Yeadon Forum will take place at Yeadon Town Hall on Tuesday, March 2, starting at 7pm.

A multi-storey carpark is desirable but not cost effective, certainly for the moment at least. Surface parking is likely to increase considerably before the airport even consider building a multi-story car park. I would imagine that we are more likely to see a rail link before we see a multi-storey. In the meantime, what can the airport do to reduce the amount of carparking, a valued source of revenue? By increasing subsidies to provide increased buses will also reduce percentage earnings made per passenger.

Closer to home, I know that my own street is being used by people flying from the airport whilst they go on holiday to avoid paying for airport parking which is charged at a premium these days. I don't know what the official airport line is but I expect the airport will just say either that parking is priced competitively or it is priced high to encourage the use of public transport.

On street parking by airport users throughout Yeadon and in parts of Horsforth and Guiseley is becoming a problem. Maybe a parking permit scheme is the way forward.

Just thought i'll let you know is not the airport company thats wanting these two extra car parks as it stated in last nights Yorkshire Evening Post.

Both planning aplications have been subbmitted which are by private companies which were named in last nights artical. Learmonth Property Investment wants to create 635 indoor car parking spaces inside one of the the units with-in the old avro hanger.(Yeadon Airport Industrial est) Meanwhile Sentinel Car Parkswere the other company that was named. They want to create nearly 1,500 extra spaces on there site just off Warren House lane.

That is just as I thought LBASPotter, thanks for confirming it. Not an airport issue then really, just companies trying to make a buck or two out of the airports presence. Surely expansion of the car parking will lead to more jobs, although admittedly not as many as (say) manufacturing. Putting a load of cars inside the AVRO factory seems a good idea to me, as I don't think the whole of the factory area is used any more.
